Arthroereisis is an operation to prevent abnormal pronation in the subtalar joint in children and adults with symptomatic flexible flatfeet. In the present report, we describe an uncommon late complication of a former variation of this procedure, namely the case of an adult male who experienced migration of a xenogeneic bone graft that had been implanted 55 years earlier. A thorough review of the existing data was also undertaken to better understand the complications of this procedure.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are one of the most commonly used methods for reversible contraception. This article reports a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder which exhibited a migrated IUD into the bladder. A 66-year-old woman with a 26-year history of IUD use admitted to the clinic with the chief complaint of intermittent macroscopic haematuria. Clinical examination raised a suspicion bladder carcinoma, so cystoscopy and histological sampling were performed and squamous cell carcinoma of bladder was diagnosed, which was related to chronic irritation by a migrated IUD.

We report a 70-year-old man who had a rare complication related to the insertion of Kirschner wires for fixation of a right clavicle fracture. Eight months after the placement of the Kirschner wires, he presented with cough and hemosputum. Chest roentgenograms, chest computed tomographic scans, and bronchoscopy revealed that one of the Kirschner wires had migrated through the lung and into the intrathoracic trachea. Immediate thoracotomy was performed to remove the wire. His postoperative course was uneventful.

BACKGROUND: Insertion of long-term central venous catheters (CVC) plays a vital role in providing continuous venous access for therapy in children. CVC line fractures are most commonly seen after long-term periods of therapy during removal. Usual place of rupture is proximal, at the point of entrance of the catheter into the vein, when the subclavian approach is utilized. We discuss a case that shows that CVC can also fracture in places different than the most common location and is possible not to detect that a fracture has occurred if a substantial portion of catheter is removed.

The expectoration of metal fragments (metalloptysis) is a rare complication after thoracic surgery. It usually occurs in patients with severe emphysema. We present a case of metalloptysis of surgical staples that is unique in several aspects: it occurred longer after surgery than any previously reported case, it occurred after lobar resection surgery, and it most likely developed as a result of chronic necrotizing aspergillosis. Although metalloptysis usually requires no therapy, it may indicate an active infectious process that requires appropriate therapy.

Laparoscopic techniques are now commonly used for the repair of inguinal hernias, since they offer rapid postoperative recovery and low complication rates.
