What are the psychological, computational and neural underpinnings of language? Are these neurocognitive correlates dedicated to language? Do different parts of language depend on distinct neurocognitive systems? Here I address these and other issues that are crucial for our understanding of two fundamental language capacities: the memorization of words in the mental lexicon, and the rule-governed combination of words by the mental grammar. According to the declarative/procedural model, the mental lexicon depends on declarative memory and is rooted in the temporal lobe, whereas the mental gram

This paper reviews architectonic subdivisions and connections of the orbital and medial prefrontal cortex (OMPFC) in rats, monkeys and humans. Cortico-cortical connections provide the basis for recognition of 'medial' and 'orbital' networks within the OMPFC. These networks also have distinct connections with structures in other parts of the brain. The orbital network receives sensory inputs from several modalities, including olfaction, taste, visceral afferents, somatic sensation and vision, which appear to be especially related to food or eating. In contrast, the medial network provides the m

Luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) neurons are unique among hypothalamic neurons in that they originate outside of the central nervous system. In most vertebrates, LHRH-immunoreactive (-ir) neurons are detected in the epithelium of the medial olfactory pit soon after its formation. The LHRH-ir neurons migrate out of the placodal epithelium and into the brain along a migration route that consists of the central processes of the terminal, olfactory, and vomeronasal nerves. LHRH-ir cell migration follows a highly ordered course from the initial appearance of the LHRH-ir cells in the epi

BACKGROUND: The AV node is frequently the site of reentrant rhythms. These rhythms arise from a slow and a fast pathway for which the anatomic and functional substratum remain debated. This study proposes a new explanation for dual-pathway physiology in which the posterior nodal extension (PNE) provides the substratum for the slow pathway.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The anatomic and functional properties of the PNE were studied in 14 isolated rabbit heart preparations. A PNE was found in all studied preparations. It appeared as an elongated bundle of specialized tissues lying along the lower side o

The purpose of this study was to investigate the communicative routes via the cranial nerves among the middle ear, the auditory tube, the inner ear, and the subarachnoid space under nearly physiological conditions. Various volumes of Indian ink were slowly injected into the facial nerve trunk of rabbits at the stylomastoid foramen, then serial sections of the heads were observed under the light microscope. This study yielded the following results: (i) Indian ink penetrated into the subarachnoid space through the internal auditory canal and/or the jugular foramen along the nerve sheaths of the

Interhemispheric connections were studied by injecting a mixture of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and wheatgerm agglutinin conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) into multiple sites in dorsolateral occipital and parietal cortex of one cerebral hemisphere of three galagos (Galago crassicaudatus) and two owl monkeys (Aotus trivirgatus) within seven days of birth. Cortex was either separated from the rest of the brain, flattened and cut parallel to the surface to aid reconstructing surface-view patterns of labeled neurons and processes, or cut in standard coronal or parasagittal planes t

Damage to the medial region of the amygdala has been shown to impair mineralocorticoid-induced sodium appetite, while leaving intact sodium appetite induced through sodium depletion. This effect may result from the interruption of the flow of information through the stria terminalis (ST), a neural pathway linking the medial amygdala with the ventral forebrain. We determined the effect of transecting the ST of the rat, at a point remote from the medial amygdala, on sodium appetite induced with the administration of mineralocorticoids and with the natriuretic furosemide. Similar to control and a

A double labeling method that permits accurate delineation of the terminals of medial lemniscal fibers was used to determine whether thalamic neurons projecting to motor cortex in the cat are in a position to be contacted by such terminals. Thalamic neurons in the VL nucleus were retrogradely labeled by injections of fluorogold placed in the cytoarchitectonically defined area 4, while lemniscal axons and their terminal boutons were anterogradely labeled, in a Golgi-like manner, from injections of Fast Blue placed under physiological control in different parts of the contralateral dorsal column

The occurrence and distribution of monoamine-(MA) containing neurons and fibres in the brain of Carassius was investigated by formaldehyde-induced fluorescence (FIF) histochemistry (Falck-Hillarp technique). Many brightly green-fluorescent nerve cell perikarya were found in the nucleus dorsolateralis and ventromedialis, in the nucleus posterioris periventricularis, in the nucleus recessus lateralis and posterioris. They also occurred in the mesencephalic nucleus lateralis valvulae, in the metencephalic nucleus gustatorius secundus and near the ventricular borders of the facial and vagal lobes

