The role of adipose tissue in liver fat accumulation: a sex-specific analysis in an exploratory cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Visceral (VAT), subcutaneous (SFT), and total body fat (FM) contribute to hepatic steatosis, yet their relative and sex-specific effects across total, regional, and site-specific levels remain unclear. We investigated associations between fat depots, standardized skinfold sites, and liver fat (LF) while adjusting for key metabolic covariates. METHODS: In this secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional study, 48 adults (50% women; 49.6 ± 20.9 y; BMI 25.7 ± 3.7 kg/m²) underwent quantitative MRI to assess VAT and LF and ultrasound-based body mapping to quantify total and regional

Resistance training combined with creatine supplementation: a three-level meta-analysis of multidimensional outcomes from strength enhancement to body composition remodeling.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine (1) the effects of resistance training combined with creatine supplementation on muscle strength (upper- and lower-body strength) and body composition (lean mass, fat mass, body-fat percentage, and body mass), and (2) whether these effects were moderated by participant characteristics (age, gender, and training experience) and intervention protocols (intervention duration, weekly frequency, dosing strategy, daily dose, and supplementation protocol). METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, and EBSCO

Effects of New Zealand Black Currant Extract on Exercising Substrate Utilization and Postexercise Blood Pressure in Men and Women.

New Zealand black currant extract (NZBC) has been shown to increase fat oxidation during exercise and decrease the postexercise blood pressure in men and women. The change in fat oxidation by NZBC has also been shown to be correlated to body composition in men and women. There has never been a comparison of sex responses within the same study. Twenty-two participants (11 men and 11 women, age: 29 ± 8 years, maximal oxygen uptake: 44 ± 9 ml·kg-1·min-1, body fat: 18% ± 6%) had resting blood pressure measured for 2 hr (no exercise). In a double-blind, placebo-controlled (PLA), randomized crossove

Central effects of estradiol in the regulation of food intake, body weight, and adiposity.

In recent years, obesity and its associated health disorders and costs have increased. Accumulation of adipose tissue, or fat, in the intra-abdominal adipose depot is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular problems, type-2 diabetes mellitus, certain cancers, and other disorders like the metabolic syndrome. Males and females differ in terms of how and where their body fat is stored, in their hormonal secretions, and in their neural responses to signals regulating weight and body fat distribution. Men and post-menopausal women accumulate more fat in their intra-abdominal

Isthmin-1 (ISM1), a novel adipokine that reflects abdominal adipose tissue distribution in individuals with obesity.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of obesity-related health risks has traditionally relied on the Body Mass Index and waist circumference, but their limitations have propelled the need for a more comprehensive approach. The differentiation between visceral (VIS) and subcutaneous (SC) fat provides a finer-grained understanding of these risks, yet practical assessment methods are lacking. We hypothesized that combining the SC-VIS fat ratio with non-invasive biomarkers could create a valuable tool for obesity-related risk assessment. METHODS AND RESULTS: A clinical study of 125 individuals with obesity

Ultrasound estimated subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue thicknesses and risk of pre-eclampsia.

Early identification of high-risk pregnancies enables identification of those who would benefit from aspirin prophylaxis and increased surveillance for pre-eclampsia. A high body mass index (BMI) is a well-known predictor for pre-eclampsia. However, if abdominal adipose tissue distribution is associated with pre-eclampsia is limited investigated. Subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) thickness and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) thickness were measured by ultrasound on 3777 women at around 18 gestational weeks. SAT thickness was measured from the skin to linea alba and VAT from linea alba to the ant

Eating-Disordered Behavior in Adolescents: Associations with Body Image, Body Composition and Physical Activity.

Eating disorders (EDs) represent a disparate group of mental health problems that significantly impair physical health or psychosocial functioning. The aim of this study was to present some evidence about the prevalence of eating-disordered behavior (EDB) in adolescents, and explore its associations with body image (BI), body composition (BC) and physical activity (PA) in this age group. Data from 780 adolescents participating in a health behavior in school-aged children (HBSC) study conducted in Slovakia in 2018 were used (mean age 13.5 ± 1.3; 56% boys). Differences in mean values of numerica

An examination of the associations between pediatric loss of control eating, anxiety, and body composition in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Data on the link between anxiety and body composition in youth are mixed. Yet, anxiety and disordered eating are highly correlated. One pathway between anxiety and excess body weight and fat mass may be through loss of control (LOC) eating. We examined whether LOC eating mediated the relationship between anxiety and body composition in youth with and without overweight. METHOD: Non-treatment-seeking youth (8-17 years) participated in studies examining weight and eating behaviors. Anxiety (child- and parent-report of child) and LOC eating were assessed by self-report questionnaires

The effect of high-fat diet on plasma ghrelin and leptin levels in rats.

Ghrelin and leptin regulate appetite and energy homeostasis in humans and rodents. The effects of different nutritional factors on ghrelin and leptin secretion are not well documented in rats. Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate the effect of a high-fat diet on plasma ghrelin and leptin levels and on adiposity. Twenty male Wistar rats, body weight 220-260 g, were used in the study. Rats were randomized either on a standard chow diet (n=10) or on a high-fat diet (a mixture of nuts) for ad libitum 11-week period. Body weight was measured once per week. At the end of the nutritiona

Fat Talk in College Women: A Response Styles Perspective.

This study placed the phenomenon of college women's fat talk within response styles theory. We predicted that with increasing trait body dissatisfaction there would be an increase in rumination leading to a greater frequency of fat talk. We also predicted that neuroticism would moderate this mediation pathway, and that these effects would occur over and above body size. A survey was conducted on a convenience sample of 212 college women with a mean age of 22.04 years (SDage = 2.61). A bootstrap analysis utilizing PROCESS software supported the predicted moderated-mediation model. Thus, those c

Reduction of Fat to Muscle Mass Ratio Is Associated with Improvement of Liver Stiffness in Diabetic Patients with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Body weight reduction leads to improvement of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but the contributions of body composition modification on its improvement have not been clarified yet. We performed a retrospective cohort study in a Japanese university hospital to clarify the effect of body fat reduction on the improvement of hepatic stiffness as well as hepatic steatosis. The skeletal muscle mass index (SMI, kg/m2), fat to muscle mass ratio, and the change in fat to muscle mass ratio after 1 year from baseline were calculated. Controlled attenuation parameter (CAP, dB/m) and liver stiffn

Metabolic correlates of nonalcoholic fatty liver in women and men.

UNLABELLED: Nonalcoholic hepatic steatosis associates with a clustering of metabolic risk factors and steatohepatitis. One risk factor for hepatic steatosis is obesity, but other factors likely play a role. We examined metabolic concomitants of hepatic steatosis in nonobese and obese men and women. Sixty-one obese women and 35 obese men were studied; both those with and without hepatic steatosis were compared against each other and against nonobese controls (17 women and 32 men) without hepatic steatosis. Obesity (defined as >or=25% body fat in men and >or=35% in women), was identified by x-ra

Genetic analysis of abdominal fat distribution in SM/J and A/J mice.

Each abdominal fat depot, such as mesenteric or epididymal, differently contributes to the development of insulin resistance. The aim of this study was to identify the genetic regions that contribute to fat accumulation in epididymal/mesenteric fat and to examine whether or not the genetic regions that affect glucose metabolism and body fat distribution are coincident. We previously mapped a major quantitative trait locus (QTL) (T2dm2sa) for impaired glucose tolerance on chromosome 2 and revealed that SM.A-T2dm2sa congenic mice showed not only glucose tolerance but also fat accumulation.
