Gender roles and memory loss in old age: an exploration of linkages.

A framework relating gender roles, role loss, and memory is presented. For the now-old woman, her identity has usually been defined by her roles within the family; other personal touchstones have been less legitimate. In old age, when key family roles dwindle, many women who have relied on their families as sources of identity are placed in an anomic situation, especially women with limited resources. When few meaningful social roles exist in the present, memory becomes increasingly important as a link to develop and maintain the self. It is proposed that, without meaningful present roles to f

Memory encoding and retrieval by retrosplenial parvalbumin interneurons are impaired in Alzheimer's disease model mice.

Memory deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD) show a strong link with GABAergic interneuron dysfunctions.1,2,3,4,5,6,7 The ensemble dynamics of GABAergic interneurons represent memory encoding and retrieval,8,9,10,11,12 but how GABAergic interneuron dysfunction affects inhibitory ensemble dynamics in AD is unknown. As the retrosplenial cortex (RSC) is critical for episodic memory13,14,15,16 and is affected by β-amyloid accumulation in early AD,17,18,19,20,21 we address this question by performing Ca2+ imaging in RSC parvalbumin (PV)-expressing interneurons during a contextual fear memory task in

Whole-brain functional correlates of memory formation in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

The mesial temporal lobe is a key region for episodic memory. Accordingly, memory impairment is frequent in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. However, the functional relevance of potentially epilepsy-induced reorganisation for memory formation is still not entirely clear. Therefore, we investigated whole-brain functional correlates of verbal and non-verbal memory encoding and subsequent memory formation in 56 (25 right sided) mesial temporal lobe epilepsy patients and 21 controls. We applied an fMRI task of learning scenes, faces, and words followed by an out-of-scanner recognition

Retrograde Autobiographical Memory From PTA Emergence to Six-Month Follow-Up in Moderate to Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVE: The overwhelming focus of research on memory following traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been on anterograde amnesia, and very little attention has been paid to retrograde amnesia. There is evidence to suggest that retrograde autobiographical memory deficits exist after severe TBI, although there have been no prospective studies of autobiographical memory in a representative sample of moderate to severe cases recruited from hospital admissions. METHODS: The purpose of the present study was to report changes in autobiographical memory performance among a group of patients soon after

Specifying a Causal Role for Angular Gyrus in Autobiographical Memory.

Considerable recent evidence indicates that angular gyrus dysfunction in humans does not result in amnesia, but does impair a number of aspects of episodic memory. Patients with parietal lobe lesions have been reported to exhibit a deficit when freely recalling autobiographical events from their pasts, but can remember details of the events when recall is cued by specific questions. In apparent contradiction, inhibitory brain stimulation targeting angular gyrus in healthy volunteers has been found to have no effect on free recall or cued recall of word pairs. The present study sought to resolv

Noradrenergic modulation of emotion-induced forgetting and remembering.

We used a free-recall paradigm to establish a behavioral index of the retrograde and anterograde interference of emotion with episodic memory encoding. In two experiments involving 78 subjects, we show that negatively valenced items elicit retrograde amnesia, whereas positively valenced items elicit retrograde hypermnesia. These data indicate item valence is critical in determining retrograde amnesia and retrograde hypermnesia. In contrast, we show that item arousal induces an anterograde amnesic effect, consistent with the idea that a valence-evoked arousal mechanism compromises anterograde e

Influence of histopathologic type of hippocampal sclerosis on neuropsychological profile.

OBJECTIVE: Hippocampal sclerosis (HS) is the most common histopathological abnormality in adults with drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) who are candidates for surgery. In 2013, the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Task Force subdivided HS into three types: HS-ILAE type 1 (severe neuronal loss and gliosis predominantly in CA1 and CA4), HS-ILAE type 2 (CA1-predominant), and HS-ILAE type 3 (CA4-predominant). The aim of this study was to assess the association between HS-ILAE types and cognitive profiles of MTLE-HS patients. METHODS: A total of 302 patients were retr

Virtual brain and electroencephalography explain the variance of memory alterations in mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a heterogeneous clinical condition characterized by a wide spectrum of cognitive and behavioural manifestations. Despite numerous studies, the link between neuropsychological performance and pathophysiological signatures of the disease-including Aβ and tau accumulation along with altered excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance and brain rhythms-remains elusive. METHODS: Here Aβ/tau biomarkers were used to distinguish positive (MCI+- prodromal Alzheimer's disease) and negative (MCI-) subjects in a cohort of 30 MCI patients (18 MCI+ and 12 MCI-). Virtu

Familial Risk for Dementia, Cognitive Performance, and the Human Cerebello-Hippocampal Circuit: A Study in the European Prevention of Alzheimers Disease cohort.

The cerebellohippocampal (CBHP) circuit is increasingly implicated in episodic and spatial memory, yet its role in normal aging, dementia risk, and sex differences remains unclear. Structure and function in both the hippocampus and cerebellum have been linked to mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimers Disease, and cognitive decline in healthy older adults. Literature on the CBHP circuit is largely limited to animal studies and small samples of young adults in the context of visuospatial abilities, underscoring the need for large, diverse aging cohorts to establish CB-HP connectivity as an early,

Slc20a2-Deficient Mice Exhibit Multisystem Abnormalities and Impaired Spatial Learning Memory and Sensorimotor Gating but Normal Motor Coordination Abilities.

BACKGROUND: Primary familial brain calcification (PFBC, OMIM#213600), also known as Fahr's disease, is a rare autosomal dominant or recessive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by bilateral and symmetrical microvascular calcifications affecting multiple brain regions, particularly the basal ganglia (globus pallidus, caudate nucleus, and putamen) and thalamus. The most common clinical manifestations include cognitive impairment, neuropsychiatric signs, and movement disorders. Loss-of-function mutations in SLC20A2 are the major genetic causes of PFBC. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to invest

Matured Hop-Derived Bitter Components in Beer Improve Hippocampus-Dependent Memory Through Activation of the Vagus Nerve.

