OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if analysis of pepsin/pepsinogen in middle ear effusions can be considered a diagnostic marker for laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) in children with otitis media with effusion (OME).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ambulatory 24-hour dual-probe pH monitoring was carried out on 31 children with OME. Middle ear effusions were collected from 17 children during myringotomy. Total pepsin/pepsinogen concentrations in effusions were measured by ELISA using antipepsin antibody.

A retrospective review of adenoidectomies was carried out at the Montreal Children's Hospital, Montreal, Quebec. We examined two groups of teenagers who had been surgically treated as small children for cleft palate. Most patients were between 13 and 21 years of age. CASE REPORT: A 62-year-old woman developed acute mastoiditis as a complication of otitis media. Cortical mastoidectomy revealed deposits of metastatic non-small cell lung carcinoma around the sigmoid sinus. The patient had previously received treatment for lung cancer, but was thought to be in remission.