Clinicoanatomical observations on a patient with partial interhemispheric disconnection associated with complete ischaemic destruction of the splenium and of the posterior part of the body of the corpus callosum are presented. Neuropathological examination of the areas containing degenerated white matter indicated that the lesions affected the transcallosal fibres that link the cortex of the occipital lobes and the superior parietal lobules (SPL). The white matter situated in the temporal lobes was intact. This suggests that in man, and contrary to what has been described in the monkey, the ca

The development of the dentate area and the hippocampal mossy fiber system of the rat has been investigated at the light microscopic level by using fluorescent tracing, Nissl, and Timm's histochemical methods. Although the cytoarchitectonic development of the dentate granular layer is mainly a postnatal phenomenon, the initial events take place before birth. The aggregation and maturation of the cells in the granular layer proceed in a graded fashion from the lateral to the medial and from the superficial to the deep aspects of the layer. The earliest-formed granule cells are probably derived

Adult rats, exposed to ethanol in utero exhibit aberrant mossy fiber-like Timm staining in the distal infrapyramidal region of the hippocampus at midtemporal levels. The present study utilized the anterograde transport of HRP to verify that the aberrant pattern of Timm staining represented a terminal field of the dentate granule cells. One or more HRP-labeled mossy fiber bundles were shown to cross to the infrapyramidal side of the pyramidal cell layer primarily, but not exclusively, at the same septotemporal level where the aberrant terminal field was located.

The motoneurons which innervate the mormyrid electric organ are driven by a descending volley from the medullary relay nucleus. This nucleus does not initiate the electric organ discharge (EOD) but is driven in an obligatory manner by another center, a command nucleus. One goal of the present study was to identify this command nucleus anatomically. A second goal was to determine the pathways by which corollary discharges of the EOD motor command exert their effects on sensory input to the electroreceptive lateral line lobe. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected into the medullary relay nuc

Discrete lesions interrupting the fiber tracts that connect the pontine center for conjugate horizontal gaze and the ipsilateral abducens nucleus create the syndrome of Lutz's posterior internuclear ophthalmoplegia. In this syndrome the lateral rectus on the side of the lesion fails to abduct the eye normally on attempted horizontal gaze to the same side. Adduction of the contralateral eye is normal. This syndrome may be differentiated from the more common abducens nerve palsy by noting the orthotropic position of the eyes in primary position, the absence of primary and secondary deviations wi

Anterograde labelling with 3H-leucine was used to study the course and termination of striatofugal fibers in the monkey. Following injection of the isotope in the most medial part of the head and the body of the caudate nucleus fibers were traced along the ventrolateral part of the internal capsule and within the medial part of the comb bundle before penetrating the rostromedial pole of the substantia nigra (SN). Fiber endings were found along the dorsomedial edge of both divisions of the pallidum and in approximately the medial third of the SN over the whole length of this structure. Injectio

Corticocortical afferents to both cortical walls of the cat middle suprasylvian sulcus (MSs area) were investigated by means of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). the visual cortex (V-I and V-II) projects to the medial wall of the MSs, the projection from V-II being heavier. The auditory cortex (A-I, A-II,. and Ep), including cortical walls of the dorsal part of the anterior and posterior ectosylvian sulci, sends fibers to the lateral wall of the MSs. Connections from the first auditory area (A-I) are heavier than from the second (A-II). In the rostral part of the MSs

The application of horseradish peroxidase to the central cut end of the carotid sinus nerve of the cat produced retrograde labeling of neurons in the ipsilateral medulla in the region of the nucleus ambiguus at anterior-posterior coordinates -8 to -10.5. These data coupled with previous electrophysiological observations suggest that the nucleus ambiguus may be the origin of an efferent inhibitory pathway to the carotid body.

In nine patients with trigeminal neuralgia excision of the trigeminal tract was performed instead of tractotomy. In eight of the patients neuralgia was cured. One female patient died due to occlusion of the middle cerebral artery. Electron microscopy disclosed first of all changes in the myelin sheaths. The majority of the changes were non-specific. Only degenerative hypermyelinization was considered to be characteristic for trigeminal neuralgia.

Analysis of smooth pursuit by infrared oculography showed normal horizontal smooth eye movement gain in a patient with a unilateral parietooccipital hematoma that involved the internal sagittal stratum and the adjacent tapetum and visual radiation. Normal pursuit toward the lesion is attributed to commissural transfer of visual information from the normal cerebral hemisphere to the intact extrastriate cortex of the visually deprived hemisphere. This pathophysiological correlation indicates that the occiptiomesencephalic projections of the internal sagittal stratum and the peristriate interhemi
