A chromosomal analysis was carried out on two colorectal carcinoma cell lines (WiDr and COLO 205), which were established 15-20 years ago in the US and were collected by the Cell Bank of the Veterans General Hospital in Taipei. Among the 200 cells counted, 65.5% of WiDr (male) had 68-73 chromosomes, while 74% of the COLO 205 (female) had 70-76 chromosomes per cell. Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) was studied in PHA-stimulated peripheral blood lymphocytes from 36 newly diagnosed and untreated leukemic patients: 16 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), 10 with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL), and 10 with chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML). Human blood has been irradiated with alpha-particles from an external source of curium-242. The collimated alpha-particles entered the blood with an energy of 4-9 MeV and were almost completely absorbed by the blood. After culturing for 48 hours, the dicentric yield in the lymphocytes at the first metaphase was measured as a function of dose to the blood.
