Congenital crico-thyroid dysplasia: a comprehensive description.

INTRODUCTION: We describe a first case of human congenital crico-thyroid dysplasia associated to a right sided aortic arch and an aberrant subclavian artery. CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient presented with a two-weeks history of acute dyspnea, and reported hoarseness since his childhood. An urgent tracheotomy was performed, followed by direct laryngoscopy. Endoscopic examination showed a deviation of the dorsoventral axis of the larynx, with an obstructive submucosal swelling the area of the right false cord and aryepiglottic fold. Computed tomography conducted the following day confirmed the c

Ectopic Pleural Parathyroid Adenoma Causing Recurrent Primary Hyperparathyroidism.

Ectopic parathyroid glands can cause primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) in up to 16% of cases. These can lead to recurrent/persistent PHPT, and multiple cases have been described in the literature. We present a case of a pleural parathyroid adenoma leading to persistent PHPT. The ectopic location of the parathyroid glands is a result of their migration during development and is next to tissues they share a common embryologic origin with. The pleural location of the parathyroid adenoma in our patient was highly unusual, as the pleura have an embryologically distinct origin from the parathyroids

Molecular identity, anatomy, gene expression and function of neural crest vs. placode-derived nociceptors in the lower airways.

The lower airways (larynx to alveoli) are protected by a complex array of neural networks that regulate respiration and airway function. Harmful stimuli trigger defensive responses such as apnea, cough and bronchospasm by activating a subpopulation of sensory afferent nerves (termed nociceptors) which are found throughout the airways. Airway nociceptive fibers are projected from the nodose vagal ganglia, the jugular vagal ganglia and the dorsal root ganglia, which are derived from distinct embryological sources: the former from the epibranchial placodes, the latter two from the neural crest. Anomalous inferior mesenteric artery supplying the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colons.

We have encountered in our anatomical practice the first case and an extremely rare second case in which the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colons were supplied by the inferior mesenteric artery. The causes of colic artery anomalies are generally explained in conjunction with the development of the superior mesenteric artery, which is intimately related to embryonic elongation and midgut rotation. However, this embryological model was inapplicable to both cases. This difficulty motivated us to seek possible relationships with reported anomalous inferior mesenteric arteries in a

[Persistent descending mesocolon: case report].

INTRODUCTION: Positional anomalies of the right half of the colon are quite common whereas positional anomalies of the left half of the colon are much less common because of embryological disorders during the period of the embryological development of that part of the bowel. The process of the fixation of the descending colon to the posterior abdominal wall can be absent. In that case, when the descending colon has a free descending mesocolon, it shows some degree of mobility. CASE OUTLINE: We are presenting an example of one of the anomalies, which is characterized by the persistent descendi

Absence of infrarenal inferior vena cava is not a congenital abnormality.

The absence of inferior vena cava (IVC) is one among infrequent subtypes of IVC abnormalities that are rarely seen in general population. The absence of IVC involves either that of entire IVC or that of infrarenal segment. These two entities are relatively similar but their etiopathogeneses are still controversial. The absence of the entire IVC is thought to be a result of an embryologic disorder, whereas perinatal thrombosis is hypothesised to lead to the development of absent infrarenal IVC, thus the latter is a developmental disorder and the former occurs due to embryologic disorder. We rep

Smaller nasal volumes as stigmata of aberrant neurodevelopment in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Anatomical and functional deficits of the olfactory neural system have been identified in patients with schizophrenia. Since olfactory structures develop in conjunction with both the palate and ventral forebrain, the authors hypothesized that schizophrenia patients might have structural abnormalities of the nasal cavity, which could represent specific markers of embryological dysmorphogenesis underlying schizophrenia. METHOD: A measurement of nasal volume was acquired by acoustic rhinometry for 40 male schizophrenia patients and 24 healthy male comparison subjects. RESULTS: The pa

Neuroradiological findings in adult cranially conjoined twins. Case report.

The authors demonstrate the radiological anatomy and review the accepted embryological theories in a case of total craniopagus. These 24-year-old female cranially conjoined twins were studied with computerized tomography (CT) and CT angiography, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and MR angiography as well as selective arterial digital subtraction (DS) angiography to clarify whether surgical separation was possible. The neuroradiological findings are discussed, taking into consideration both the embryological and surgical literature. The malformation was classified as a total parietooccipitotempo

Dysphagia lusoria: aberrant right subclavian artery with a Kommerell's diverticulum.

