Blood loss up to 10-15% of the total blood volume can be substituted by mere crystalloids. A quicker and more stable volume replacement can be accomplished with colloid solutions. Combination of artificial colloids (e.g., dextran 60, dextran 70 or hydroxyethyl starches with high degree of hydroxyethylation) with crystalloids (isotonic balanced solutions) produces a long lasting volume effect. Due to dose limitation recommendations for the artificial colloids, volume substitution may be continued, at a later stage, by albumin.

The frequency of postoperative venous thrombosis and the prophylactic effect of dextran 40 and 70 were studied in 90 otherwise healthy patients undergoing cholecystectomy. The 125-I-fibrinogen test was employed as the diagnostic method. The frequency of thrombosis was very low (1.1%) compared with other investigations on patients undergoing elective general surgery. Thus nothing can be concluded about the prophylactic effect of dextran from this series, but it can be presumed that this type of patient does not need routine prophylaxis against deep venous thrombosis.

In this work we harness liquid-liquid phase separation to organize the internal content of protocell models based on water-in-oil droplets. Our approach is based on the spatial segregation of two polymers, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran, within the aqueous phase to produce biphasic droplets. This study was designed to compare the influence of various plasma substitutes, administered for preoperative hemodilution, on blood rheology. We studied 40 patients, ASA grade I, who underwent elective facial reconstructive surgery and received 4% albumin (n = 10), 3.5% dextran 40 (n = 10), gelatin (n = 10), or hydroxyethyl starch (HES) (n = 10). Both genetic hemochromatosis, which can affect 1 in 500 of some populations, and the form of this disease which occurs as a secondary consequence of the hemoglobinopathy, homozygous beta-thalassemia, with 40 million carriers worldwide, have a common pathology. This report describes the preparation and characterization of synthetic ferritin-like particles produced by precipitation of magnetite from a mixture of ferrous and ferric ions in the presence of dextran. The 3-nm diameter particles, containing magnetite cores surrounded by chemisorbed dextran, had a magnetization of 46.7 emu/g of iron with Mössbauer quadrupole splitting of 2 delta = 0.76 mm/s. The application of these particles as a laboratory reagent for isolation of Legionella from other water bacteria was successfully tested. A 400-fold enrichment for Legionella was obtained.
