Plasma fatty acid composition in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients: an increased omega-6/omega-3 ratio and deficiency of essential fatty acids.

Patients with end-stage renal disease, including those treated with peritoneal dialysis, have a high risk for death, particularly from cardiovascular causes. Plasma fatty acid (FA) composition is used as an indicator of disease risk, because its alteration has been related to metabolic disease and cardiovascular disease. For this purpose, we have measured plasma FA composition in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients and compared them with those of healthy subjects. This study was performed on 51 (21 M, 30 F) CAPD patients at least 6 months under dialysis, aged 20-75 years

Synthesis of PEGylated amphiphilic block copolymers with pendant linoleic moieties by combining ring-opening polymerization and click chemistry.

This study focused on synthesizing and characterizing PEGylated amphiphilic block copolymers with pendant linoleic acid (Lin) moieties as an alternative to enhance their potential in drug delivery applications. The synthesis involved a two-step process, starting with ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone (CL) and propargylated cyclic carbonate (MCP) to obtain PEG-b-P(CL-co-MCP) copolymers, which were subsequently modified via click chemistry. Various reaction conditions were explored to improve the yield and efficiency of the click chemistry step. The use of anisole as a solvent, N-(3-

Metabolic Regulation of Seasoned White Snakehead Fillets by a Lemon Essential Oil-Rutin-Chitosan Coating Under Controlled Freezing-Point Storage.

This study evaluated how a lemon essential oil-rutin-chitosan coating (CS-LEO/NE-R), prepared from a 5:95 (v/v) lemon essential oil/rutin-containing nanoemulsion and a chitosan solution containing 1.5% chitosan, 1% acetic acid, and 5% glycerol, combined with controlled freezing-point storage preserves seasoned white snakehead fillets. Compared with controlled freezing-point storage alone, the combined treatment significantly inhibited oxidation, volatile nitrogen accumulation, texture softening, and microbial growth. On Day 10, the coating group recorded a total viable count of 4.98 log CFU/g,

The Caenorhabditis elegans microbiome impacts microsporidia infection through nutrient limitation and spore inactivation.

Microsporidia are fungal parasites that can only reproduce inside the cells of a host, and they infect most animal groups, including humans and agriculturally important species. Animals also harbor a microbiome, which can shape resistance to infection, but the mechanisms by which bacteria influence microsporidia infection are poorly understood. To address this, we tested how bacteria associated with the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans affect infection by its natural microsporidian parasite, Nematocida parisii. Here we show that nematodes grown on Chryseobacterium scophthalmum or Sphingobacteri

Different fatty acid patterns in serum in patients with various thyroid diseases.

Thyroid diseases and obesity are major health issues in the 21st century. While fatty acids (FAs) are known to influence various conditions, their role in thyroid disorders remains unclear. This study investigated FA profiles in patients with thyroid diseases to assess their diagnostic potential. From 891 patients treated at the Thyroid Cancer Center of the Medical University of Gdansk (2021-2024), 173 were selected for FA analysis using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis evaluated the predictive value of individual FAs, and metabolite set en

Nutraceuticals in diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome represents a clustering of risk factors related to an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Occurrence of both metabolic syndrome and diabetes and their vascular complications share several pathogenetic features including subclinical, low-grade inflammation, altered oxidative/antioxidant status, and persistent platelet activation. Despite the availability of multiple interventions to counteract these metabolic changes, including appropriate diet, regular exercise, weight control and drugs, epidemiological data are witnessing the growing trend of the pr

Association of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Clinical Progression in Patients With ALS: Post Hoc Analysis of the EMPOWER Trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects and could be beneficial in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Higher dietary intake and plasma levels of PUFAs, in particular alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), have been associated with a lower risk of ALS in large epidemiologic cohort studies, but data on disease progression in patients with ALS are sparse. We examined whether plasma levels of ALA and other PUFAs contributed to predicting survival time and functional decline in patients with ALS. METHODS: We conducted a study among p

Perspectives on alcohol consumption: liver polyunsaturated fatty acids and essential fatty acid metabolism.

In this article, subjects diagnosed with alcoholic liver disease are shown to have lower concentrations of several polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including 18:2n6, 18:3n6, 20:3n6, 18:3n3, 22:5n3, and 22:6n3, but not 20:4n6 and 22:4n6, nor 22:5n6, in the total lipid extracts of their livers compared with findings for specimens obtained from patients diagnosed with primary biliary cirrhosis and from control subjects. Findings of studies in animals have demonstrated that prolonged alcohol consumption reduces liver polyunsaturate content. However, the effect of ethanol on the elongation/desa

Unsaturated fatty acid structure governs hierarchical assembly and digestive properties of starch-lipid complexes.

The influence of unsaturated fatty acid molecular geometry on the assembly and digestive properties of starch-lipid complexes remains unclear. Here, five UFAs with distinct chain lengths and configurations were incorporated into gelatinized wheat starch via ultrasound-assisted dynamic high-pressure microfluidization to construct hierarchical complexes. Multiscale analyses showed that UFA geometry governed amylose helix inclusion, V-type crystallinity, and lamellar packing. Monounsaturated UFAs promoted compact ordered assemblies, whereas highly unsaturated UFAs generated looser interfacial str

Genetic associations between polyunsaturated fatty acids and alopecia areata.

The influence of circulating polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on alopecia areata (AA) development remains poorly understood, with inconsistent results reported. Our study aims to evaluate their causal associations using the bidirectional Mendelian randomization method. European ancestry genome-wide association studies were used to analyze the genetic associations between PUFAs and AA (n = 211,428). Sample sizes for PUFAs were 13,527, 13,506, 114,999, 7818, and 13,549 for plasma linoleic acid (LA), omega-6, omega-3, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and PUFAs other than 18:2 (otPUFA), respectively
