[Role of magnesium in the pathogenesis of premenstrual disorders].

The magnesium deficit is one of the components of the pathogenesis of premenstrual disorders. Hypomagnesaemia is a reason of the polymorphism of clinical presentation, structural and functional disorders of nervous system and development of psychopathological constituent of premenstrual disorders in clinics.

Magnesium for the treatment and prevention of atrial tachyarrhythmias.

Atrial tachyarrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation and flutter, occur frequently. Magnesium has been studied in the early conversion and prevention of atrial tachyarrhythmias, as well as in prevention of atrial tachyarrhythmias after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Early conversion of atrial tachyarrhythmias and control of heart rate may be greater with magnesium than with common antiarrhythmic agents. Magnesium appears to be less useful for preventing recurrent atrial tachyarrhythmias; however, discrepancies in study methodologies make interpretation of results difficult. The use of

[Abnormalities in serum magnesium concentration].

Magnesium (Mg) therapy is often proposed against stress and to correct asthenia. Thus our aim has been to review the role of Mg, the mechanisms of its homeostasis before detailing the clinical presentations and etiologies of hypo- and hypermagnesemia and their exploration. Hypomagnesemia frequently occurs but is clinically rarely recognized without biological serum ionic determinations because causing atypical signs miming those of other ion deficiencies. Hypermagnesemia is uncommon but often occurs in the presence of renal insufficiency especially with excess of Mg administration.

[New findings on the clinical significance of magnesium].

Recent findings are concerned with the diagnosis, incidence, and therapy of hypomagnesaemia. The authors discuss the importance of Mg in stress, cardiac diseases, bone metabolism, neoplasms, blood clotting, in physical exertion and the Mg content of the diet.

Magnesium and phosphorus: the neglected electrolytes.

Magnesium and phosphorus normally are present in very low serum concentrations and usually are not included in common serum electrolyte laboratory studies. Though their normal serum concentrations are relatively low, both of these ionized minerals are necessary for many critical physiologic functions, and decreases in normal serum levels can have serious deleterious effects. Some of these effects, especially in myocardial tissues, may lead to permanent tissue damage. Hospitalized patients at greatest risk for developing hypomagnesemia or hypophosphatemia are trauma victims; individuals with po

Blood magnesium levels in a mentally retarded/developmentally disabled seizure population.

Blood magnesium levels from a mentally retarded/developmentally disabled population with difficult to control seizure disorders were presented. The role of low blood magnesium with regard to seizure activity and its causes was discussed.

Magnesium homeostasis in critically ill patients.

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is a common finding in critically ill patients. Mg deficiency results primarily from gastrointestinal or urinary Mg losses, but malnutrition and decreased dietary Mg intake may hasten the development of Mg depletion. In our medical intensive-care unit, we have found hypomagnesemia in 65% of patients with normal serum creatinine concentrations. The prevalence of normomagnesemic Mg deficiency in critically ill patients may be even higher and may contribute to the pathogenesis of hypocalcemia, cardiac arrhythmias and other symptoms of Mg deficiency.

Effect of ethanol on magnesium excretion.

The effect of ethanol on magnesium excretion was studied in three normal subjects. It was found that the ingestion of 2 ml ethanol/kg body weight produced a marked immediate increase in urinary magnesium excretion, but there was no significant effect on overall magnesium balance when this amount was taken daily for eight days.
