Nursing staff's perspectives on and knowledge about geriatric care using the geriatric institutional assessment profile in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Preventing adverse outcomes in older hospitalized adults requires gerontological and geriatric knowledge, including care approaches tailored to their complex needs. To improve geriatric care standards, it is important to gain knowledge of hospital-employed staff's knowledge about care of older adults and their patterns of care. This study aimed to assess Danish hospital-employed nursing staff's general knowledge about older adults, their clinical geriatric knowledge and their perceptions of the geriatric care environment using the Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile (GIAP).

Evidence-Based Insights for the Development and Talent Promotion of Young Athletes in a National Sports Context.

The development of young athletes continues to be a key concern for sports organizations, coaches and policy makers. In Sweden, the public debate on the balance between early talent promotion programs and more inclusive, long-term athlete development models has recently intensified. This discussion reflects the general global tensions within youth sport systems between high performance ambitions and the goal of lifelong sport, as well as other societal goals related to sport. Taking the Swedish context as a starting point, this perspective article explores the challenges and opportunities in i

Thalamocortical contributions to cognitive task activity.

Thalamocortical interaction is a ubiquitous functional motif in the mammalian brain. Previously (Hwang et al., 2021), we reported that lesions to network hubs in the human thalamus are associated with multi-domain behavioral impairments in language, memory, and executive functions. Here, we show how task-evoked thalamic activity is organized to support these broad cognitive abilities. We analyzed functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from human subjects that performed 127 tasks encompassing a broad range of cognitive representations. We first investigated the spatial organization of

Sex differences in brain modular organization in chronic pain.

Men and women can exhibit different pain sensitivities, and many chronic pain conditions are more prevalent in one sex. Although there is evidence of sex differences in the brain, it is not known whether there are sex differences in the organization of large-scale functional brain networks in chronic pain. Here, we used graph theory with modular analysis and machine-learning of resting-state-functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 220 participants: 155 healthy controls and 65 individuals with chronic low back pain due to ankylosing spondylitis, a form of arthritis. We found an extensiv

Patient-centered care's relationship with substance use disorder treatment utilization.

BACKGROUND: Calls for more patient-centered care are growing in the substance use disorder (SUD) treatment field. However, evidence is sparse regarding whether patient-centered care improves access to, or utilization of, effective treatment services. METHODS: Using nationally representative survey data from SUD treatment clinics in the United States, we examine the association between patient-centered clinical care and the utilization of six services: methadone, buprenorphine, behavioral treatment, routine medical care, HIV testing, and suicide prevention counseling. We measured clinics' prac

Research Gaps in Practice Guidelines for Acute Postoperative Pain Management in Adults: Findings From a Review of the Evidence for an American Pain Society Clinical Practice Guideline.

UNLABELLED: Acute postoperative pain is a common clinical condition that, when poorly controlled, can result in a number of significant negative consequences. The American Pain Society commissioned an evidence-based guideline on the management of postoperative pain to promote evidence-based, safe, and effective perioperative pain management. An interdisciplinary panel developed 31 key questions and inclusion criteria to guide the evidence review. Investigators reviewed 6556 abstracts from multiple electronic databases up to November 2012, an updated evidence review to October 2014, and key ref

Automatic processing of semantic relations in fMRI: neural activation during semantic priming of taxonomic and thematic categories.

Most current models of knowledge organization are based on hierarchical or taxonomic categories (animals, tools). Another important organizational pattern is thematic categorization, i.e. categories held together by external relations, a unifying scene or event (car and garage). The goal of this study was to compare the neural correlates of these categories under automatic processing conditions that minimize strategic influences. We used fMRI to examine neural correlates of semantic priming for category members with a short stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) of 200 ms as subjects performed a lexi

Plastic interactions between hand and face cortical representations in patients with trigeminal neuralgia: a somatosensory-evoked potentials study.

Neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies suggest that pain may play a major role in determining cortical somatosensory rearrangements even in the adult brain. The re-organizational power of pain, however, has been tested in models in which massive deafferentation co-existed with pain (e.g. in phantom pain). Moreover, information on whether spinal and brainstem changes contribute to pain-related plasticity in humans is meagre. We used the non-invasive somatosensory evoked potentials technique in patients with right primary trigeminal neuralgia and no clinical signs of large-diameter fibers o

Developing and implementing a remote patient management program at a large academic children's hospital.

BACKGROUND: Remote patient monitoring (RPM) can improve access, engagement, and clinical outcomes, yet evidence describing how health systems develop, scale, and sustain enterprise-wide RPM programs remains limited, particularly in pediatrics. We describe the development of a centralized RPM program at a large academic children's hospital and lessons learned from implementing 16 programs across diverse clinical settings. METHODS: Beginning with a single cardiology pilot in 2021, we iteratively developed an enterprise RPM model spanning complex transitions from hospital to home, perioperative

Integrating 'NeedCraft' and 'NeedNurture': a dual-level realist-informed intervention protocol to enhance basic psychological needs at work.

PURPOSE: From a self-determination theory (SDT) perspective, need crafting holds that the basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness can be proactively shaped through intentional changes in behavior and cognition. This protocol outlines the development of an SDT-based intervention targeting both employees ['NeedCraft' (NC)] and their managers ['NeedNurture' (NN)] to enhance need-based experiences in a South African mining organization. METHODS: The protocol proposes a quasi-experimental mixed-methods design with a partially randomized delayed-start, assigning departme

Near Misses as Signals of System Vulnerability in Thoracic Surgery: A Narrative Review on Quality Improvement and Patient Safety.

Near misses-clinical events that could have resulted in patient harm but did not-are increasingly recognized as critical yet underutilized sources of insight in surgical quality improvement. In thoracic surgery, where procedures are physiologically demanding and care pathways are highly interdependent, near misses frequently precede major complications and expose latent system vulnerabilities rather than isolated technical errors. A structured narrative review methodology was employed, including a targeted literature search of major biomedical databases and thematic synthesis of relevant studi