A retroesophageal right subclavian artery, the most common congenital aortic arch abnormality, is an unusual cause of dysphagia in adults. The embryologic abnormality of the aortic arch is involution of the fourth vascular arch, along with the right dorsal aorta, leaving the seventh intersegmental artery attached to the descending aorta. This persistent intersegmental artery assumes a retroesophageal position as it proceeds out of the thorax into the arm. Since compression of the esophagus by this right subclavian artery may produce dysphagia, the term "dysphagia lusoria" ("dysphagia by freak

Morphogenetic considerations on congenital malformations of the outflow tract. Part 2: Complete transposition of the great arteries and double outlet right ventricle.

On the basis of our recent embryologic work concerning the separation process of the outflow tract, our study of the morphology of specimens from the Leiden Collection of malformed hearts, and in conjunction with our review of the literature, we have reconsidered the morphogenesis of complete transposition and double outlet right ventricle. In complete transposition, a mirror-image arrangement of the columns of the aorto-pulmonary septum could explain the discordant ventriculo-arterial connexion and might thus play a role in its development. Dedicating a cardinal role to the aorto-pulmonary se

Apparent atypical callosal dysgenesis: analysis of MR findings in six cases and their relationship to holoprosencephaly.

The MR scans of six pediatric patients with apparent atypical callosal dysgenesis (presence of the dorsal corpus callosum in the absence of a rostral corpus callosum) were critically analyzed and correlated with developmental information in order to assess the anatomic, embryologic, and developmental implications of this unusual anomaly. Four patients had semilobar holoprosencephaly; the dorsal interhemispheric commissure in these four infants resembled a true callosal splenium. All patients in this group had severe developmental delay. The other two patients had complete callosal agenesis wit

Mesothelial cysts of the round ligament simulating inguinal hernia. Report of four cases and a review of the literature.

Cysts of the mesothelial investment of the round ligament are rare and occur in women in their late third or fourth decades. They are relatively painless, mobile, may be perceived to be reducible, and should be included in the differential diagnosis of groin masses in women. Differentiation of these cysts from a small indirect inguinal hernia, with which they are frequently associated, is difficult and may be made only at the time of operation. They are likely to be less symptomatic than inguinal hernias. Cysts should not change in size with the Valsalva maneuver, although they may become more

Influence of endometriosis on the outcomes of assisted reproductive technology in poor ovarian responders with previous implantation failures.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether endometriosis (EMS) adversely affects the embryological and clinical outcomes of assisted reproductive technology (ART) in poor ovarian responders (PORs) with repeated implantation failure undergoing spindle view-assisted intracytoplasmic sperm injection (SV-ICSI). METHODS: This retrospective study included women aged 35-44 years who underwent ART with SV-ICSI at a single fertility center between January 2023 and December 2024. All participants fulfilled the Bologna criteria for POR and had experienced at least three previous failed embryo transfer cycles. Patie

The two sites of fusion of the neural folds and the two neuropores in the human embryo.

BACKGROUND: Since reports on a pattern of multiple sites of fusion of the neural folds in the mouse appeared, it has been widely assumed that a similar pattern must be valid for the human. In the absence of embryological evidence, claims have been made that such a pattern can be discerned by classifying neural tube defects. METHODS: The neural folds and tube, as well as the neuropores, were reassessed in 98 human embryos of Stages 8-13; 61 were controlled by precise graphic reconstructions. RESULTS: Careful study of an extensive series of staged human embryos shows that two de novo sites of

[Congenital neck masses. Embryonic origin and diagnosis. Report of the CIREOL].

Various congenital cervical anomalies are found in the neck region including defects of the branchial apparatus (branchial, thymic and parathyroid anomalies) and vascular anomalies. They manifest as cystic masses, sinuses, fistulas and as ectopic glands. This multicentric retrospective imaging study done in 5 different radiological centers (4 adult radiological departments and 1 pediatric radiological department) shows the result in understanding the congenital cervical anomalies and include 63 patients. The age of the patients varied between 24 days-81 years with a mean age of 23 years. This

A comprehensive assessment of predictors of fertility outcomes in men with non-obstructive azoospermia undergoing microdissection testicular sperm extraction.

BACKGROUND: Microdissection testicular sperm extraction (microTESE) in men with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) is the procedure that results in the highest number of sperm cells retrieved for in vitro fertilization (IVF). This study presents a novel assessment of predictors of sperm retrieval as well as downstream embryology and pregnancy outcomes in cases of men with NOA undergoing microTESE. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 72 men who underwent microTESE for predictors of fertility outcomes including sperm retrieved at microTESE, embryology progression to embryo transfer (ET), cl…