Improving and maintaining memory function is effective in preventing cognitive decline and dementia. Previously, we demonstrated that iso-α-acids, the hop-derived bitter components in beer, prevent cognitive impairment in an Alzheimer's disease mouse model. In this report, we investigated the effects of matured hop bitter acids (MHBA) containing components of oxides derived from α- and β-acids, and structurally similar to iso-α-acids, on cognitive function using behavioral pharmacological procedures. MHBA and the representative components of MHBA, 4'-hydroxyallohumulinone (HAH) and 4'-hydroxy-

Anterior thalamic nuclei lesions have a greater impact than mammillothalamic tract lesions on the extended hippocampal system.

The anterior thalamic nuclei (ATN), mammillary bodies and their interconnecting fiber tract, the mammillothalamic tract (MTT), are important components of an extended hippocampal circuit for episodic memory. In humans, damage to the MTT or ATN in many disorders is associated with severe anterograde amnesia and it is assumed that their influence on memory is functionally equivalent. The relative influence of these two structures on memory has not, however, been assessed explicitly. Here, a direct comparison found that only ATN lesions impaired spatial reference memory in rats. ATN lesions produ

Detection of age-dependent working memory deterioration in APP751SL mice.

Despite huge advances on Alzheimer's disease (AD) etiology, the clinical diagnosis remains the unique commonly used tool to detect the onset of the disease. For instance, epidemiological studies report that the combination of episodic and working memory disorders represents the most consistent sign of progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD. However, such working memory disorders failed to be observed early in transgenic mouse models of AD because the behavioral procedures used do not tackle properly crucial components of working memory. The aim of the present work was to assess early

Developmental dyslexia and explicit long-term memory.

The reduced verbal long-term memory capacities often reported in dyslexics are generally interpreted as a consequence of their deficit in phonological coding. The present study was aimed at evaluating whether the learning deficit exhibited by dyslexics was restricted only to the verbal component of the long-term memory abilities or also involved visual-object and visual-spatial domain. A further goal of the present study was to investigate the predictive value of non-verbal long-term memory abilities with respect to word and non-word reading in dyslexic children. In accordance with these aims, p

Functional brain imaging in 14 patients with dissociative amnesia reveals right inferolateral prefrontal hypometabolism.

Dissociative amnesia is a condition usually characterized by severely impaired retrograde memory functioning in the absence of structural brain damage. Recent case studies nevertheless found functional brain changes in patients suffering from autobiographical-episodic memory loss in the cause of dissociative amnesia. Functional changes were demonstrated in both resting state and memory retrieval conditions. In addition, some but not all cases also showed other neuropsychological impairments beyond retrograde memory deficits. However, there is no group study available that examined potential fu

Dissociation between attentional set shifting and habit learning: a longitudinal case study.

We report a patient (ST) with predominant damage to the right neostriatum, caused by a rare cerebral angiitis. The testing procedure was focused on attentional set shifting (Wisconsin Card Sorting Test; WCST) and habit learning (probabilistic classification learning; PCL). ST showed impairments in the WCST, digit span backward, alphabet span, and PCL procedures, whereas he exhibited spared IQ, short-term verbal memory, object recognition, episodic and semantic memory. After 1 month of steroid therapy, there was a significant improvement in the WCST, digit span backward and alphabet span tests,

Preserved semantic access in global amnesia and hippocampal damage.

C.B., a right-handed 33-year-old man, presented with anterograde amnesia after acute heart block. Cognitive abilities were normal except for serious impairment of long-term episodic memory. The access to semantic information was fully preserved. Magnetic resonance showed high signal intensity and marked volume loss in the hippocampus bilaterally; the left and right parahippocampal gyrus, lateral occipito-temporal gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus, and lateral temporal cortex were normal. This case underlines that global amnesia associated with hippocampal damage does not affect semantic memory. A

[Neuropsychological aspects of dementia diagnosis].

In the interdisciplinary diagnostics of dementia neuropsychology is applied in early detection, in differential diagnostics and in progressive course assessment. With standardized neuropsychological testing severity and nature of cognitive dysfunction is assessed. In particular memory disorders, aphasia, apraxia, agnosia and disorders of executive functions are assessed by these methods. In early stage of Alzheimer's Disease episodic and semantic memory as well as certain language functions are affected. Apractic and agnostic disorders often appear only in the later course of the disease. Depe

Early childhood amnesia: a quantitative study with implications for the study of retrograde amnesia after brain injury.

Measurement of retrieval of episodic memories ascribed to the various years of early childhood was made over a three-month period of search by 17 normal young adults. The distribution of episodes ascribed to various ages is described, and it is shown that the recovery of memory from early childhood tends to show features of shrinking retrograde amnesia. Methods which were used to recover very early episodes are described, and implications for the study of shrinking retrograde amnesia in brain-damaged patients are discussed.

Acute single non-sedative doses of NOP receptor agonists affect acquisition of object location memory but repeated high doses do not induce long-lasting deficits.

The Nociceptin/Orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) system has been shown to modulate various aspects of long-term memory. It is therefore important to study the effects on memory impairment by nociceptin receptor (NOP) agonists under preclinical development. In the present study, we investigated the effect of systemic injection of two small molecule selective NOP agonists, AT-202 and AT-524, in the object location memory task in male and female mice. Since high doses of NOP agonists have been shown to induce sedation, we first determined the sedative doses for the two compounds and found them to be higher in
