The effect of prolonged adminstration of ehtanol on cardiac metabolism, contractility, and ultrastructure was investigated. Dogs received 400 ml of a 25 percent solution of ethanol during a period of 3-6 months. Repeated heart muscle biopsied revealed a significant diminution in the activity of intramitochondrial NAD-linked isocitrate dehydrogenase in the animals exposed to alcohol. Oxidative, phosphorylation of mitochondria was measured polarographically using a vibrating oxygen electrode; respiratory control index and mitochondrial oxygen consumption were markedly reduced (p less than 0.001)

Ischemic-reperfusion (I/R) is a major event in the pathogenesis of ischemic heart disease that leads to higher rate of mortality. We developed a new experimental approach to study the effects of local injury in a multicellular preparation and tested the ability of the method to induce reperfusion arrhythmias in cardiomyocyte monolayers. Holter monitoring was done prospectively in 50 adult patients of chronic renal failure (CRF) before and during haemodialysis. Frequent premature ventricular contractions (PVC's) were present in 3 (6%), all during dialysis (Gp I). Sporadic PVC's were seen in 6 (12%) and rest 41 (82%) had no PVC (Gp II). Premature atrial contractions (PAC's) were frequent in 5 (10%) (one had precipitation during dialysis), sporadic in 7 (14%) and none in 38 (76%). Ventricular tachycardia (VT) was not seen. Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) was observed in 5. No biochemical parameter correlated with arrhythmias.

For unclear reasons, myocardial infarction is rare in childhood sickle cell disease, whereas lung, bone, and brain infarcts are more common. During vasoocclusive crisis and infection, acute myocardial ischemia and chronic volume overload from anemia may result in myocardial dysfunction. We report a child who had reversible cardiac dysfunction that mimicked myocardial infarction.

A filtered QRS (fQRS) was recorded by signal averaging in 7-day-old myocardial infarction (MI) in dogs to detect late potential (LP). The criteria for the LP included a duration of fQRS (D) greater than or equal to 60 msec and a voltage in the last 15 msec (V15) less than or equal to 10 microV. These parameters were determined from the control data from 15 dogs without infarction (D: 45 to 60 msec and V15: 12.0 to 83.6 microV). On the seventh day of infarction, the D had increased from 53.5 +/- 4.7 to 62.2 +/- 9.6 msec (P less than 0.05) and the V15 decreased from 38.6 +/- 19.5 to 18.4 +/- 16.
