Density Functional Theory Study on the Selective Reductive Amination of Aldehydes and Ketones over Their Reductions to Alcohols Using Sodium Triacetoxyborohydride.

Reductive amination is one of the most important methods to synthesize amines, having a wide application in the pharmaceutical, fine chemicals, and materials industries. In general, the reaction begins with dehydration between a carbonyl compound and an amine compound, forming an imine, which is then reduced to an alkylated amine product. Sodium triacetoxyborohydride (STAB) is a popular choice for the reducing agent as it shows selectivity for imines over aldehydes and ketones, which is particularly important in direct reductive amination where the imine and carbonyl compounds are present conc

Thermodynamics and Kinetics in Host Design for Dendrite-Free Zinc Metal Anodes.

Aqueous zinc metal batteries (AZMBs) have emerged as promising candidates for grid-scale energy storage due to their intrinsic safety, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. Nonetheless, the practical application of AZMBs is restricted by the uncontrolled Zn dendrite growth arising from undesirable reaction kinetics, as well as severe parasitic reactions (e.g., hydrogen evolution reaction, corrosion, and passivation) caused by the thermodynamic instability of Zn metal anodes (ZMAs) in aqueous electrolytes. Among various strategies, host design enables the effective mitigation of t

Electrochemical direct air capture by local alkalinity generation at three-dimensional interfaces.

Electrochemical direct air capture (eDAC) is a promising strategy for carbon dioxide (CO2) removal, offering advantages in energy efficiency, modularity, and potential for distributed deployment. However, existing systems are limited by low capture rates, energy-intensive regeneration, and challenges in stability and scalability. Here, we present a robust eDAC platform that addresses these limitations through key architectural innovations. The system generates hydroxides locally at the air-electrode interface to improve absorption kinetics and alkalinity utilization compared to conventional bu

Unraveling the Determining Factor of Titanium Oxynitride and Nitride for Ammonia Synthesis.

Nitride-based support materials have attracted significant attention in heterogeneous catalytic ammonia synthesis. However, the correlation between the formation energy of nitrogen vacancies and the electronic work function remains unclear. In this work, we demonstrate that nitrogen vacancies in TiN and TiO0.28N0.72 support play a crucial role in enhancing the catalytic generation of ammonia. These vacancies act as active sites for N2 activation and hydrogen transfer, effectively mitigating hydrogen poisoning via the Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism. Through a combination of experimental anal

CD8+ T cells in beige adipogenesis and energy homeostasis.

Although accumulation of lymphocytes in the white adipose tissue (WAT) in obesity is linked to insulin resistance, it remains unclear whether lymphocytes also participate in the regulation of energy homeostasis in the WAT. Here, we demonstrate enhanced energy dissipation in Rag1-/- mice, increased catecholaminergic input to subcutaneous WAT, and significant beige adipogenesis. Adoptive transfer experiments demonstrated that CD8+ T cell deficiency accounts for the enhanced beige adipogenesis in Rag1-/- mice. Consistently, we identified that CD8-/- mice also presented with enhanced beige adipoge

Radiation-induced aerobic oxidation via solvent-derived peroxyl radicals.

Oxidation is a fundamental transformation in synthesis. Developing facile and effective aerobic oxidation processes under ambient conditions is always in high demand. Benefiting from its high energy and good penetrability, ionizing radiation can readily produce various reactive species to trigger chemical reactions, offering another option for synthesis. Here, we report an ionizing radiation-induced aerobic oxidation strategy to synthesize oxygen-containing compounds. We discovered that molecular oxygen (O2) could be activated by reactive particles generated from solvent radiolysis to produce

Sorption studies of sulfadimethoxine and tetracycline molecules on β-antimonene nanotube - A first-principles insight.

We ascertained the structural firmness of β-antimonene nanotube and studied the adsorption behaviour of sulfadimethoxine (SM) and tetracycline (TC) molecules on the base substrate using density functional theory (DFT) with B86LYP-D3 level of theory. Significantly, β-antimonene nanotube displays a semiconducting character with an energy band-gap of 0.263 eV. The three dissimilar preferential adsorption sites namely, bride-, hollow-, tube-inner site of SM and TC molecules on β-antimonene nanotube were investigated using average band gap changes, Bader charge transfer along with adsorption energy

DNA-triggered dye transfer on a quantum dot.

Nucleic acid-templated reactions are frequently explored tools in nucleic acid diagnosis. To enable a separation-free DNA detection, the reactive probe molecules require conjugation with reporter groups that provide measurable changes of an observable parameter upon reaction. A widely used, generic read-out method is based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between two appended dyes. Yet, spectral cross-talk usually limits the achievable enhancements of the FRET signal in DNA-directed chemistries. We describe a DNA-triggered transfer reaction which provides for strong increases o…

[Energy supply for transport of plasmid R 100-1 during conjugation of Escherichia coli cells].

It was shown that the transfer of plasmid R 100-1 during conjugation of donor and recipient cells of E. coli is suppressed under treatment of the cells by oxidative phosphorylation uncouplers. Studies on recipient cells devoid of their H+-ATPase activity due to mutation showed that the transfer of the plasmid into the cells is repressed after a switch-off of the respiratory chain, the only generator of proton motive force in the mutated cells. In the absence of arsenate the plasmid transfer from the donor into the recipient cells possessing intact H+-ATPase occurs independently of inhibition o

Air Ambient-Operated pNIPAM-Based Flexible Actuators Stimulated by Human Body Temperature and Sunlight.

