[Control campaigns against Triatoma infestans in a rural community of northwestern Argentina].

Control campaigns against Triatoma infestans, the principal vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, have relied on the application of residual insecticides and have regarded the system as homogeneous. Reinfestation generally starts in peri-domestic residual foci or in preexisting foci that escaped spraying for diverse reasons. From these foci T. infestans adults actively invade other sites, or they are transported passively within objects or goods from infested communities. In the absence of additional spraying of insecticides after the attack phase, domiciliary reinfestation expanded exponentially to re

Entomological evaluation of community-wide use of lambdacyhalothrin-impregnated bed nets against malaria in a border area of north-west Thailand.

This paper reports 2 studies. (i) After a year of baseline data collection, lambdacyhalothrin-treated bed nets were introduced into 3 of 5 villages in north-west Thailand, the remaining 2 being treated with placebo. Human bait collections were carried out in each village on 2 nights per month, for 8 months of each year, and the biting densities were compared between the first year and the second year. The treated bed nets did not have any significant impact on the density or parous rates of Anopheles sawadwongporni and A. maculatus s.s. populations. The results for A. dirus s.l. were not concl

Horn fly (Diptera: Muscidae) control and weight gains of yearling beef cattle.

Horn fly, Haematobia irritans (L.), populations were controlled on yearling cattle (n = 246) during the grazing season at moderate levels (68% control) with the use of organophosphate- and pyrethroid-impregnated ear tags. Weight gains of treated cattle during the 3-yr period were 17% greater than for untreated cattle. Results from this study demonstrated that yearling cattle of 25 or 50% Brahman, Bos indicus, breeding responded with improved animal performance in Louisiana when moderate horn fly control was achieved.

[Variations in blood cholinesterase activity and exposure to chlorpyrifos in termite-control workers].

Chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate insecticide, has often been used as a termite-control agent since the advent of regulatory measures against the use of chlordanes in September 1986. A current concern is hazards such as organophosphorus poisoning among termite-control workers. In this study, the blood cholinesterase activity, the number of hours engaged in termite-control work, general conditions, and various test values were examined regularly in eight workers at a termite-control office. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The plasma cholinesterase level was within the normal range from

The control of malaria vectors in the context of the Health for All by the Year 2000 Global Strategy.

The changing picture of malaria worldwide needs to be viewed in the context of other developments before we can determine the directions to take to be able to provide the thrusts required in malaria vector control. As a result of population growth, increasing urbanization and continuing pressure on scarce natural resources, the epidemiology of malaria and its manifestation as a public health problem are undergoing profound modifications, indeed in several parts of the world. This picture is further complicated by the spread of resistance to pesticides in the vector and to drugs in Plasmodium f

Control of warble fly in Great Britain and the European Community.

The costs of warble fly in cattle have been estimated at 35 million pounds for Great Britain in 1985 and $85 million for Italy in 1982. Control measures within the European Community vary from one country to another and from the voluntary application of systemic products by individual farmers to comprehensive national eradication schemes backed by legislation. Of the countries opting for national eradication measures, Denmark has been successful and the Federal Republic of Germany, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain have reduced the incidence of the di

Studies on bancroftian filariasis in Liberia, West Africa. V. The influence of treatment with diethylcarbamazine and vector control on the transmission of Wuchereria bancrofti.

The transmission intensity of bancroftian filariasis was investigated during a study on filariasis control carried out in eight villages of the savanna area in the hinterland of Liberia. Although the microfilarial reservoir had been reduced considerably in the human population of two villages by mass treatment with the filaricide drug diethylcarbamazine the transmission of Wuchereria bancrofti was continued without any distinct reduction. The transmission however decreased distinctly or was even interrupted when residual spraying with DDT was used in two other villages for vector control. The

Enhanced Delivery of Nucleic Acids to Insect Cells by Star Polycation Formulation.

Gene delivery to target cells is required for bioengineering or medical/agricultural applications. However, the hydrophobicity of the cell membrane always makes it resistant to polar nucleic acids. This physicochemical barrier is usually overcome by a nano-formulation to hide the polarity. This study evaluated a specific formulation called star polycation (SPc) regarding its efficacy in DNA/RNA delivery to insect cells. The delivery efficiency of the SPc formulation was assessed by transient expression of green fluorescence protein (GFP) in Sf9 cells, in which SPc formulation significantly enh

Residual survival and local dispersal drive reinfestation by Triatoma dimidiata following insecticide application in Guatemala.

