[The magnesium and calcium content of pre- and postmenopausal myometrium].

Magnesium and calcium, as well as sodium and potassium, have an important influence on the physiology of contraction of the uterus. The ionic concentrations in the pre- and postmenopausal myometrium were examined. We assumed, that there are differences in the electrolytic contents because of the different functions of the corpus, isthmic part and cervix uteri during pregnancy and throughout labour. Small tissue samples from 37 premenopausal and 20 postmenopausal patients, who underwent an operation with different indications, were dissected after hysterectomy. Magnesium and calcium levels were…

Refractory potassium repletion. A consequence of magnesium deficiency.

Experimental and clinical observations support the view that uncorrected magnesium (Mg) deficiency impairs repletion of cellular potassium (K). This is consistent with the observed close association between K and Mg depletion. Concomitant Mg deficiency in K-depleted patients ranges from 38% to 42%. Refractory K repletion due to unrecognized concurrent Mg deficiency can be clinically perplexing. Refractory K repletion as a consequence of Mg deficiency may be operative in patients with congestive failure, digitalis toxicity, cisplatin therapy, and in patients receiving potent loop diuretics. The…

Magnesium deficiency and diabetes mellitus. Causes and effects.

A large body of evidence demonstrates the prevalence and adverse clinical consequences of magnesium deficiency in patients with diabetes mellitus. It would be prudent for physicians who treat these patients to consider magnesium deficiency as a contributing factor in many diabetic complications and in exacerbation of the disease itself. Repletion of the deficiency or prophylactic supplementation with oral magnesium may help avoid or ameliorate such complications as arrhythmias, hypertension, and sudden cardiac death and may even improve the course of the diabetic condition.

A role for magnesium in neonatal parathyroid gland function?

Little is known of the factors regulating parathyroid function in the neonatal period. Twenty-seven term infants born after uncomplicated pregnancies, labors, and deliveries were studied to test the hypothesis that in normal newborns the amplitude of parathyroid hormone (PTH) response to decreasing serum ionized calcium (iCa) correlates with serum magnesium (Mg) concentrations. Serum iCa (ion selective electrode, Radiometer ICA 1), PTH (1-84 intact molecules, radioimmunoassay) and Mg (atomic absorption) were measured at birth (cord blood) and 24 hours of age. Repeated measures analysis of cova…

[Magnesium deficiency and development of late diabetic complications].

Diabetics have a higher prevalence of recurrent angina, myocardial infarction and hypertension compared with healthy individuals. This is partly due to the metabolic control, and partly to the development of nephropathy, but inherited factors also seem to contribute to their development. Another factor, to some extent inherited, could be magnesium-deficiency. Up to 30% of all diabetics suffer from magnesiumdepletion, which in other disease entities has been related to angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and changes in blood lipids. Furthermore, magnesium-deficiency might be related to the …

Magnesium content of erythrocytes in patients with vasospastic angina.

The possibility that a magnesium deficiency might be the underlying cause of vasospastic angina (VA) and the efficacy of Mg administration in its treatment were studied. Subjects included 15 patients with VA and 18 healthy subjects as the control group. The erythrocyte Mg content was measured by atomic absorption, and serum Mg was measured by conventional chemical assay. The efficacy of Mg administration was studied in seven patients with VA. The results were as follows: a) The mean erythrocyte Mg content was less in the group with frequent episodes of angina (1.59 +/- 0.11 mg/dl) than in the …

Magnesium deficiency as a cause of acute intractable seizures.

Clinical and experimental investigations have shown that magnesium depletion causes a marked irritability of the nervous system, eventually resulting in epileptic seizures. Although magnesium deficiency as a cause of epilepsy is uncommon, its recognition and correction may prove life-saving. Two case reports are presented which emphasize the importance of recognizing hypomagnesaemia in patients with acute intractable seizures.

Blood magnesium status of patients with parathyroid disease.

The blood magnesium status--plasma and red blood cell (RBC) concentration and mononuclear blood cell (MBC) content of magnesium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) were determined in 6 patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism and 9 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism before and after surgical cure of the disease. The magnesium content of MBCs and concentration of RBCs increased significantly (p less than 0.01) after the surgical correction of primary hyperparathyroidism. Patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism had significant increase (p less than 0.05) of magnesium in RBCs and MBCs compared …

Relation of cardiovascular disease to potassium and magnesium deficiencies.

