This paper reports the results of a survey of inpatients to determine the prevalence of their continence status and the overall management of their incontinence. A survey of 447 hospitalized adults was conducted and an audit of their medical records. Twenty-two per cent of patients reported urinary incontinence, 10% faecal incontinence, 78% nocturia, 23% urinary urgency and 11% trouble passing urine. Pre-existing bladder and bowel problems were reported by 34% and 26% of patients respectively. Sixty per cent of patients were using a continence product or device. There was a lack of documentati

The objective of this study was to determine whether the prevalence of urinary and anal incontinence in women with benign joint hypermobility syndrome (BJHS) was more than in a control group without this condition. The International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF) and the Manchester Health Questionnaire were sent to 30 patients with benign joint hypermobility syndrome and 30 healthy women without this condition and results were compared. It was found out that the prevalence of urinary incontinence in the study group we surveyed was 18/30 and in the control group

OBJECTIVE: To investigate risk factors and prevalence of anal incontinence among women with pelvic floor dysfunctions.
METHODS: We evaluated 881 women with symptoms of urinary incontinence and/or genital prolapse. Each completed a bowel questionnaire and underwent a detailed medical, surgical, obstetric, and gynecologic history, and a pelvic examination. Additional testing, when indicated, included office cystometry or multichannel urodynamic evaluation. Multivariable analysis using logistic regression was used to test the overall significance of all variables significantly associated with an

Dynamic myoplasty combines muscle transfer with electrical stimulation to provide contractile function that augments or replaces impaired or … subject to tissue rejection. The second principal application of dynamic myoplasty is treatment of fecal incontinence through creation of an electrically stimulated skeletal muscle neosphincter (ESMNS). The gracilis muscle of the leg is mobilized, wrapped around the anal canal, and conditioned with electrical stimulation to become more fatigue resistant. To achieve …

Urinary and faecal incontinence are problems that can severely limit the social, emotional and sexual being of the woman. Childbirth is one of the major causes of incontinence in women, especially following long second stages of labour, traumatic deliveries, large babies and in multigravidae. This article highlights the issues surrounding childbirth and incontinence and the implications that they have for nursing care. Nurses, especially community nurses, midwives and practice nurses, need to take a proactive stance to the identification of incontinence in women. Once a problem has been identi

The case of a 59-year-old Japanese woman with post-gastrectomy megaloblastic anaemia having urinary and faecal incontinence and paraesthesia in four extremities is described. While the haematological abnormalities were improved by administration of a total dose of 17 mg of intramuscular mecobalamin, the neurological abnormalities remained unchanged. Five months later, a total dose of 7.5 mg of mecobalamin was injected intravenously over a period of 5 weeks, although the serum level of vitamin B12 was greater than 1180 pmol l-1. Immediately after initiation of the therapy, the urinary and faeca

Intersphincteric resection (ISR) is the ultimate sphincter-preserving procedure for low rectal cancer. A questionnaire about the standardiza … ively low and the survival rate after ISR was good, the rates of local recurrence and postoperative fecal incontinence were relatively high. The radicality of ISR was compared with that of abdominoperineal resection and low anterior resection using the propensity score matching prognosis analysis of patients in the JSCCR nationwide registry. OBJECTIVE: To characterize colorectal symptoms in women with a history of an obstetric vesicovaginal fistula (VVF).
METHODS: Patients under evaluation with a VVF during two 2-week surgical service trips to Evangel Hospital VVF Center in Jos, Nigeria, in 2010 were assessed for symptoms of fecal incontinence (FI) using the Vaizey and Colorectal-Anal Impact (CRAIQ) questionnaires. Women with rectovaginal fistulas were excluded. Each participant's impression of overall health was assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS) from 0 (poor) to 15 (excellent). A study nurse translated questionnaires in…

PURPOSE: With chronic anal fissure, sphincterotomy to relieve sphincter spasm is the recommended therapy. This breaks the vicious circle of inflammation-pain-spasm. This obvious success is weighed against the possible risk of the operation and the risk of subsequent fecal incontinence. The following report describes a therapy for anal fissure involving injection of the external anal sphincter with botulin toxin.
METHODS: We have used this new method in 12 cases (7 females and 5 males; mean age, 37 years). We injected 0.1 ml of diluted toxin on both sides lateral to the fissure.
RESULTS: The …

The intraluminal pressure of the rectum and anal canal were measured in patients with Hirschsprung's disease before and after Ikeda's Z-shaped anastomosis, and the association of the pressure with postoperative capability of fecal continence was assessed. Radical operation did not alter rectal pressure but did decrease anal-canal pressure. Rhythmical anal contractions increased in frequency until a normal level was attained. The rectoanal relaxation reflex became distinct with time, and 45% of patients eventually attained the reflex after operation. In patients who postoperatively attained sat

PURPOSE: The clinical impact of rectal compliance and sensitivity measurement is not clear. The aim of this study was to measure the rectal … ts.
RESULTS: No effect of age or gender was observed in either controls or patients. Patients with fecal incontinence had a higher volume at first sensation and a higher pressure at maximal toleration (P = 0.03), the presence of a sphincter defect or low or normal anal pressures made no difference. Patients with constipation had a larger volume at first sensation a …

AIM: To investigate the ability of critical care nurses to identify pressure injury and incontinence-associated dermatitis and analyse the possible influencing factors.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey.
METHODS: This study was conducted at 24 hospitals across 12 provinces in China. A self-made electronic questionnaire was used. Nurses identified and judged injuries according to the information provided.
RESULTS: The average identification score for pressure injury and incontinence-associated dermatitis was 9.00 ± 3.51 points, and only 2.16% of nurses scored ≥16 points. The average correct ide

Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) is caused by prolonged exposure to urine/liquid stool. It is a common and often painful skin condition in older incontinent adults because of poor prevention. Patients with urinary infections are at risk of developing IAD, and to guide the development of novel prevention strategies, we aimed to develop an animal model of IAD by urine and bacteria. First, contralateral sites on the dorsal skin of Sprague-Dawley rats were compromised by sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), simulating frequent cleansing with soap/water. Filter discs were then placed inside ring-s

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Connective tissue disorders may contribute to pelvic floor disorders (PFDs). Like PFDs, abdominal wall hernias are more common in patients with systemic connective tissue disorders. We conducted this study to explore the possible association between PFDs and hernias in adult women.
METHODS: We obtained the data for this study from a study of PFDs among parous women. At enrollment, stress urinary incontinence (SUI), overactive bladder (OAB), and anal incontinence (AI) were assessed using the Epidemiology of Prolapse and Incontinence Questionnaire (EPIQ) and pelvic

Numerous studies have investigated the influence of health disparities among women with pelvic floor disorders with varied results. Racial/ethnic disparities, in particular, inconsistently indicate differences in prevalence of disease, disease severity, and treatment outcomes. We aim to review the body of literature examining racial/ethnic disparities in pelvic floor disorders, including overactive bladder, stress urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and interstitial cystitis. A better understanding of these disparities may help guide clinicians, researchers, and advocates in providing
