Effect of upright nesting position with swaddling on physiological status, sleep duration, and feeding tolerance in preterm infants in Indonesia: a quasi-experimental study.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of upright nesting compared with swaddling on physiological status, sleep duration, and feeding tolerance in preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit. METHODS: A total of 48 preterm infants, 24 per group, with gestational ages of 31 to 36 weeks, were enrolled. During the study, all infants were fed every 2 hours and did not receive sedation. Those requiring respiratory support or presenting with congenital abnormalities were excluded. At the unit level, participants were assigned to the "upright nesting" or the "swaddling" group. Physiologic

Development of a Droplet-Based RNA Interference Feeding Assay for Neonates of the Citrus Root Weevil Diaprepes abbreviatus.

The citrus root weevil, Diaprepes abbreviatus, is an economically important pest of citrus and ornamental crops whose subterranean larval feeding damages roots and predisposes plants to secondary pathogen infection. Development of efficient RNA interference (RNAi) delivery methods for early larval stages is essential for functional genomics studies and the evaluation of RNAi-based pest management strategies. In this study, we developed a droplet-based feeding assay for oral delivery of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) to neonates of D. abbreviatus using chitin synthase 2 (DaCHS2) as a model RNAi ta

Postnatal realignment of circadian PER2::LUC rhythms in the submandibular gland during oral feeding development.

OBJECTIVES: Circadian rhythms in peripheral organs undergo dynamic reorganization during postnatal development. However, the mechanisms underlying the maturation of circadian clocks in the salivary glands, particularly in relation to feeding behavior, remain poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to characterize the developmental maturation of circadian rhythms in the mouse submandibular gland (SMG). METHODS: PERIOD2::LUCIFERASE bioluminescence rhythms were recorded from cultured suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and SMG tissues isolated from mice at postnatal days 0, 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28, an

Adult picky eating and associations with childhood picky eating, maternal feeding, aversive sensory responsiveness, disgust and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Adult picky eating (PE) can cause distress, malfunction, and malnutrition. The purpose of this study was to examine adult PE, its relationship to childhood PE and to symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), sensory processing disorder, food and general disgust, and maternal child feeding practices. METHODS: Adult participants (N = 772; 636 women) self-reported on measures of adult PE (Adult Picky Eating Questionnaire (APEQ)), obsessive-compulsive symptoms (Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R)), sensory processing difficulties (Sensory Responsiveness Questionnaire

Volume Reduction Effect of Preoperative Embolization of Only the Feeding Arteries from the External Carotid Artery on Vestibular Schwannomas.

BACKGROUND: Although there are many reports on the efficacy of preoperative embolization for meningioma, such as a reduction in intraoperative blood loss, its efficacy for vestibular schwannoma remains unclear. Feeding arteries of vestibular schwannomas include branches from the anterior inferior cerebellar artery and internal carotid artery, in addition to the branches from the external carotid artery (ECA). However, it has been reported that the embolization of feeding arteries from the anterior inferior cerebellar artery and the internal carotid artery has a high risk of complications. Ther

Feeding Issues in Infants Referred for Frenotomy.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of ankyloglossia has increased significantly around the world over the last decade. Frenotomy is indicated in infants with ankyloglossia to improve breastfeeding, although there is little scientific evidence of its efficacy. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether infants being referred for frenotomy had feeding issues prior to the procedure. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was undertaken for all infants under one year of age referred with ankyloglossia to a pediatric otolaryngology practice or a pediatric hospital between 2018 and 2020. Data include

Increasing Exclusive Nursery Care of Late Preterm and Low Birth Weight Infants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Late preterm (LPT) and low birth weight (LBW) infants are populations at increased risk for NICU admission, partly due to feeding-related conditions. This study was aimed to increase the percentage of LPT and LBW infants receiving exclusive nursery care using quality improvement methodologies. METHODS: A multidisciplinary team implemented interventions at a single academic center. Included infants were 35 to 36 weeks gestational age and term infants with birth weights <2500 g admitted from the delivery room to the nursery. Drivers of change included feeding protocol,

Characterization of feeding skills and clinical markers of preterm newborns with gastroschisis in a neonatal therapy unit.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and feeding findings of premature infants with gastroschisis (GTQ) in a neonatal intensive care unit and compare them to preterm infants (NBs) without congenital anomalies. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted with 50 premature NBs (25 with GTQ and 25 without comorbidities - control group). The NBs were compared regarding demographic and clinical data: risk of mortality and speech-language assessment (nonnutritive and nutritive sucking). Subsequently, a multiple logistic regression model was applied to determine the variables associated

Nutritional Management of Intestinal Failure due to Short Bowel Syndrome in Children.

BACKGROUND: The most common cause of intestinal failure (IF) in childhood remains short bowel syndrome (SBS), where bowel mass is significantly reduced due to a congenital atresia or resection and parenteral nutrition (PN) needed. Home PN has improved outcome and quality of life, but the long-term therapeutic goal is to achieve enteral autonomy whilst avoiding long term complications. This paper is aimed at discussing nutritional strategies available to clinicians caring for these patients. METHODS: A literature search was performed from 1992 to 2022 using Pubmed, MEDLINE and Cochrane Databas

Feeding practices in public hospitals' neonatal intensive care units: An exploration into the ways in which COVID-19 affected the best practice in Gauteng.

