Evaluation of amplicon-based nanopore sequencing for foot-and-mouth disease viruses in clinical and environmental samples.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) causes severe global economic loss, necessitating rapid viral characterization. Nanopore sequencing provides a simple, real-time workflow suitable for on-site outbreak response, addressing the limitations of conventional methods. In this study, we optimized a previously published amplicon-based protocol and used this method to characterize a diverse range of samples (vesicular fluid, epithelium, serum, nasal/oral swabs, and environmental samples) collected during FMD outbreaks in 2025 in the Republic of Korea. Of the 129 samples collected, we successfully recovered

From Periodontal Inflammation to Atrial Fibrillation: Molecular Links Through Thrombospondin-1, Galectin-3, and SGLT2-Related Pathways.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease initiated by dysbiotic subgingival biofilms and characterized by local tissue destruction, epithelial ulceration, immune-cell activation, and extracellular-matrix remodeling. Increasing evidence suggests that periodontal inflammation may extend beyond the oral cavity through recurrent bacteremia, dissemination of microbial products, systemic cytokine activation, endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and thrombo-inflammatory signaling. These mechanisms are also implicated in atrial structural remodeling and atrial fibrillation (AF), but the m

Assessment of Urine Kidney Injury Molecule-1 as an Early Biomarker for Nephropathy in Sickle Cell Anaemia Patients.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell anemia (SCA), a form of sickle cell disorder (SCD), is characterized by chronic hemolytic anemia, recurrent acute and persistent pain episodes, and progressive multiorgan complications. Among these, sickle cell nephropathy (SCN) is a significant and severe complication that may advance to chronic kidney disease (CKD), often beginning asymptomatically in childhood. Despite its clinical relevance, data on the early assessment of renal function in patients with SCA remain limited in Nigeria, hindering timely detection and intervention. This study, therefore, investigates t

Prevalence and associated factors of acne among patients attending dermatovenereology outpatient department at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia, 2023.

Acne is a widespread skin condition with both physical and psychological effects. Despite Acne is the eighth most common disease in the world, affecting roughly 9.4% of people worldwide, understanding the specific factors influencing acne remains a research challenge. University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (UGCSH) serves as a unique context to explore the epidemiology of acne within a distinct demographic. However, the evidence is limited about the magnitude of acne in this population. By addressing the identified gaps, the study contributes not only to improved patient care b

Development of a Highly Effective African Swine Fever Virus Vaccine by Deletion of the I177L Gene Results in Sterile Immunity against the Current Epidemic Eurasia Strain.

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is the etiological agent of a contagious and often lethal disease of domestic pigs that has significant economic consequences for the swine industry. The disease is devastating the swine industry in Central Europe and East Asia, with current outbreaks caused by circulating strains of ASFV derived from the 2007 Georgia isolate (ASFV-G), a genotype II ASFV. In the absence of any available vaccines, African swine fever (ASF) outbreak containment relies on the control and culling of infected animals. Limited cross-protection studies suggest that in order to ensure

Risk factors, comorbidities, quality of life, and complications after surgery in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus: review of the INPH-CRasH study.

OBJECTIVE: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) is a dementia treatable by insertion of a shunt that drains CSF. The cause of the disease is unknown, but a vascular pathway has been suggested. The INPH-CRasH (Comorbidities and Risk Factors Associated with Hydrocephalus) study was a modern epidemiological case-control study designed to prospectively assess parameters regarding comorbidities and vascular risk factors (VRFs) for INPH, quality of life (QOL), and adverse events in patients with shunted INPH. The objective of this review was to summarize the findings of the INPH-CRasH stu

Performance of glomerular filtration rate estimation equations in Congolese healthy adults: The inopportunity of the ethnic correction.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: In the estimation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR), ethnicity is an important determinant. However, all existing equations have been built solely from Caucasian and Afro-American populations and they are potentially inaccurate for estimating GFR in African populations. We therefore evaluated the performance of different estimated GFR (eGFR) equations in predicting measured GFR (mGFR). METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 93 healthy adults were randomly selected in the general population of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, between June 2015 and April 2016.

Endometrial cancer and oral contraceptives: an individual participant meta-analysis of 27 276 women with endometrial cancer from 36 epidemiological studies.

BACKGROUND: Oral contraceptives are known to reduce the incidence rate of endometrial cancer, but it is uncertain how long this effect lasts after use ceases, or whether it is modified by other factors. METHODS: Individual participant datasets were sought from principal investigators and provided centrally for 27 276 women with endometrial cancer (cases) and 115 743 without endometrial cancer (controls) from 36 epidemiological studies. The relative risks (RRs) of endometrial cancer associated with oral contraceptive use were estimated using logistic regression, stratified by study, age, parit

Parental smoking and childhood leukemia.

Childhood leukemia is the most common cancer among children, representing 31% of all cancer cases occurring in children younger than the age of 15 years in the USA. There are only few known risk factors of childhood leukemia (sex, age, race, exposure to ionizing radiation, and certain congenital diseases, such as Down syndrome and neurofibromatosis), which account for only 10% of the childhood leukemia cases. Several lines of evidence suggest that childhood leukemia may be more due to environmental rather than genetic factors, although genes may play modifying roles. Human and animal studies s

Gender and age at drinking onset affect voluntary alcohol consumption but neither the alcohol deprivation effect nor the response to stress in mice.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies suggest that initiation of alcohol drinking at an early age is associated with an increased risk of developing an alcohol use disorder later in life. Nevertheless, relatively few studies using animal models have investigated the relationship between age of onset of drinking and ethanol drinking patterns in adulthood. Besides age at drinking onset, other factors such as gender could also affect the pattern of development of alcohol consumption. In rodents, many studies have shown that females drink more than males. However, even if it is assumed that hormonal

N-nitroso compounds and human cancer: where do we stand?

Humans are exposed not only to preformed N-nitroso compounds (NOC) but also to a wide range of nitrogen-containing compounds and nitrosating agents which can react in vivo to form NOC, a versatile class of carcinogens. Nitrosating agents and NOC can also be synthesized endogenously in reactions mediated by bacteria and activated macrophages. Thus, endogenous formation of NOC can occur at various sites in the body. A sensitive procedure (the N-nitrosoproline (NPRO) test) has been developed to estimate exposure of humans to exogenous and endogenous NOC. Results of studies in human subjects with

Risk factors for childhood brain tumours: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies from 1976 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Childhood brain tumours (CBTs) are the leading cause of cancer death in children under the age of 20 years globally. Though the aetiology of CBT remains poorly understood, it is thought to be multifactorial. We aimed to synthesize potential risk factors for CBT to inform primary prevention. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological studies indexed in the PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases from the start of those resources through 27 July 2023. We included data from case-control or cohort studies that reported effect estimates for each
