Culinary memories, perceived barriers, and motivations for home cooking among younger and older adults in Spain: a qualitative cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Home cooking is a key determinant of health and cultural transmission. In Mediterranean countries like Spain, contemporary social changes are among the factors that may have contributed to shifts in traditional dietary patterns, with young adults potentially more exposed to a dietary transition. This study comparatively explores culinary perceptions, childhood memories, perceived barriers, and daily motivations related to home cooking among young and older adults in Spain. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative, cross-sectional design based on content analysis was conducted across Spain u

Advances in sample preparation and HPLC-MS/MS methods for determining amyloid-β peptide in biological samples: a review.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), a neurological disorder, is a major public health concern and the most common form of dementia. Its typical symptoms include memory loss, confusion, changes in personality, and cognitive impairment, which result in patients gradually losing independence. Over the last decades, some studies have focused on searching for effective biomarkers as early diagnostic indicators of AD. Amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides have been consolidated as reliable AD biomarkers and have been incorporated into modern diagnostic research criteria. However, quantitative analysis of Aβ peptides in bio

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia in India: an analysis of prognostic factors using a single treatment regimen.

BACKGROUND: In the past, treatment results in Indian children with ALL have been poor, primarily due to inadequate chemotherapy and supportive care, but perhaps reflecting differences from Western countries in the pattern of subtypes. In an attempt to improve survival, we have used a more intensive treatment protocol, MCP841, and examined prognostic factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five hundred thirty previously untreated patients < 25 years of age with ALL were entered on study at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. Treatment consisted of three successive induction cycles, consolidation and si

Artificial intelligence techniques for classification of Alzheimer's disease using neuroimaging data: a review.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a gradually advancing brain disorder marked by memory impairment. The incurable, progressive nature of the disease leads to the dementia stage. Treatment is effective in the early stage, and it can be controlled but not cured. Artificial Intelligence (AI) learning models are used in medical science to detect and classify diseases into specific categories. Features are extracted from medical images and trained using AI learning models to perform an accurate diagnosis of AD. Recent advancements in machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models have demonstrated s

The Clinical Impact of End-of-Consolidation Measurable Residual Disease in High-Risk Pediatric B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

IntroductionBlinatumomab (BLINA) has improved event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) in pediatric patients with high-risk B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and has become an effective bridging therapy to hematopoietic cell transplantation. However, the prognostic significance of end-of-consolidation (EoC) measurable residual disease (MRD) in the current BLINA-incorporated treatment era remains unclear.MethodsWe retrospectively enrolled pediatric patients diagnosed with high-risk B-cell ALL between February 2022 and December 2024 at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Patients we

Implementation of an integrated infectious disease and substance use disorder team for injection drug use-associated infections: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalizations for severe injection drug use-related infections (SIRIs) are characterized by high costs, frequent patient-directed discharge, and high readmission rates. Beyond the health system impacts, these admissions can be traumatizing to people who inject drugs (PWID), who often receive inadequate treatment for their substance use disorders (SUD). The Jackson SIRI team was developed as an integrated infectious disease/SUD treatment intervention for patients hospitalized at a public safety-net hospital in Miami, Florida in 2020. We conducted a qualitative study to identify p

Exercises in anatomy: tetralogy of Fallot.

It is axiomatic that those performing surgery on the congenitally malformed heart require a thorough knowledge of the lesions they will be called upon to correct. The necessary anatomical knowledge is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain at first hand, since relatively few centres now hold archives of specimens obtained in an appropriately legal fashion from the patients unfortunately dying in previous years. One centre with such an archive is Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, known previously as Chicago Memorial Children's Hospital. The archive was established by Fa

The Complex Interaction Between Sleep-Related Information, Misinformation, and Sleep Health: Call for Comprehensive Research on Sleep Infodemiology and Infoveillance.

The complex interplay between sleep-related information-both accurate and misleading-and its impact on clinical public health is an emerging … ng sleep disorders. Simultaneously, poor sleep itself impairs critical cognitive functions, such as memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and decision-making. These impairments can heighten individuals' vulnerability to misinformation, creating a vicious cycle that further entrenches poor sleep habits and unhealthy behaviors. Sleep deprivation is known to reduce …

Thalamo-Cortical and Thalamo-Thalamic Coupling During Sleep and Wakefulness in Rats.

