Behavioural genetics of early childhood: fears, restlessness, motion sickness and enuresis.

Seventy-nine pairs of same-sex twins were examined at the age of three years at a municipal clinic and their mothers were interviewed to assess the twins' current and past behaviours. The zygosity was determined after the interview by fingerprints and/or bloodtyping in the majority of cases. The following significant differences in concordance between monozygotic and dizygotic twins were found: fear of strangers during observation at the clinic; marked fear of strangers in the first year of life; whether or not the child was startled by sudden noises during infancy; whether or not the child wa…

Diazepam and flurazepam: effects on conditioned fear as measured with the potentiated startle paradigm.

The primary effect of diazepam was to block expression of rather than acquisition of fear as measured by potentiated startle. Flurazepam (2.5, 10, or 20 mg/kg) also reduced potentiated startle selectively but was 6--8 times less potent than diazepam. These and other results suggest that the potentiated startle paradigm, as a measure of c …

Effects of instruction on acquisition and extinction of electrodermal responses to fear-relevant stimuli.

In the present study we examined the hypothesis that electrodermal responses conditioned to fear-relevant stimuli are insensitive to verbal instructions. In the first experiment, different groups of subjects were conditioned to fear-relevant and fear-irrelevant control stimuli in a long interstimulus interval differential paradigm with shock as the unconditioned stimulus. Then half of the subjects were informed that no more shocks would be presented, and a number of extinction trials followed. The instruction completely abolished responding to fear-irrelevant stimuli, while leaving responses t…

The ventral hippocampus and fear conditioning in rats: different anterograde amnesias of fear after infusion of N-methyl-D-aspartate or its noncompetitive antagonist MK-801 into the ventral hippocampus.

Previous studies on hippocampal involvement in classical fear conditioning mainly focused on the dorsal hippocampus and conditioning to a context. However, in line with the strong interconnectivity of the ventral hippocampus with amygdala and nucleus accumbens, more recent studies indicated an even more global role for the ventral hippocampus in fear conditioning. The present study examined the formation of classical fear conditioning to explicit and contextual cues following stimulation or blockade of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the ventral hippocampus. NMDA (0.5 microg/side) or …

Investigating the effect of post-retrieval imagery rescripting on the reinstatement of generalised fear.

Post-retrieval extinction has been proposed to modify fear memories by introducing safety information during the reconsolidation window. Imagery rescripting (ImRS) is a visual imagery-based intervention that alters the valence of emotional memories through UCS revaluation. The integration of ImRS and extinction targets both UCS revaluation and expectancy revaluation, providing a dual mechanism for fear reduction. This study explores the combined effects of imagery rescripting (ImRS) and extinction during the reconsolidation window to attenuate the return of generalised fear. Sixty-one healthy …

Validation of the French fear of missing out (FoMO) scale across the lifespan.

UNLABELLED: Since its development, the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) scale has been widely used to measure addictive behaviour towards information and communication technologies. However, its French adaptation and associated psychometric properties have not been validated. This study aimed at addressing this gap in the literature and proposed a validated measure for French-speaking populations. Specifically, we investigated the factorial structure of the scale in French with a lifespan sample and test its age, sex, education, and time invariance. Data were derived from an online longitudinal stud…

The influence of cost on avoidance recovery after fear extinction with response prevention.

Eliminating avoidance responses is crucial for the treatment of anxiety disorders. However, previous experimental research indicates that conventional therapies, such as exposure with response prevention, may fail to fully eradicate avoidance when it does not entail a cost. This is evident in studies where individuals, after completing an extinction with response prevention (ERP) phase, are given the opportunity to avoid again. This study investigated the impact of introducing a cost for avoidance on the persistence of avoidance responses after an ERP phase. After fear conditioning, participan…

Transformative pathways: shame and fear of compassion as potential mechanisms of change in psychotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: It has been hypothesized that shame and fear of receiving compassion from others are interrelated processes in psychotherapy. However, little is known about how these factors influence each other in a clinical setting. This study examined the relationships between shame, fear of receiving compassion from others, and symptom distress at a within-patient level throughout psychotherapy. METHOD: The transdiagnostic sample consisted of 1,134 inpatients at Modum Bad receiving psychological treatment. Weekly self-reports measured symptom distress, fear of receiving compassion, and shame. …

Dissociation of spatial and contextual memory encoding under fear and pain in mice.

Negative emotional states strongly modulate memory formation, yet the relative contributions of spatial and contextual encoding under fear and pain remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we developed a modular three-chamber Y-maze paradigm that enables independent manipulation of spatial and contextual cues. Using this paradigm, we systematically compared memory encoding induced by foot-shock fear and formalin-evoked pain in mice. Behavioral analyses revealed that foot-shock supported the formation of composite aversive memories integrating both spatial and contextual features, such …

Investigating targeted and untargeted approaches to biomarker discovery in fearful, adult dogs.