Potassium and magnesium deficiencies, particularly those induced by conventional loop and thiazide diuretic therapy, have been linked in clinical studies to an increased frequency in serious arrhythmias and mortality in acute myocardial infarction. Magnesium repletion has been shown not only to increase magnesium levels, but also to increase muscle potassium and to decrease the frequency of ventricular ectopic beats. Potassium replenishment alone may have a detrimental effect in magnesium-depleted patients. The potassium-sparing diuretic spironolactone (Aldactone) has been shown to spare both …

Variant angina due to deficiency of intracellular magnesium.

A 51-year-old man was diagnosed as having variant angina by documentation of typical ST elevation during anginal attack and also by showing coronary arterial spasm (#2 and #12) during hyperventilation on coronary arteriography. Large quantities of calcium blocking agents and nitrates could not improve his symptoms. Lack of intracellular magnesium was suspected from a daily excretion of urine magnesium (5.3 mEq) and magnesium tolerance test (56.7%). After hourly infusion of magnesium sulfate (80 mEq), coronary spasm could not be induced by ergonovine.

[Biochemical findings in osteoporosis. I. The significance of magnesium].

The authors examined in 60 patients with osteoporosis the serum and red cell magnesium and calcium content. Thirty-three patients suffered from senile osteoporosis, 18 patients from postmenopausal osteoporosis and nine had osteoporosis caused by corticoids. In the former two groups were signs of chronic magnesium deficiency, in the third groups there was a trend of low serum calcium levels. The results indicate the important role of magnesium in these disorders of bone metabolism.

Factors influencing magnesium absorption and metabolism in ruminants.

Magnesium is a nutrient required for all animals, but it is especially critical for ruminants. A physiological deficiency of Mg results in hypomagnesemic tetany. Typically, only female ruminants are affected, and the disturbance usually occurs during the early stages of lactation. Magnesium functions at three biochemical levels, as a cofactor at the enzymatic level, at the structural level in assembly of ribosomes, and at the whole cell level as a stabilizing force in membranes. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) can affect Mg metabolism by decreasing urinary Mg excretion and stimulating bone resorptio…

Unreliability of plasma magnesium values in asphyxiated neonates.

The severely asphyxiated neonate usually shows a decreased blood pH and, if measured, a normal plasma Mg value. This is a retrospective review of the changes in these two parameters measured 2 or 3 times in 16 asphyxiated neonates as homeostasis was reestablished. The group was comprised of all asphyxiated neonates with 2 or 3 blood pH determinations, each with a plasma Mg determination within 6 h. Repeating these two tests had been prompted by poor clinical courses that suggested acid-base imbalance and Mg deficiency. The blood pH found on first sampling (day 0.42, with 0 the first day of lif

[Magnesium--a new therapeutic alternative in primary dysmenorrhea].

50 patients suffering from primary dysmenorrhoea were treated with Magnesium (Mg 5-longoral, Artesan GmbH) in a double-blind study. After a six-month period 21 out of 25 women showed a decline of symptoms, only 4 ones reported no therapeutical effect. For monitoring treatment results prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) was measured every second month. On Mg-therapy conditions we achieved a reduction of PGF2 alpha in menstrual blood to 45% of value before treatment started. As against that 90% of basic concentration were estimated from women who received a placebo. Probably, the specific therap…

Iron, zinc and magnesium nutrition and athletic performance.

During the last decade there has been considerable interest in the idea that dietary trace elements supplementation can result in an improvement in athletic performance. The current paper discusses this idea as it relates to 3 elements: iron, zinc and magnesium. Emphasis has been placed on examining the implicit assumptions underlying the idea that mineral supplements help the athlete. These assumptions include the beliefs that the athlete has a higher than normal requirement for minerals; that the athlete consumes a diet inadequate in these minerals; and that a marginal deficiency of these el…

Magnesium therapy in premature neonates with apnea neonatorum.

Apnea, bradycardia, and neuromuscular hyperirritability have been associated with magnesium (Mg) deficiency in young human infants and weanling animals. This is a retrospective review of a clinical experience of Mg therapy among 200 premature neonates who showed physical and clinical chemical changes compatible with Mg deficiency. The 200 infants all had idiopathic apnea neonatorum, and 93% also had the respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). This review was conducted to learn whether Mg therapy was associated with a significant reduction in apnea. The author suggested that the dose of Mg be 0.4 …