Harnessing a natural power source such as the human body temperature or sunlight should realize ultimate low-power devices. In particular, macroscale and flexible actuators that do not require an artificial power source have tremendous potential. Here we propose and demonstrate electrically powerless polymer-based actuators operated at ambient conditions using a packaging technique in which the stimulating power source is produced by heat from the human body or sunlight. The actuating angle, force, and reliability are discussed as functions of temperature and exposure to sunlight. Furthermore,

An electro-optical and electron injection study of benzothiazole-based squaraine dyes as efficient dye-sensitized solar cell materials: a first principles study.

Squaraine dyes have attracted significant attention in many areas of daily life from biomedical imaging to semiconducting materials. Moreover, these dyes are used as photoactive materials in the field of solar cells. In the present study, we investigated the structural, electronic, photophysical, and charge transport properties of six benzothiazole-based squaraine dyes (Cis-SQ1-Cis-SQ3 and Trans-SQ1-Trans-SQ3). The effect of electron donating (-OCH3) and electron withdrawing (-COOH) groups was investigated intensively. Ground state geometry and frequency calculations were performed by applying

High energetic polymeric nitrogen sheet confined in a graphene matrix.

Polymeric nitrogen, as a potential high-energy-density material (HEDM), has many applications, such as in energy storage systems, explosives and propellants. Nowadays it is very urgent to find a suitable method to stabilize polymeric nitrogen at ambient conditions. Herein, we present a new hybrid structure where polymeric nitrogen sheets are sandwiched between graphene sheets in the form of a three-dimensional crystal. According to ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations and phonon spectrum calculations, it is demonstrated that polymeric nitrogen sheets are stable at ambient pressure

Regulation of 3-ketosteroid-1-en-dehydrogenase activity of Arthrobacter globiformis cells by a respiratory chain.

It has been shown that 3-ketosteroid-1-en-dehydrogenase localized in a cytoplasmic membrane donates reducing equivalents to a respiratory chain directly which passes them over to oxygen. Microbial hydrocortisone oxidation is coupled with energy generation in the form of the H+ transmembrane potential. Electron transfer via a respiratory chain is the limiting stage in the process of hydrocortisone 1-en-dehydrogenation.

Adapted DFTB3 Repulsive Potentials Reach DFT Accuracy for Hydride Transfer Reactions in Enzymes.

Enzymatic hydride transfer reactions play a crucial role in numerous metabolic pathways, yet their accurate computational modeling remains challenging due to the trade-off between accuracy and computational efficiency. Ideally, molecular dynamics simulations should sample all enzyme configurations along the reaction path using post-Hartree-Fock or DFT QM/MM electrostatic embedding methods, but these are computationally expensive. Here, we introduce a simple approach to improve the third-order density functional tight binding (DFTB3) semi-empirical method to model hydride transfer reactions in

Diet-specific trophic transfer of mercury in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus): Biodynamic perspective.

This study tested the hypothesis that different diets could modulate mercury (Hg) trophic transfer by concurrently altering the transfer of energy (in terms of growth) and transfer of Hg (in terms of biodynamic process). Firstly, we conducted a 40-d laboratory bioaccumulation experiment, in which tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was exposed to inorganic mercury (Hg[II]) and methylmercury (MeHg) via feeding on three distinct diets (macrophyte, freshwater shrimp, and commercial pellets) at a fixed ingestion rate of 0.065 g g-1 d-1. During the dietary exposure period, tilapia exhibited Hg species-

Magnetoelectric Torque in Polar Magnetic Bilayers.

Energy-efficient fast switching of spin orientations or textures is a core issue of spintronics, which is highly demanded but remains challenging. Different from the mainstream routes based on spin-transfer torque or spin-orbit torque, here we propose another mechanism coined as magnetoelectric torque to switch the magnetization in polar magnetic bilayers via pure electric field. In some magnetic van der Waals bilayers, when the electrostatic energy of polarization can compensate the interlayer magnetic coupling, a magnetoelectric torque is generated to fastly flip spins within a few picosecon

Fracture Properties of High-Elasticity Asphalt Concrete Reinforced with Rubber Particles and Polyester Fibers.

Semi-circular bending tests were conducted on high-elasticity asphalt concrete under different aging conditions to investigate the effects of rubber particles and polyester fiber contents on its fracture properties. Results showed that the incorporation of approximately 3% rubber particles increased the fracture energy by 15%, whereas the addition of 1.2% polyester fibers increased the fracture toughness and fracture energy by 4% and 19%, respectively. Aging-induced oxidative hardening enhanced the overall elastic modulus and interfacial constraint effect of the asphalt mixture, thereby improv

Tuning the size of quantum dots to enhance charge transfer and photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Coupling graphene oxide (GO) with functionalized CdS quantum dots (QDs) can form a promising assembly for the photocatalytic reduction of CO2. The functionalizing ligand mercaptoacetic acid (MAA) controls the size of the QDs as well as assists in linking to the surface of GO through the polar groups present on both the QDs and GO. Steady-state photoluminescence (SSPL) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) analyses reveal photoluminescence (PL) quenching of QDs and suggest the photoexcited charge transfer from QDs to GO. Ultrafast femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy corrobor

Comprehensive evaluation of disinfectants on the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes mediated by SXT integrative conjugative elements.

The global spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is primarily driven by horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) via mobile genetic elements. Disinfectants have been reported to accelerate this process, yet most studies focus on plasmid-mediated ARG dissemination, overlooking the role of integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs). Unlike plasmids, ICEs integrate into chromosomes while retaining transfer ability, making them critical for ARG persistence. Here, we established intraspecific and interspecific conjugation models to systematically evaluate the effects
