Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin involved in the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines and is one of the essential vitamins for human growth and reproduction. Folate deficiency due to low dietary intake, poor absorption of folate, and alterations in folate metabolism due to genetic defects or drug interactions significantly increases the risk of diseases such as neural tube defects, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and cognitive dysfunction. Recent studies have shown that folate deficiency can cause hyperhomocysteinemia, which increases the risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease, and

Previous studies have shown that folate levels were decreased in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and further lowered in T2D patients with cognitive impairment. However, whether folate deficiency could cause T2D and subsequent cognitive dysfunction is still unknown. The present study aimed to explore the effects of chronic folate deficiency (CFD) on glucose and lipid metabolism and cognitive function in mice. Seven-week-old mice were fed with either a CFD or control diet for 25 weeks. Serum folate was significantly reduced, whereas serum total homocysteine was significantly increased in the

BACKGROUND: Folate and cobalamin are essential cofactors for homocysteine (HCY) metabolism. Hyperhomocysteinemia, a multifactorial condition, may reflect B vitamin deficiency and is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, thrombosis, and neurodegenerative and chronic gastrointestinal diseases in humans. Hyperhomocysteinemia has been reported in Greyhounds with suspected chronic enteropathy.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequencies of and the association between hypofolatemia and hyperhomocysteinemia in Greyhounds.
ANIMALS: Data and serum samples from 559 Greyhounds.

BACKGROUND: The role of folate deficiency and associated hyperhomocysteinemia in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome is not fully established. In the current study, we analyzed the role of folate deficiency in pathogenesis of the metabolic syndrome in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR).
METHODS: Metabolic and hemodynamic traits were assessed in SHR/Ola rats fed either folate-deficient or control diet for 4 weeks starting at the age of 3 months.
RESULTS: Compared to SHRs fed a folate-replete diet, SHRs fed a folate-deficient diet showed significantly reduced serum folate (104 ± 5 vs.

UNLABELLED: Folate deficiency increases the risk of chronic diseases, including neural tube defects (NTDs) in infants, megaloblastic anemia, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers in adults. China is the most NTDs prevalent area in the world. Folate deficiency in China can be reduced by proper supply of fresh leafy green vegetables but little is known about the folate content and vitamers in the vegetables commonly consumed by Chinese population. The purposes of this study were first to analyze most commonly consumed important vegetables that contribute to folate intake in the Chinese popula

This review summarizes current knowledge of the effect of folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism and related genetic variants on female fertility and pregnancy viability. Insufficient folate status disrupts DNA methylation and integrity and increases blood homocysteine levels. Elevated levels of follicular fluid homocysteine correlate with oocyte immaturity and poor early embryo quality, while methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene variants are associated with lower ovarian reserves, diminished response to follicular stimulation, and reduced chance of live birth after in vitro fertili

Folic acid supplementation was recommended in the Netherlands after it had been demonstrated that periconceptional use of folic acid protected against foetal neural tube defects; this recommendation led to a slight decrease in prevalence only. According to the Dutch Health Council, fortification of bread should now be considered. Policy-making is complicated by uncertainties regarding potential side effects, such as adverse effects in children, for which scientific evidence is lacking however.

The folate status and dietary folate intake of Taiwanese schoolchildren was investigated by analysis of both serum and red blood cell (RBC) folate levels and dietary folate intake in 1105 boys and 958 girls aged 6-13 years sampled from the Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan Elementary School Children 2001-2002 (NAHSIT Children 2001-2002). Mean serum folate levels were 18.3+/-8.8 nmol/L (8.1+/-3.9 ng/mL) in boys and 20.3+/-9.7 nmol/L (9.0+/-4.3 ng/mL) in girls. Mean RBC folate levels were 700+/-320 nmol/L (308+/-141 ng/mL) in boys and 751+/-347 nmol/L (331+/-153 ng/mL) in girls. The prevalen

Low B-vitamin intake may increase risk of breast cancer through decreased DNA repair capacity. Alcohol intake increases risk for breast cancer, with evidence from prospective studies of an interaction between alcohol and folate. We explored dietary intake of folate and other B vitamins with risk of breast cancer in a cohort study of 34,387 postmenopausal women. To measure diet, we mailed a food frequency questionnaire; we estimated nutrient intakes and categorized them into four levels: <10th, 11th-30th, 31st-50th, and >50th percentiles. Through 12 years of follow-up, we identified 1,586 cases

To examine the graded risks for coronary artery disease (CAD) associated with plasma homocyst(e)ine [H(e)] and to evaluate the extent to which this risk is mediated by altered vitamin status, we measured plasma concentrations of H(e), vitamins B6 and B12, and folate as well as other coronary risk factors in subjects with early familial CAD and in control subjects. We studied 120 male and 42 female patients with early CAD who were unrelated to each other but were from families in which at least one other sibling had early CAD. Control subjects were 85 men and 70 women with the same age range (3

Data on the nutritional situation and prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in Azerbaijan are scarce, and knowledge about anemia risk factors is needed for national and regional policymakers. A nationally representative cross-sectional survey was conducted to assess the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies, over- and undernutrition, and to disentangle determinants of anemia in children and women in Azerbaijan. The survey generated estimates of micronutrient deficiency and growth indicators for children aged 0⁻59 months of age (6⁻59 months for blood biomarkers) and non-pregnant women 15⁻

Chronic alcoholic patients frequently exhibit a mild to moderate cognitive impairment that has been related to Wernicke-Korsakoff encephalopathy and attributed tentatively to nutritional and vitamin deficiencies. To elucidate the possible relation between alcoholic cognitive deterioration (ACD) and nutritional and vitamin deficiencies, several tests of intelligence and memory were administered to 54 chronic alcoholic patients and 30 controls. Serum levels of thiamine, folic acid, vitamins B12, A, and E, and certain nutritional indexes were determined in most of the subjects. The alcoholics sco

B vitamins are the most widely used supplements for women and children to maintain good health conditions. Vitamin B deficiency is prevalent in many countries including India and South Africa. Synthetic vitamins (such as folic acid) are administered orally to vulnerable groups to address the vitamin B deficiency. B vitamin-fortified foods have also been adopted as the mandate of the governments of India and South Africa. However, the policies have not been able to bring any sustainable solutions to vitamin B deficiency. This article describes the natural production of B vitamins by cultured mi

The manuscript is a commenting on the article "Effects of vitamin B12, folate, and entacapone on homocysteine levels in levodopa-treated Parkinson's disease patients: A randomized controlled study", recently published by Anamnart and Kitjarak (2021), in this prestigious journal. The authors demonstrated that combination supplementation with vitamin B12 and folate was associated with significantly decreased plasma homocysteine (Hcy), suggesting that plasma Hcy levels should be monitored during levodopa treatment, and supplementation with inexpensive vitamin B12 and folate is beneficial for levo

Recently, cerebral folate deficiency (CFD) was suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, the exact role of folate metabolism in the pathogenesis of ASD, identification of underlying pathogenic mechanisms and impaired metabolic pathways remain unexplained. The aim of our study was to develop and test a novel, unbiased, bioinformatics approach in order to identify links between ASD and disturbed cerebral metabolism by focusing on abnormal folate metabolism, which could foster patient stratification and novel therapeutic interventions. An unbiased,
