The anti-circumsporozoite antibody response to repeated, seasonal booster doses of the malaria vaccine RTS,S/AS01E.

The recently deployed RTS,S/AS01E malaria vaccine induces a strong antibody response to the circumsporozoite protein (CSP) on the surface of … largely restricted to the rainy season and, therefore, a recent trial conducted in Burkina Faso and Mali explored the impact of repeated annual booster doses of RTS,S/AS01E given immediately prior to the malaria transmission season until children reached the age of five years. Anti-CSP antibody titres were measured in sera obtained from a randomly sele …

The duration of protection against clinical malaria provided by the combination of seasonal RTS,S/AS01E vaccination and seasonal malaria chemoprevention versus either intervention given alone.

BACKGROUND: A recent trial of 5920 children in Burkina Faso and Mali showed that the combination of seasonal vaccination with the RTS,S/AS01E malaria vaccine (primary series and two seasonal boosters) and seasonal malaria chemoprevention (four monthly cycles per year) was markedly more effective than either intervention given alone in preventing clinical malaria, severe malaria, and deaths from malaria. METHODS: In order to help optimise the timing of these two interventions, trial data were reanalysed to estimate the duration of protection against clinical malaria provided by RTS,S/AS01E whe…

[The epidemiology of yellow fever in Western Africa].

Observations made during the epidemics in Côte d'Ivoire (1982), Burkina Faso (1983), Nigeria (1986 and 1987) and Mali (1987), together with studies conducted in the last 10 years, particularly in Côte d'Ivoire, now make it possible, without calling into question the dynamics of yellow fever virus circulation in space and time, to redefine some features of the pattern suggested in 1977 and refined on a number of occasions up to 1983. The endemicity area is still the region of epizootic and enzootic sylvatic circulation, and contains the natural focus and the endemic emergence zone. --The natura…

[Clinical and medico - legal aspects of sexual aggressions at Gabriel Toure teaching hospital].

AIM: The sexual aggressions pose an important medico - legal problem. The implication of several services is often indispensable to determine the future of this aggression. Our survey objectives were to determine epidemiological and clinical characteristics of sexual aggressions and to specify the judicial continuations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We did historical cohort survey while recruiting all cases of consultation in the service for sexual aggressions. This survey spreads on a period of 60 months going from January 2004 to December 2008. A systematic health evaluation (HIV test, vaginal scr

[Early postoperative complications at the Pediatric Service of the Gabriel Touré University Hospital Center].

AIM: To determine the hospital frequency, identify the risks factors and evaluate the mortality of the early postoperative complication. PATIENTS AND METHODS: It was about a prospective study done from January first to May 31st 2006. All children from 0 to 15 years old operated in settled or urgent surgery and follow in the service were concerned of this study. RESULT: We brought together 47 cases of complication in 40 patients on a total of 631 children operated in five months. The average age of our patients was of 51.9 months +/- 47.4. The average period of hospital stay was of 4.3 days +

[Trachoma and the conjunctival impression test].

The Transferred Conjunctival Impression test (test d'Impression Conjonctivale Transférée) is a simple, sensitive and non-invasive method enabling populations at risk from Xerophthalmia to be identified. Nevertheless, the results of the test do seem to be influenced by the conjunctival pathology, trachomatous in particular. It appears that conjunctival deficit is noticeably more frequent in trachomatous than non-trachomatous subjects. The trial, involving a random sample of 450, four- to six-year-old children living in the Sahelian zone, enabled us to confirm and quantify this relation. In term

Pyronaridine-artesunate or dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine versus current first-line therapies for repeated treatment of uncomplicated malaria: a randomised, multicentre, open-label, longitudinal, controlled, phase 3b/4 trial.

BACKGROUND: Artemether-lumefantrine and artesunate-amodiaquine are used as first-line artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) in west Africa. Pyronaridine-artesunate and dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine are potentially useful for diversification of ACTs in this region, but further safety and efficacy data are required on malaria retreatment. METHODS: We did a randomised, multicentre, open-label, longitudinal, controlled phase 3b/4 clinical trial at seven tertiary centres in Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali. Eligible participants for first malaria episode and all retreatment episodes were a…

Malaria epidemiology in Kobeni department, southeastern Mauritania from 2015 to 2017.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium falciparum malaria is endemic in the southern sahelian zone of Mauritania where intense internal and trans-border human and livestock movement occurs. The risk of importation and spread of drug-resistant parasites need to be regularly assessed in this region. The objective of the study was to assess the recent malaria situation near the Mauritania-Mali border. METHODS: Between February 2015 and December 2017, patients with fever or history of fever during the previous 48 h, presenting at the health centre of Kobeni city, were screened for malaria using a rapid diagnosti…

Risk factors for high-risk human papillomavirus infection in unscreened Malian women.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the epidemiology of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in Malian women, for whom cervical cancer is the most common cancer and the second most common cause of cancer-related mortality. METHODS: Pilot study of 202 women aged 15-65 to determine the prevalence rate of high-risk HPV infection among unscreened Malian women. Information on risk factors was collected through a standardized, structured interview and clinical examination. High-risk (HR) HPV DNA was detected using signal amplification methods (hybrid capture II). RESULTS: High-risk HPV DNA was detected in 1…

Association of Schistosoma haematobium infection with protection against acute Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Malian children.

Plasmodium falciparum and Schistosoma haematobium are co-endemic parasitic diseases with worldwide distribution. Evidence suggests interactions occur between helminthic and malaria infections, although it is unclear whether this effect is beneficial or harmful to the host. Malian children 4-14 years of age with asymptomatic S. haematobium infection (SP) (n = 338) were prospectively matched by age, sex, and residence to children without schistosomiasis (SN) (n = 338) who were cleared of occult intestinal parasites, and followed-up for one malaria transmission season (25 weeks). The time to the …