Chronic fear and anxiety experienced by domestic dogs pose significant welfare concerns, yet the molecular mechanisms related to these emotional states remain poorly understood. The objective of this study was to explore physiological correlates of fearfulness in dogs using targeted and untargeted metabolomic approaches to identify metabolic markers. One hundred privately owned adult dogs of various breeds (48 females; 52 males, 4.2 ± 2.1 yr, and 25.7 ± 11.6 kg [mean ± SD]) were recruited for this study, spanning a range of owner-reported fearfulness categories/levels. Behavior was assessed us…

Social fear memory as a framework for understanding social defeat stress and psychopathology.

Social defeat is a potent stressor in both rodents and humans that, under conditions of chronic or severe stress, can lead to persistent social avoidance. This review synthesizes evidence supporting the view that social defeat promotes the formation of social fear memory through associative learning mechanisms that parallel classical fear conditioning. Drawing on preclinical models, we describe how the context of social defeat functions as a conditioned stimulus, while the experience of defeat serves as an unconditioned stimulus, giving rise to fear-related behaviors such as freezing and socia…

Predictors of Fear of Childbirth in Nulliparous Women: Childhood Traumas and Attachment Patterns.

This study aimed to investigate the predictors of fear of childbirth (FoC) in nulliparous women by focusing on the effects of childhood trauma and attachment styles. Identifying psychological factors contributing to FoC is important for improving early intervention strategies and maternal well-being. The study included 496 nulliparous women who had never experienced pregnancy or childbirth. Participants completed the Women's Childbirth Fear-Prior to Pregnancy Scale (WCF-PPS), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), and the Experiences in Close Relationships-Relationship Structu…

A neural pattern for fear of neck movement: Development and response to targeted treatment.

Fear of movement is a main driver of disability and a key treatment target in chronic pain, though its neurobiological bases remain poorly understood. Here, we combine functional MRI with machine learning to identify and evaluate a brain pattern of fear of neck movement in a sample of individuals with chronic whiplash-associated disorders. During fMRI, participants were shown photographs of neck positions. The multivariate pattern, which we term the PiFoneM (Picture-Induced Fear of Neck Movement), accurately predicted self-reported fear of neck movement (n = 56; cross-validated prediction-outc…

Letter fluency and level of depression predict fear of falling in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Indicators of motor symptom severity, cognitive functioning, and level of depression have been independently associated with fear of falling in Parkinson's disease (PD); however, it is unclear how these variables combine to predict fear of falling and which specific measures of cognition are most related to fear of falling in PD. The goal of this study was to address these questions. METHOD: Fifty-eight (27 female) individuals diagnosed with PD completed the Falls Efficacy Scale International (FES), Part III of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, Geriatric Depression Scal…

Psychometric evaluation of the monkey pox fear scale in the Turkish general population.

We assessed the psychometric properties of the monkeypox fear scale (MFS) and examined the psychological impact of MPOX on the Turkish population. Data were collected from 635 participants via an online survey between September 2024 and February 2025. To evaluate the constructed validity, we performed exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using diagonally weighted least squares (DWLS) estimation. Internal consistency was verified through Cronbach's alpha coefficients. Furthermore, we employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to determine the predictive role…

Fearing Meningitis: Disease, Emotions and the Spotted Fever Epidemics of 1904-1907.

The meningitis (or spotted fever) outbreaks (c.1904-1907) caused worldwide alarm but remain largely forgotten. This article uses these outbreaks as an invaluable case study for understanding early twentieth-century responses (individual and collective) to a mysterious, potentially deadly infection. More specifically, it focuses on the social production of fear until physicians and medical scientists devised new ways of making meningitis more manageable, with reference to a range of actors who shaped public responses and feelings. Ultimately, the article argues that initial attempts to warn and…

Psychometric properties of the Arabic Fear of Happiness Scale in a sample of Lebanese adults.

BACKGROUND: Despite the prominence of happiness as a psychological ideal, not all individuals experience it as inherently positive. In some cultural and psychological contexts, happiness may be approached with ambivalence or apprehension, reflecting concerns about its potential consequences. The Fear of Happiness Scale (FHS) was developed to assess such beliefs. This study evaluates the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the FHS among Lebanese adults. METHODS: The FHS was translated to Arabic following a conventional forward-backward translation procedure and was administered to…

A disinhibitory microcircuit in the temporal association cortex for fear retrieval to pure tones.

Fear retrieval is fundamental for animals to rapidly enter a self-defense state, which enhances their survival rate. Although the cellular mechanisms and neural circuits underlying fear retrieval have been relatively well studied, particularly in classic fear-related nuclei such as the amygdala, the neural circuits and intrinsic microcircuits of some non-classical fear-related nuclei remain poorly understood. A disinhibitory microcircuit in the temporal association cortex (TeA) was identified in this study, demonstrating a critical role in fear retrieval. Additionally, the response of the TeA …
