Fractures of and near the epiphysis occur much less frequently in the lower extremities than in the upper extremities. The time required for consolidation of lower extremity fractures is twice as long as for fractures of the arm or hand. Posture and flexibility were assessed in 34 athletes. We report an unusual case of deep vein thrombosis following minor trauma in an adolescent who presented with a swollen, tender, lower extremity. Work-up consisted of a venogram which demonstrated occlusion of the deep venous system in the proximal leg. The patient was hospitalized for intravenous heparin followed by oral anticoagulation therapy. The problem of deep venous thrombosis in adolescents and the approach to diagnosis are discussed.

We report a case of neglected multiligamentous injury that developed a complete thrombotic popliteal artery block following arthroscopic surgery. Concomitant physeal fractures of the distal femur and proximal tibia are very rare in children and adolescents. They are included in the classification of the "floating knee" injuries. Twenty-eight patients with war fractures of the talus were reviewed to determine the incidence of infection and late functional results. The average age of our patients was 37.5 years. An analysis of 144 sports accidents of 275 tennis players in Switzerland (203 men, 72 women) showed fractures of bones in 5,5% open wounds in 14,5%, torsions in 33% and other injuries in 47%.
