[Oral health hygiene education programme for nursing personnel to improve oral health of residents in long-term care facilities 2010 in Frankfurt/Main, Germany].

BACKGROUND: Many studies have shown the urgent need for improving oral health hygiene in nursing home residents. Deficits in the knowledge of the personnel about dental and oral hygiene are often cited as one of the causes. Therefore, an oral health education programme was provided to the personnel of 20 nursing homes in Frankfurt/Main. Here the results of the assessment of the impact of the education programme on knowledge and attitudes of the personnel as well as on oral health of the residents are presented. METHODS: In May/June 2010, 471 nurses in 20 nursing homes in the Frankfurt/Main, G

What matters most and for whom? A cross-sectional study exploring goals of health professionals in German neonatal intensive care units.

OBJECTIVES: Quality of care largely depends on successful teamwork, which in turn needs effective communication between health professionals. To communicate successfully in a team, health professionals need to strive for the same goals. However, it has been left largely unaddressed which goals professionals consider to be important. In this study, we aim to identify these goals and analyse whether differences between (1) personal and organisational goals, (2) different professions and (3) hierarchical levels exist in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). DESIGN: Goals were identified based o

The experiences of family planning health professionals providing care to incarcerated patients: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Although Canada completely decriminalized abortion in 1988, barriers persist, and people experiencing incarceration may face additional challenges. Family planning health professionals (FPHP) in the community may provide care to incarcerated people. This study is the first to examine their experiences and needs. METHODS: We used a community-based approach to this qualitative study and conducted interviews and focus groups with FPHP across Canada from multiple disciplines. Experts on the research team with lived experience of incarceration enhanced relevance of research questions a

Effectiveness of Nurse-Led Case Management in Community Settings Among Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Integrated, people-centred care requires continuity and coordination across services, and nurses increasingly contribute to case management; however, evidence on its effectiveness for older adults living at home remains limited. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led case management for community-dwelling older adults compared with usual care. METHODS: PubMed, CINAHL, Embase and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from inception to 13 August 2025, for randomised controlled trials comparing nurse-led case management wi

Drug adherence and symptom management in older people.

There are a number factors that need to be considered when managing frail older people with multiple health problems. Inappropriate polypharmacy and poor adherence, particularly in older adults, is associated with negative health outcomes. In addition to assessing the patient's current symptoms and health status, it is therefore important to consider which medications patients are prescribed, whether they are appropriate and whether they are being taken as prescribed. This case study aims to increase awareness of poor adherence to medication in the older adult population.

"We should be experts, but we're not": Sexual counselling at the antenatal care clinic.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies show that nurses don't meet patients' needs in addressing issues around sexuality and sexual health. However, little attention has been paid to midwives' views on sexual counselling. This study explores midwives' views and experiences on sexual counselling during antenatal care. STUDY DESIGN: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine midwives at seven different antenatal care clinics in southern Sweden. The interviews were analysed with qualitative content analysis, and script theory was used as a theoretical perspective. RESULTS: The result showed that t

The role of community screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip at the 8-month baby check.

BACKGROUND: Screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) after the neonatal period is controversial. Due to recent changes in the screening policy in England & Wales, routine clinical screening for DDH at the 8-month baby check is no longer recommended. RESULTS: This paper looks at the effectiveness of screening for DDH by health visitors in the Flintshire area. A total of 525 8-month baby checks were performed in our area in 2007. Thirty babies were referred to their general practitioner of which six were referred on to a specialist children's orthopaedic surgeon. None of these req

Changing indwelling urinary catheters using bladder infill.

The commonest method used in changing indwelling urinary catheters, either urethral or supra-pubic, is to remove the catheter and proceed to re-catheterise. When removing the catheter with patients using drainage bags on continual drainage, the urinary bladder becomes empty of urine. This may then leave the practitioner following re-catheterisation and often with no immediate drainage of urine, if the catheter has been safely inserted. A method which the author has used for many years and has experienced no problems is re-catheterisation using bladder infill. This article explains what is mean

Managing leg and foot ulcers: the role of Kerraboot.

Foot and leg ulcers are chronic wounds characterized by slow or non-healing breakdown of epidermal and dermal tissue on the foot or below the knee. The prevalence is high and ulcers are a significant drain on the NHS in terms of nursing time and cost of dressings, and are incredibly burdensome to the individual patient. This article reviews the evidence for a new wound management system, Kerraboot, designed for the management of leg and foot ulcers. It is a boot-shaped dressing that completely surrounds the ulcer, creating an optimum healing environment. In clinical investigations, Keraboot of

Post-discharge care planning and rehabilitation of the elderly surgical patient.

Successful discharge planning, home care, and rehabilitation for surgical patients can be very satisfying. However, everyone involved should be aware that it can also be frustrating when, despite careful plans and organization, everything falls apart, often because the patient's disease course is different from that expected or the patient or family are not satisfied with the services. There are multiple other reasons for plans to fail, but with experience the failures should become less frequent. All too often in life we take success for granted and weigh failures twice as much. The danger of

Tuberculosis- and Diabetes Mellitus-Associated Knowledge, Stigma, and Health-Seeking Behaviour in Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis [TB] and diabetes mellitus (DM) remain major public health concerns worldwide. TB negatively affects an individual's glucose tolerance, increasing the risk of developing DM. Similarly, DM reduces the host's ability to fight TB infection and increases the likelihood of developing TB and poor response to TB medication. This study analysed stigma and health-seeking behaviour in a sub-district of Accra Metropolis. METHODS: We used a mixed-methods research approach involving a cross-sectional survey and in-depth interviews to explore community knowledge, stigma, and heal

[Loneliness as a health issue: a new challenge for healthcare systems and nursing].

. Loneliness as a health issue: a new challenge for healthcare systems and nursing. Loneliness has long been considered mainly a psychological or social condition. However, growing scientific evidence has identified loneliness as a major health determinant associated with poorer clinical outcomes, increased healthcare utilization, reduced quality of life, and higher mortality. Demographic ageing, weakening social networks, chronic diseases, socioeconomic vulnerability, and the impact of the covid-19 pandemic have contributed to making loneliness a widespread public health issue affecting all a