Introduction: The thalamus, a heterogeneous brain structure, is involved in the generation of sleep-related thalamo-cortical oscillations. Higher order nuclei might possess a distinct function compared with first-order nuclei in brain communication. Here it is investigated whether this distinction can also be found during the process of falling asleep and deepening of slow-wave sleep. Methods: A nonlinear version of Granger causality was used to describe changes in directed network activity between the somatosensory cortex and rostral reticular thalamic nucleus (rRTN) and caudal reticular thal

Hypnosedative-induced complex behaviours : incidence, mechanisms and management.

A number of news items and case reports describing complex behaviours (e.g. sleep driving, sleep cooking, sleep eating, sleep conversations, sleep sex) associated with the use of hypnosedative medications have recently received considerable attention. Regulatory agencies examining these reports have subsequently issued warnings regarding the potential of hypnosedative agents to produce complex behaviours. Despite these warnings, little is known about the likelihood, presentation, treatment or prevention of hypnosedative-induced complex behaviours. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the

CURE: a phase-based therapeutic framework for chronic inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammation represents a central mechanism underlying the persistence of immune-mediated diseases. Unlike acute inflammation, which resolves through coordinated regulatory checkpoints and active resolution programs, chronic inflammation stabilizes in pathological states maintained by cytokine redundancy, tissue-resident immune memory, and self-reinforcing feedback loops that resist termination. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK: Here, we introduce the CURE framework (CONTROL - UNLOAD and RESET - EQUILIBRATE), a phase-based therapeutic model grounded in systems immunology and nonlinear

Neuropsychiatric manifestations following chimeric antigen receptor T cell therapy for cancer: a systematic review of clinical outcomes and management strategies.

BACKGROUND: Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy has emerged as a transformative modality in the treatment of patients with cancer. However, it is increasingly evident that this therapeutic approach is not without its challenges. The unique nature of CAR-T cells as living drugs introduces a distinct set of side effects. As the application of CAR-T cell therapy expands to treat a broader range of diseases, it becomes increasingly important to devise effective strategies for handling the associated toxicities. Challenges in treating patients with CAR-T cells include addressing complica

Self-management challenges and psychosocial support needs in clean intermittent catheterization: a qualitative study of individuals with neurogenic bladder and caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is widely regarded as the preferred approach to bladder management for individuals with neurogenic bladder (NB). Nevertheless, a considerable gap persists between evidence and clinical practice: patients and caregivers frequently encounter self-management barriers that compromise clinical outcomes during CIC. This qualitative study explores these barriers to provide an empirical foundation for developing tailored strategies that improve quality of care. DESIGN: A descriptive qualitative study. METHODS: From August to October 2025, a conven

Predictive value and weight of factors associated with cognitive performance in Hispanics/Latinos enrolled in the Health and Aging Brain Study: Health Disparities.

INTRODUCTION: In this analysis of cognitively unimpaired (CU) Hispanic participants from the Health and Aging Brain Study: Health Disparities (HABS-HD), we aimed to identify the main predictor factors for cognitive performance and their relative importance (weight). METHODS: The HABS-HD is a community-based longitudinal cohort study. Data from 952 CU Hispanics, enrolled from 2017 to February 2024, were analyzed. Random forest, an assembly learning method based on decision trees, was used to cross-sectionally forecast the predictive value of 42 risk factors (4 demographic variables, 4 socioeco

Intensive chemotherapy for peripheral T-cell lymphomas.

Forty-two patients with previously untreated peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCL) were treated with an intensive chemotherapy protocol. Either the BACOP or the m-BACOD regimen was used for induction. Patients achieving complete clinical remission after three courses were given intensive consolidation and maintenance chemotherapy similar to the L10/L17M protocol designed by the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Group for acute lymphoblastic leukemia and lymphoblastic lymphoma. There were 27 (64 per cent) males and 15 (36 per cent) females. The median age was 54 years (mean 53, range 15 to 68). Seven of th

Fludarabine and rituximab with escalating doses of lenalidomide followed by lenalidomide/rituximab maintenance in previously untreated chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL): the REVLIRIT CLL-5 AGMT phase I/II study.

Despite recent advances, chemoimmunotherapy remains a standard for fit previously untreated chronic lymphocytic leukaemia patients. Lenalidomide had activity in early monotherapy trials, but tumour lysis and flare proved major obstacles in its development. We combined lenalidomide in increasing doses with six cycles of fludarabine and rituximab (FR), followed by lenalidomide/rituximab maintenance. In 45 chemo-naive patients, included in this trial, individual tolerability of the combination was highly divergent and no systematic toxicity determining a maximum tolerated dose was found.
