In June 2005 Coxiella burnetii-infected sheep, grazing and lambing on a meadow bordering a residential area, caused a large Q fever outbreak (331 cases) in Germany. Our outbreak investigation provided attack rates (AR) by distance between residence and meadow, sex and age groups. The AR of people living within 50 m of the meadow was 11.8%. It decreased the further the residence was from the meadow, falling to 1.3% at 350-400 m distance (RR 8.7, 95% CI 4.5-17.1). The AR was higher in men (RR 1.4, 95% CI 1.1-1.8). OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of familial focal and segmental dystonias in a large patient cohort with primary dystonia from north-western Germany.

PURPOSE: Delaying the diagnosis and initiation of treatment of cancer is likely to result in tumor progression and a worse prognosis. We examined sources and consequences of provider delay among female breast cancer patients in a population-based study in Germany.

The inhabitants of a rural community in southwestern Germany were examined for alveolar echinococcosis (AE). The study was prompted by the recent increase of the prevalence of the parasite in foxes and the increase of fox populations: in the study area, 75% of the foxes carried Echinococcus multilocularis. A naturally occurring E. multilocularis infection in an 11-year-old female rhesus monkey is described. The infection most probably was acquired from foxes of the Göttingen area through contaminated branches or foliage taken from the nearby forest. The most severely affected organs were the liver and the lung, A limited serological survey using the Em2plus ELISA revealed 5 more animals which so far remain clinically healthy as possibly infected.

Previous studies from Spain, Italy, and France have demonstrated a high prevalence (71% to 91%) of antibodies against hepatitis C virus in patients with porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT). To determine the role of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in PCT in Germany, we have assessed the prevalence of antibodies against HCV and hepatitis B virus (HBV) in 106 patients (mean age, 60 +/- 14 years) with the disease. Analysis of the outbreaks of food-borne infections and intoxications with a total of 2,610 patients in 1991 demonstrates that these cases were caused in 67.4% by Salmonella species. Eggs were mainly responsible for the outbreaks, whereas poor kitchen hygiene played also a main part in promoting disease.

Little work has been carried out on the epidemiology of the two serious skin reactions--toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS). We collected details of all the hospitalized cases of TEN and SJS in the Federal Republic of Germany for the years 1981 through 1985 inclusive. Inquiries by telephone, letter, and personal visits produced an overall response of 91%; 259 cases of TEN and 315 cases of SJS were identified. Nine Italian and 12 German children fulfilled the criteria of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), according to the French-American-British (FAB) classification. All patients belonged to the more aggressive subtypes of myelodysplastic syndromes. Thyroid volume of 1397 German and 303 Swedish adults were estimated by sonography. Thyroid size of 6-16 year old Germans (n = 619) was determined and compared with findings on palpation. Thyroid volume was more than twice as great in German (21.4 +/- 15.6 ml, mean +/- SD) than in Swedish adults (10.1 +/- 4.9 ml). Rickettsiae of the spotted fever group were detected by haemocyte test in 8 (12%) of 51 partially engorged Dermacentor marginatus females collected in March/April 1975 in South Germany. Four strains of rickettsiae were isolated from ticks positive in haemocyte test. It was concluded with isolated strain BRD-1 and homologous immune guinea pig, hamster and mouse sera in CF cross reactions with antigens and immune sera against other members of the SF group, that the newly isolated strains are similar, almost undistinguishable from Rickettsia slovaca.
