Geographic and ethnic variations in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease frequency suggest that environmental factors affect disease risk. Prevention of parasitic worms (helminths) through improved hygiene may be one factor leading to the increased disease prevalence. Helminths alter host mucosal and systemic immunity. Animals exposed to helminths are protected from experimental colitis and other immunological diseases, and helminthic colonization can be used to treat ongoing murine and human disease. Helminths induce mucosal T cells to make Th2 and regulatory cytokines. Helminth-induced muc

The value of a geographical perspective to infectious disease epidemiology and control has long been recognized. However, the labour required to produce maps, and keep them up to date, has inhibited the development of this area, and very little is currently known about the spatial distribution of parasitic infections other than malaria, trypanosomiasis and onchocerciasis. A recent initiative by an international group of collaborators is attempting to redress the absence of detailed spatial information on the major helminth infections of humans. In this article, Simon Brooker and colleagues des

In conclusion, the causes of chronic diarrhea in the returned traveler are protean. Careful evaluation requires an understanding of where the traveler has been, when they were there, the type of diarrheal illness, medications taken, and knowledge of the patients' other medical problems. Protozoa, particularly G. lamblia, C. parvum, and C. cayatenensis, are among the more commonly identified agents. If the patient is immunocompromised, microsporidia and Isospora become more likely, and a prior history of antimicrobial use raises the possibility of C. difficile colitis. Occasionally helminths, w

The results of preclinical trials of 28 new compounds of haloid-containing sulfamidobenzamides with low toxicity are presented. The trials on a hymenolepiasis model showed that effectiveness of N-(2,5-dichlorophenyl)-2/(3-nitro-4-chlorophenyl) sulfonylamino/-5-bromobenzamide was similar to that of the well-known drug niclosamide. In the trials on an opisthorchiasis model, 2 compounds were shown to be highly effective, and on a trichocephaliasis model 5 compounds showed a high activity.

The present study was carried out on 429 children below 6 years of age from a village in Bani-Suef governorate to show the schistosomiasis prevalence rate among them. Direct sedimentation techniques of the urine and stool beside an indirect serological test (Dot-ELISA) were used for the diagnosis. The results indicate 14.5% and 26.3% positive cases as detected parasitologically and serologically, respectively. Other parasitic infections were also diagnosed. The serologic test enabled us to differentiate acute from chronic schistosomiasis cases in the studied sample. The serologically positive

A helminthological study of stool and urine samples from 1037 people from 4 rural communities in Gumau District of Bauchi State, Nigeria, was carried out using formol-ether concentration and direct centrifugation methods respectively. 39.0% of persons examined were infected. Ova of Ascaris lumbricoides, Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni were the most common. Trichuris trichiura, hookworm, tapeworm and Strongyloides stercoralis were also encountered. 17.9% and 10.8% of examined persons had S. haematobium and S. mansoni infections respectively. A significant relationship was found between w

Gastrointestinal helminths (nematodes, trematodes and cestodes) constitute some of the most common and important infective agents of mankind and are responsible for much morbidity and some mortality. Whereas many symptoms and signs are confined to the intestine and less often the associated digestive organs, systemic manifestations are also numerous; this applies especially to indigenous populations of developing 'Third World' countries. Using a clinical classification these organisms can be broadly separated into those involving the small-intestine and those which have a colo-rectal distribut

The efficacy of albendazole in removing gastrointestinal nematodes and tapeworms was studied in 16 treated and 16 untreated (control) beef calves. The anthelmintic was administered as an oral drench at a dose level of 5 ml/45.5 kg of body weight (5 mg/kg). Percentage of efficacy against the various genera was: Trichostrongylus axei, Oesophagostomum radiatum, and Moniezia-100.0; Haemonchus placei, Cooperia spp, and Trichostrongylus colubriformis - greater than 99.0; Ostertagia ostertagi -98.3; and Bunostomum phlebotomum -96.2. Efficacy against Trichuris was 20.2. Efficacy against immature nemat

The occurrence of internal parasites in Washinton cattle was estimated. During the survey period in 1972 and 1973, more than 3,700 fecal samples from 29 herds and 4 feedlots, and viscera from 55 cattle were examined. The percentage of fecal samples with parasite eggs or oocysts from herds was as follows: oocysts, 77%; "strongyline" eggs, 44%; Nematodirus eggs, 3%; Moniezia eggs, 3%; Fasciola eggs, 2%; Trichuris eggs, 2%; and Dictyocaulus larvae, 1%. The fecal samples from feedlots contained principally strongyline eggs which varied markedly in numbers among groups of cattle in the lots. The pr

A series of new highly chlorinated 1-methyleneallyl ("butadienyl") dialkyl phosphates and related phosphonates and phosphinates has been synthesized and assessed for anthelmintic activity in mice against the tapeworm Hymenolepis nana and the pinworm Syphacia obvelata. Highest activity was observed with diethyl 2,3,3-trichloro-1-dichloromethyleneallyl ("perchlorobutadienyl") phosphate (14), while replacement of both ethoxy groups by methoxy and larger alkoxy or phenyl groups gave less efficacious compounds. In general, chlorine depletion of the 1,3-butadien-2-yl moiety or saturation of one doub