BACKGROUND: South Africa's healthcare system has a multitude of pre-existing challenges prior to the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, ranging from reduced number of staff, lack of resources and units being at overcapacity both in the adult and paediatric populations. The neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) require a team approach to ensure best practice with vulnerable infants, but little is known about how the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant lockdown restrictions impacted the feeding practices within the NICU. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explo

Cardiovascular intensive care unit variables inform need for feeding tube utilization in infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Feeding strategies in infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) following stage 1 palliation (S1P) include feeding tube utilization (FTU). Timely identification of infants who will fail oral feeding could mitigate morbidity in this vulnerable population. We aimed to develop a novel clinical risk prediction score for FTU. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of infants with HLHS admitted to the Boston Children's Hospital cardiovascular intensive care unit for S1P from 2009 to 2019. Infants discharged with feeding tubes were compared with those on full oral feeds. Variab

Outcomes associated with delayed enteral feeding after cardiac arrest treated with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and targeted temperature management.

INTRODUCTION: While early enteral nutrition is generally preferred in critically ill patients, the optimal timing of feeding among refractory cardiac arrest patients is unknown. We examined the association between timing of enteral nutrition and patient survival and safety outcomes in patients with refractory out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) who were treated with extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR). METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 142 consecutive patients presenting with OHCA due to ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia treated with ECPR an

Successful Identification of Anatomical Markers and Placement of Feeding Tubes in Critically Ill Patients via Camera-Assisted Technology with Real-Time Video Guidance.

BACKGROUND: Enteral feeding via feeding tube (FT) provides essential nutrition support to critically ill patients or those who cannot intake adequate nutrition via the oral route. Unfortunately, 1%-2% of FTs placed blindly at bedside enter the airway undetected (as confirmed by x-ray), where they could result in adverse events. Misplaced FTs can cause complications including pneumothorax, vocal cord injury, bronchopleural fistula, pneumonia, and death. X-ray is typically performed to confirm FT placement before feeding, but may delay nutrition intake, may not universally identify misplacement,

Cognitive Testing of the Brief Breastfeeding and Milk Expression Recall Survey.

BACKGROUND: Major U.S. federal maternal and child health surveys collect an infant feeding history for children under 6 years of age using survey questions that have changed little over decades. Yet, infant feeding and lactation practices have changed with the increasing popularity of milk expression (pumping). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Cognitive interviews were conducted to test the 9-item Brief Breastfeeding and Milk Expression Recall Survey (BaByMERS) with a diverse sample of 15 U.S. mothers of children 1-5 years of age. A 42-item coding scheme was applied to identify interviewer and responden

Standardized slow enteral feeding protocol reduces necrotizing enterocolitis in micropremies.

BACKGROUND: Compared to early enteral feeds, delayed introduction and slow enteral feeding advancement to reduce necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is not well studied in micropremies (<750g birth weight). METHODS: Pre-post case control study. Micropremies who followed a standardized slow enteral feeding (SSEF) protocol (September 2009 to March 2015) were compared with a similar group of historical controls (PreSSEF, January 2003 to July 2009). Enteral feeding withheld for first 10-14 days and advanced at <10 ml/kg/day in the SSEF group. RESULTS: Ninety-two infants in the SSEF group were compar

Effects of Moderate Hyperbilirubinemia on Nutritive Swallowing and Swallowing-Breathing Coordination in Preterm Lambs.

BACKGROUND: Hyperbilirubinemia (HB) occurs in 90% of preterm newborns. HB induces acute neurological disorders (somnolence, abnormal tone, feeding difficulties, auditory dysfunction) and alterations in respiratory control. These findings suggest brainstem neurotoxicity that could also affect swallowing centers. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that HB impairs nutritive swallowing (NS) and swallowing-breathing coordination. METHODS: Two groups of preterm lambs (born 14 days prior to term), namely control (n = 6) and HB (n = 5), were studied. On day 5 of life (D0), moderate HB (150-250 µmol/l

The effects of ADL on recovery of swallowing function in stroke patients after acute phase.

This study aimed to examine the association between the degree of recovery from dysphagia and changes in functional independence measure (FIM) items in stroke patients after acute phase by conducting a historical cohort study, because none explains the effects of activities of daily living (ADL) on recovery of swallowing function. Study patients included hospitalised stroke patients after acute phase in whom dysphagia was confirmed (n = 72). Change in nutritional intake method score was examined for association with age, days from stroke onset to admission, length of hospital stay and change i

Outcomes of early versus late intestinal operations in patients with gastroschisis and intestinal atresia: results from a prospective national database.

BACKGROUND: Gastroschisis may be complicated by intestinal atresia, necrosis, and/or perforation. In the absence of an urgent indication, intestinal procedures are often delayed to allow for bowel recovery. This practice has not been evaluated. METHODS: We queried a prospective Canadian database of all patients with gastroschisis born between 2005 and 2011. Patients with intestinal atresia who underwent an intestinal operation during the first 21 days of life (EARLY GROUP) were compared with those who underwent operations later (LATE GROUP). RESULTS: Of 629 gastroschisis patients, 78 (12.4%)

Iron status of one-year-olds and association with breast milk, cow's milk or formula in late infancy.

PURPOSE: Studies on iron status in infancy and early childhood have shown contradicting results concerning prolonged breast-feeding and cow's milk intake. The aim of the present study was to investigate associations between iron status among one-year-olds and feeding, with focus on the type of milk. METHODS: Randomly selected healthy infants were prospectively investigated until 1 year of age in two cohorts born 1995-1996 (n = 114) and 2005 (n = 140). Information on birth data, feeding and growth until 12 months and iron status at 12 months was collected. Data from the two cohorts were pooled