Chagas disease is caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by triatomine insect vectors. In Guatemala, insecticide spraying is an integral part of management of the main vector, Triatoma dimidiata. Spraying typically has low efficacy, which may be due to incomplete elimination from infested houses, within-village dispersal, or influx from other villages or sylvan environments. To evaluate how these mechanisms contribute to reinfestation, we conducted a time-course analysis of T. dimidiata infestation, abundance and household genetic structure in two nearby villages in

Diversifying selection and host adaptation in two endosymbiont genomes.

BACKGROUND: The endosymbiont Wolbachia pipientis infects a broad range of arthropod and filarial nematode hosts. These diverse associations form an attractive model for understanding host:symbiont coevolution. Wolbachia's ubiquity and ability to dramatically alter host reproductive biology also form the foundation of research strategies aimed at controlling insect pests and vector-borne disease. The Wolbachia strains that infect nematodes are phylogenetically distinct, strictly vertically transmitted, and required by their hosts for growth and reproduction. Insects in contrast form more fluid

Mission Accomplished? We Need a Guide to the 'Post Release' World of Wolbachia for Aedes-borne Disease Control.

Historically, sustained control of Aedes aegypti, the vector of dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika viruses, has been largely ineffective. Subsequently, two novel 'rear and release' control strategies utilizing mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia are currently being developed and deployed widely. In the incompatible insect technique, male Aedes mosquitoes, infected with Wolbachia, suppress populations through unproductive mating. In the transinfection strategy, both male and female Wolbachia-infected Ae. aegypti mosquitoes rapidly infect the wild population with Wolbachia, blocking viru

Phytoene desaturase-silenced citrus as a trap crop with multiple cues to attract Diaphorina citri, the vector of Huanglongbing.

Huanglongbing (HLB) is one of the most destructive diseases in citrus worldwide. Unfortunately, HLB has no cure and management relies on insecticides to reduce populations of the vector, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae). We propose an attract-and-kill strategy using a trap crop as an alternative to vector control to reduce transmission of the pathogen, 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus'. We evaluated vector response to phytoene desaturase-silenced citrus trees using virus-induced gene silencing technology. Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) was used to produce a phytoene desaturase-si

Reduced caterpillar damage can benefit plant bugs in Bt cotton.

Bt cotton was genetically modified to produce insecticidal proteins targeting Lepidopteran pests and is therefore only minimally affected by caterpillar damage. This could lead to reduced levels of inherent, systemically inducible defensive compounds in Bt cotton which might benefit other important cotton herbivores such as plant bugs. We studied the effects of plant defense induction on the performance of the plant bug Lygus hesperus by caging nymphs on different food sources (bolls/squares) of Bt and non-Bt cotton which were either undamaged, damaged by Bt tolerant caterpillars, or treated w

Wolbachia effects on Rift Valley fever virus infection in Culex tarsalis mosquitoes.

Innovative tools are needed to alleviate the burden of mosquito-borne diseases, and strategies that target the pathogen are being considered. A possible tactic is the use of Wolbachia, a maternally inherited, endosymbiotic bacterium that can (but does not always) suppress diverse pathogens when introduced to naive mosquito species. We investigated effects of somatic Wolbachia (strain wAlbB) infection on Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) in Culex tarsalis mosquitoes. When compared to Wolbachia-uninfected mosquitoes, there was no significant effect of Wolbachia infection on RVFV infection, dissemin

Mapping the benefit-cost ratios of interventions against bovine trypanosomosis in Eastern Africa.

This study builds upon earlier work mapping the potential benefits from bovine trypanosomosis control and analysing the costs of different approaches. Updated costs were derived for five intervention techniques: trypanocides, targets, insecticide-treated cattle, aerial spraying and the release of sterile males. Two strategies were considered: continuous control and elimination. For mapping the costs, cattle densities, environmental constraints, and the presence of savannah or riverine tsetse species were taken into account. These were combined with maps of potential benefits to produce maps of

Evaluation of habitat management strategies for the reduction of malaria vectors in northern Belize.

Mowing and burning of emergent vegetation were evaluated as potential management strategies for the control of the malaria vector, Anopheles vestitipennis, in northern Belize, Central America. The primary aim was reduction of tall dense macrophytes (dominated by Typha domingensis) as preferred larval habitat for An. vestitipennis. Nine experimental plots were established in a Typha marsh in Orange Walk District, Belize. Three plots were burned, three were treated by subaquatic mowing, and three were unaltered controls. After treatment, Typha height was most dramatically affected by the mow tre
