Cysts involving the meniscus are commonly identified on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the knee. Most meniscal cysts are defined as parameniscal cysts created by synovial fluid extravasation through a tear in the meniscus into the adjacent soft tissues. Intrameniscal cysts are less common and do not extend to the articular surface. These cysts represent a management dilemma for the treating clinician, where established guidelines do not exist. Surgical management of intrameniscal cysts is based on initial diagnostic arthroscopy, confirming the absence of an intra-articular tear, which wou…

BACKGROUND: The reoperation rate after primary meniscal repair is about 20%. Thus far, it has remained unclear whether there are distinct individual preconditions that may be associated with a better or worse outcome of this procedure. We therefore analysed typical biochemical mediators in the synovial fluid (SF) of patients with meniscus tear before arthroscopic meniscal refixation and correlated their concentrations to the occurrence of re-rupture after meniscus repair.
METHODS: In this study, 48 patients with meniscus ruptures were included. SF samples were taken intraoperatively prior to …

In this study, we aim to evaluate the arthroscopic findings of meniscal bucket handle tears and to correlate them with the proposed MR imaging signs of meniscal bucket handle tears suggested in the literature. Thirty-six patients who had a diagnosis of bucket handle tear in arthroscopy, in either medial or lateral meniscus, were included in our study (32 males and 4 females). Meniscal tears were evaluated in arthroscopy according to Dandy's classification. The MRIs were retrospectively analyzed regarding the following findings: absence of bow tie sign, presence of double posterior cruciate lig…

Current treatments for medial meniscus lesions in association with CCL ruptures have shown disappointing long-term outcomes. Meniscal suturing may improve the outcome, but their clinical application remains limited. This study aims to assess the practicability of a minimally invasive DNT to facilitate meniscal suturing in dogs. Ten stifles of eight client-owned dogs with arthroscopically confirmed CCL disease and medial meniscal tears in the abaxial third of the meniscus were included. The described suture technique was applied under joint distraction using the Titan joint distractor. Surgical…

This prospective case series aimed to investigate the contrast sensitivity function before and after lacrimal passage intubation (LPI) in eyes with epiphora due to lacrimal passage obstruction. We included 58 eyes of 51 patients who underwent LPI for lacrimal passage obstruction. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity function, and lower tear meniscus were compared before LPI and one month after lacrimal duct stent removal. The area under the log contrast sensitivity function (AULCSF) was calculated for the analyses. Lower tear meniscus was assessed using anterior segmen…

Previous studies have documented how partial and complete meniscectomy affect articular contact pressure, but changes in load transfer throu … ftware to measure trabecular bone strain. Measurements were made on specimens with an intact medial meniscus, after removal of the inner (2/3) of the meniscus, and after complete meniscectomy. Partial meniscectomy caused minimal increases in trabecular bone strain throughout the proximal tibia. However specimens with complete meniscectomy had significant t …

The clinical diagnosis of meniscus lesions is often difficult. The authors have therefore used arthrograpy of the knee with double contrast medium. The fluoroscopic technique used in fifty cases is described. The results obtained are reported and compared with 105 other cases in which arthrography was carried out with standard radiological technique. The diagnostic accuracy for meniscus lesions is very high.

Meniscus is an important structure within the knee to maintain stability and load gravity distribution. Compared with meniscectomy, timely meniscal repair can reduce the risk of knee regression and laxity. Various methods have been studied to repair the meniscus. Among them, the outside-in technique is appropriate to repair anterior and middle segments of the meniscus. A number of modifications of this technique have been described in previous literatures. However, it still has disadvantages, such as complex intra-articular maneuvers, requiring extra devices sometimes. Therefore, we have devel…

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1994eng
The diagnostic efficiency of the Optical Catheter System (OCS), which uses a 1.7-mm arthroscope, was compared with that of conventional arthroscopy in 50 patients with various knee derangements in standard arthroscopic conditions. Correct diagnoses were obtained with the OCS in 98% of anterior cruciate ligament derangements--92%-98% of those involving the medial and lateral meniscus, respectively--and 96% of cartilage disorders. No false-positives were noted for anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus injuries. False-negatives were caused by abundant intraarticular bleeding (no tourniquet was …

The results of selective magnetic resonance imaging of the knee were compared with those of arthroscopy in a prospective series of fifty patients. A specifically designed protocol for imaging, producing T1 sagittal images interleaved at four millimeters while the patient's foot was in 20 degrees of external rotation, was utilized. This technique, called selective magnetic resonance imaging, yielded excellent visualization of the posterior cruciate ligament, medial meniscus, and lateral meniscus in all patients. However, in only 76 per cent of the patients was the anterior cruciate ligament wel…

BACKGROUND: The meniscus is a collagenous and elastic tissue that plays a crucial role in preventing wear and tear within the knee joint. Meniscus root tears are a common knee pathology that can significantly impact joint function. One of the prevalent surgical techniques for repairing meniscus root tears is the transtibial pull-out method, favored by many orthopedic surgeons. It is essential to consider that displacement of the meniscus root and inadequate stabilization during the rehabilitation period are likely contributing factors to the failure of meniscus root repair outcomes. Understand…

BACKGROUND: Meniscal cysts are not uncommon in clinical practice, with reported incidence rates varying from 1 to 22%. Most meniscal cysts are parameniscal cysts, which are created by extravasation of synovial fluid through the meniscal tear into the adjacent soft tissue. In contrast, intrameniscal cysts in which the fluid collects in the meniscus are very rare. We encountered a teenager with a huge intrameniscal cyst accompanied by a small vertical meniscal tear in the red-white zone of the upper surface of the medial meniscus. A literature search revealed no information regarding the appropr…

To our knowledge, the case of association of discoid lateral and medial menisci in the same knee has not yet been reported. There are several factors which may contribute in the development of discoid meniscus: usually congenital, the types described by SMILLIE and WRISBERG must be distinguished and have not the same prognosis; thus, the discoid meniscus only acquired after birth seems rare.

Meniscal injuries significantly impact knee function and pose clinical challenges globally. Conservative treatment and surgery are currently the more commonly used treatments, and there are still long-term joint problems such as incomplete meniscus healing and knee pain. Tissue engineering presents a promising alternative by using biomaterials, cellular therapies, and bioactive factors to repair meniscal damage. Despite the promising preclinical results, clinical applications still face challenges such as insufficient biomechanical strength, weak regenerative ability, or low durability. This r…
