Multipup homing: a rapid test for olfactory discrimination in neonatal rats.

The multipup homing procedure (MHP) is a rapid test for olfactory discrimination performance that can be run on an entire 8-pup litter of neonatal rats in 8 min. Performance improved developmentally with age, and females tended to perform better than males. The MHP was examined for its usefulness in detecting early postnatal effects of low-level prenatal exposure to chlorpromazine (CPZ) or d-amphetamine (AMPH). CPZ increased response latencies in both males and females, but AMPH had no significant effects. The MHP appears promising for use in behavioral teratological assessment of neurobehavio

Apperceptive agnosia due to carbon monoxide poisoning. An interpretation based on critical band masking from disseminated lesions.

Apperceptive visual agnosia is normally held to be a specific deficit in 'apperception' - a hypothetical postsensory stage in visual processing. This paper describes the investigation of a patient diagnosed as suffering from a classical apperceptive agnosia resulting from carbon monoxide poisoning. Controlled behavioural testing confirmed the apparent agnosia but revealed that he could be trained to make a number of visual discriminations which had not been apparent from routine clinical examination and that he suffered a number of subtle sensory impairments which likewise had not hitherto bee

Visual, kinaesthetic and cross-modal judgements of length by normal and clumsy children.

The ability of normal and clumsy children to match the length of lines within and between the modalities of vision and kinesthesis was studied. The clumsy children showed perceptual impairments, as indicated by their poor performance on the visual, kinaesthetic and cross-modal judgements of length and also by their low scores on spatial subtests of the WISC. Variations in motor skill correlated with performance on the visual perceptual measures, but not with performance on the kinaesthetic or cross-modal tasks. The idea that clumsiness may be caused by an impairment of visual perception is dis

Two visual systems in the frog.

After unilateral removal of the optic tectum in frogs, the cut optic tract regenerates to the remaining ipsilateral tectum. Although the orienting movementselicited by moving objects (food or threats) are now directed mirror-symmetrically to normal responses, these frogs correctly localize stationary objects as barriers. Apparently, thalamic and tectal visual mechanisms can operate independently.

Psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the internalized homophobia scale.

The current study examined the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Internalized Homophobia Scale (IHS; Herek, Cogan, Gillis, & Glunt, 1997) in gay men living in Turkey. Participants were 132 men in romantic, intimate, or sexual relationships with men, and they identified themselves as homosexual (n=112) or bisexual (n=20). Alpha and split-half reliability coefficients revealed good internal consistency of the scale. Consistent with the original scale, the construct validity revealed a single factor for the scale. Regarding convergent validity, the IHS had significant correlat

Associations Between Multiple Forms of Discrimination and Tobacco Use Among People Living With HIV: The Mediating Role of Avoidance Coping.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLWH) have higher levels of tobacco use compared with the general population, increasing their risk of morbidity and mortality. PLWH also face potential chronic stressors related to the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV and other characteristics (eg, race and sexual orientation). These experiences may be associated with harmful health behaviors, such as tobacco use. The purpose of the current study is to explore the psychosocial context of tobacco use in PLWH, examining avoidance coping as a mediator in the relationship between multiple forms of

Nasal Respiration Entrains Human Limbic Oscillations and Modulates Cognitive Function.

UNLABELLED: The need to breathe links the mammalian olfactory system inextricably to the respiratory rhythms that draw air through the nose. In rodents and other small animals, slow oscillations of local field potential activity are driven at the rate of breathing (∼2-12 Hz) in olfactory bulb and cortex, and faster oscillatory bursts are coupled to specific phases of the respiratory cycle. These dynamic rhythms are thought to regulate cortical excitability and coordinate network interactions, helping to shape olfactory coding, memory, and behavior. However, while respiratory oscillations are a

The influence of sleep deprivation and oscillating motion on sleepiness, motion sickness, and cognitive and motor performance.

Our goal was to determine how sleep deprivation, nauseogenic motion, and a combination of motion and sleep deprivation affect cognitive vigilance, visual-spatial perception, motor learning and retention, and balance. We exposed four groups of subjects to different combinations of normal 8h sleep or 4h sleep for two nights combined with testing under stationary conditions or during 0.28Hz horizontal linear oscillation. On the two days following controlled sleep, all subjects underwent four test sessions per day that included evaluations of fatigue, motion sickness, vigilance, perceptual discrim

Response conflict and frontocingulate dysfunction in unmedicated participants with major depression.

Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) often exhibit impaired executive function, particularly in experimental tasks that involve response conflict and require adaptive behavioral adjustments. Prior research suggests that these deficits might be due to dysfunction within frontocingulate pathways implicated in response conflict monitoring and the recruitment of cognitive control. However, the temporal unfolding of conflict monitoring impairments in MDD remains poorly understood. To address this issue, we recorded 128-channel event-related potentials while 20 unmedicated participants w

Adaptive regulation over adversity: Noradrenergic scaling and psychological resources differentiate attentional performance.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity has been consistently associated with cognitive difficulties; however, marked heterogeneity in outcomes challenges deterministic models of risk. Emerging evidence suggests that current adaptive regulation may better explain cognitive and physiological functioning than adversity exposure alone. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether psychological risk-characterized by perceived stress, resilience, and protective factors-better predicts attentional performance and noradrenergic responsivity than childhood adversity exposure in individuals with high cumulative adversity.

Can fertility service providers justify discrimination against lesbians?

In Britain, for the last 25 years, lesbians have been seeking access to fertility services to achieve pregnancy. The problem for this particular group of clients is that often they are refused access to fertility services because of their sexuality. The reasons for treating lesbians less favourably than heterosexual clients are twofold: (1) donor insemination is defined as a treatment for infertility; and (2) service providers have a legal requirement to take into account the child's need for a father, according to Section 13(5) of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990. The question

Kafkaesque systems: An interpretative phenomenological analysis of lived experiences of stateless migrants within the UK.

Statelessness affects an estimated 4.3 to 10 million people worldwide, denying them access to fundamental rights including education, employment, healthcare, and freedom from arbitrary detention. While stateless individuals are recognised as a marginalised group at elevated risk of human rights violations, discrimination, and trauma, the psychological impact of statelessness remains under-researched. This study aimed to explore how adults with lived experience of statelessness in the UK make sense of its impact on their mental health, and how they access support for any psychological difficult

Relative Preference for In-Person, Telehealth, Digital, and Pharmacologic Mental Health Care After the COVID-19 Pandemic: Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study.

BACKGROUND: Most adults and children in the United States fail to receive timely care for mental health symptoms, with even worse rates of care access for individuals who belong to racial and ethnic minority groups. Digital (ie, app-based) care has proven to be an efficacious and empirically supported treatment option with the potential to address low rates of care and reduce care disparities, yet little is known about the relative preference for such treatment. Furthermore, the rapid adoption of telehealth care during the COVID-19 pandemic may have shifted care preferences. OBJECTIVE: This s

Mental health of healthcare professionals in Czechia during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients faced a high risk of infection, staff shortages, contact with patient deaths and their own risk of infection during the pandemic. These factors greatly affected their mental health. This narrative review summarizes the results of studies published in Czech and English between 2020 and 2024 on the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of healthcare professionals in the Czechia. Of the 20 studies identified, 8 met the inclusion criteria. Studies describe symptoms of depression, stress, burnout, stigmatization, discrimination, and violence. Th

[Gender performativity, medicalization and health in transsexual women in Mexico City].

The World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association consider transsexuality a pathology and suggest sex-gender reassignment for the biopsychic adjustment of trans people. Through the discursive analysis of experience, this study describes the processes of medicalization and gender performativity in relation to the health of a group of trans women from Mexico City. For this purpose, a qualitative study was conducted in which 10 semi-structured interviews were carried out in 2015. As part of medicalization, the pathologization of transsexuality generated psychic suffering; o

Thinking extreme social violence: the model of the literary plague.

The author uses literary plagues as a model for thinking psychoanalytically about the basic anxieties activated among perpetrators of sanctioned massacres. The model of the plague allows abstracting an underlying primitive psychological organization characterized by syncretism and a powerful anxiety of de-differentiation and confusion, leading characteristically to imitative behavior within the in-group as well as to the disavowal of the out-group members similarities to oneself, i.e. the disavowal of the other's humanity. Recognizing the historical and social foundations of discrimination and

The first Belgian hand transplantation--37 month term results.

The first Belgian hand transplant was a 22 year-old man with a traumatic amputation of his dominant hand at the junction of the middle and distal thirds of the forearm. The donor and recipient had three HLA mismatches. The cross-match was negative. The total ischaemic time was slightly over 6 hours. Immunosuppression included antithymocyte globulins at induction and tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil and prednisolone as induction and maintenance therapy. There has been no episode of rejection. The only significant complications, except for transient hyperglycaemia, were psychological. At 37 mon

Gestational exposure to methylmercury retards choice in transition in aging rats.

Developmental exposure to methylmercury has behavioral effects that extend into adulthood and aging. In this study, methylmercury's prolonged effects on the acquisition of choice and sensitivity to changes in reinforcement rates were studied. Pregnant female rats were exposed to drinking water containing 0, 0.5, or 6.4 ppm Hg as methylmercury, resulting in about 40 and 500 microg/kg/day of mercury intake. Maternal exposure began at least 4 weeks before mating, and continued to postnatal day 16. Then all mercury exposure ended. The behavior of 1.7- and 2.3-year-old offspring was maintained unde
