Fifty-two consecutive patients with condylomata acuminata were treated with CO2-laser under general anesthesia. In many of the cases, previous conventional treatment had failed. The effectiveness of the treatment was found to be between 75 and 87%. It caused few complication or complains. Eighty-three percent of the patients expressed satisfaction with the treatment. Laser treatment of condylomata acuminata is an alternative to conventional treatment in tractable cases and in cases where conventional methods are contra-indicated.

The effectiveness of the carbon dioxide laser was evaluated in the treatment of penile, anorectal, and urethral condylomata acuminata in 40 men. All but six cases of urethral condylomata were prior conventional treatment failures. Postlaser follow-up ranged between one and two years, with an average of 16 months. No patients were lost to follow-up. Postlaser recurrence rates were 7.5%. No postoperative complications occurred in this series. Carbon dioxide laser is highly successful for treating persistent and/or extensive urogenital and anal condylomata in the male patient.

Eleven hepatic resections were performed by means of a divergent Nd:YAG laser. The beam was transmitted through a fiberoptic delivery system without any handpiece. The shortest resection time and most limited ischemic damage (4 mm) were obtained with 80-W power shoots and a low divergent beam (4 degrees 2 for full angle). Fifty-seven eyes of 49 patients with senile retinoschisis were treated by argon laser photocoagulation and followed up for 3 to 6 years. In most of the treated eyes the retinoschisis either completely or partially collapsed and in none did the retinoschisis or loss of visual field progress further. Three patients with granuloma faciale were successfully treated by argon laser therapy. The intense blue-green laser light is readily absorbed by these inflammatory lesions, resulting in resolution of the clinical and microscopic abnormalities. There were no recurrences during follow-up periods of 23, 21, and 5 months, respectively. Argon laser therapy appears to be an important addition to the treatment armamentarium for this uncommon, but difficult to treat, entity.

We have used the neodymium-yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) laser effectively to cut posterior capsules and pupillary membranes, but the procedure was difficult. Using the Abraham contact lens facilitated the procedure, but may be related to the development of retinal damage.

The gynecologic use of the CO2 Laser is neither miracle-way nor useless. It is a reliable surgical instrument which, in our opinion, has often shown more promising advantages of performance and therapeutical results than the conventional physical or chemical methods. Its main draw-backs are: the need for perfect mastery of colposcopy and the purchase price which will limit the availability of this instrument, still for a long time, to a few highly equipped centers.

Pupillary block glaucoma is a potential complication of implantation. Early recognition and prompt medical therapy will generally successfully treat the condition. In some instances surgical treatment is required if medical therapy is inadequate. Laser iridectomy and laser photomydriasis are other alternatives to surgical therapy. This case reports successful treatment of pseudophakic pupillary block glaucoma using laser photomydriasis.

As an alternative to hysterectomy in patients with excessive bleeding, the endometrium was destroyed by means of the neodymium-YAG laser. The photovaporization was done under direct vision through a hysteroscope. Twenty-two patients have been treated, all but one successfully, i.e., little or no menstrual flow. The human uterus having a thick myometrium was found to be ideal for this modality. The CO2 laser has been used in a variety of lesions for two and one half years in areas other than the larynx. These lesions include viral papillomas, leukoplakias and erosive lichen planus in various otolaryngological sites. Laser therapy is compared with other modalities of treatment for similar lesions and the advantages and disadvantages of this type treatment is evaluated.
