Alcoholic polyneuropathy is a common disorder, characterized by nonspecific clinical, electromyographic, and pathologic features. Nerve conduction studies and needle electromyography disclose findings consistent with a generalized, sensorimotor, axonal degenerative, polyneuropathy. We employed simultaneous measurement of the crossed and uncrossed acoustic reflex (AR) and a signal-averaging technique to evaluate supra-threshold amplitude characteristics of the AR. By evaluating AR amplitude relationships in a mathematical model based on known afferent, efferent, and central pathway effects, we are able to compare results from a variety of patients and to make meaningful diagnostic interpretations.

Two siblings suffering from acro-osteolysis, a rare disorder, are discussed. Although three distinct types of acro-osteolysis, namely familial, idiopathic, and due to vinyl-chloride, are clearly defined, these patients did not fit into any category. Twelve chemical rhyzolisis (surgical instilation of 10 c.c. of 15% NaCl solution) of trigeminal nerve were performed in 11 patients with trigeminal neuralgia resistent to medical treatment. Using the F wave, a simple equation was devised to calculate the ratio between motor nerve conduction time from the spinal cord to the stimulus site and that of the remaining nerve segment to the muscle (F ratio). This electromyographic study was undertaken to assess the peripheral nervous system in patients with various types of paraplegia. Twelve patients were studied. In 8 patients the paraplegia was of the spastic type while 4 had flaccid paraplegia. Electromyographic abnormalities consisting of denervation potentials, slowed conduction and inexcitability of nerve were demonstrated in the lower limbs of all patients.
