Psychological considerations in gastrointestinal nursing.

Body image changes and psychological adaptation are often associated with patients who have gastrointestinal disease due to the potential alteration to physical appearance through the very nature of the disease process or treatment. This article describes some of the psychological issues highlighted by patients with gastrointestinal disease, including loss of bowel control, withdrawal and concealment. It highlights altered image difficulties and adaptation through the patients' journey and treatment with illustrations from patients' narratives. In doing so, it explores the nurse's role and str

What we need to know about uncertainty in illness among people with primary malignant brain tumours: A mixed-methods systematic review.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To identify the characteristics of uncertainty in illness (UI) among people with primary malignant brain tumours (PMBT). BACKGROUND: High recurrence rates and complex symptoms cause uncertainty in people with PMBT. Given the characteristics of PMBT, reviewing UI among people with PMBT will benefit future research and clinical intervention development. DESIGN: A mixed-methods systematic review. METHODS: We performed a mixed-methods systematic review (PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus and Cochrane Library), including studies on UI among people with PMBT, searched f

Learning partnership--the experience of peer tutoring among nursing students: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Peer tutoring involves students helping each other to learn. It places teaching and learning commitments and responsibilities on students. Considerable evidence supports the positive effects of peer tutoring, including cognitive gains, improved communication, self-confidence, and social support among students. Peer tutors are also said to better understand the learning problems of fellow peer learners than teachers do. OBJECTIVE: This study intended to facilitate the development of 'cooperative learning' among nursing students through a peer-tutoring scheme. STUDY METHOD: Undergr

Using the connecting process to meet family caregiver needs.

Individuals who engage in caregiving responsibilities for dependent family members in the home setting face challenges that are little understood by others outside the circle of care. Because a large portion of energy is devoted to caregiving tasks, caregivers potentially fail to devote attention to meeting their own needs. The purpose of this study was to develop a beginning substantive theory describing the needs perceived by caregivers and the processes by which these caregivers are able to get their individual needs met. Grounded theory methodology was used to facilitate the identification

The importance of moral sensitivity when including persons with dementia in qualitative research.

The aim of this article is to show the importance of moral sensitivity when including persons with dementia in research. The article presents and discusses ethical challenges encountered when a total of 15 persons with dementia from two nursing homes and seven proxies were included in a qualitative study. The examples show that the ethical challenges may be unpredictable. As researchers, you participate with the informants in their daily life and in the interviews, and it is not possible to plan all that may happen during the research. Validation of a Barriers Scale for Local Anesthesia in Arterial Blood Sampling.

BACKGROUND: Arterial blood gas (ABG) sampling is a common and painful procedure. Despite strong evidence supporting the use of local anesthesia to reduce pain, its use in clinical practice remains limited. AIM: To develop and validate a scale assessing nurses' perceived barriers to the use of infiltrated local anesthesia prior to ABG sampling. DESIGN: Instrument development and psychometric validation study. METHODS: A two-stage design was conducted between October 2024 and June 2025. In Stage 1, items were generated from a literature review and refined through a four-round Delphi process w

Birthweight as a risk factor for breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: The mammary gland is largely undifferentiated before birth and may be particularly susceptible to intrauterine influences that could increase the risk of cancer through acceleration of cell proliferation or other pregnancy-related processes. Studies of migrant populations, animal data, and limited epidemiological evidence suggest that breast cancer may originate in utero. In a nested case-control study we assessed whether birthweight and other perinatal factors are associated with risk of breast cancer. METHODS: This case-control study was nested within the cohorts of the two Nurs

Nurse-Led Evidence-Based Quality Improvement Programme to Reduce Urinary Leakage in Intensive Care Unit Patients with Urinary catheters: A Pre-Post Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Indwelling urinary catheters are commonly used in intensive care units. Urinary leakage around catheters may occur in critically ill patients because of mechanical ventilation, sedation and analgesia, constipation, increased intra abdominal pressure, bladder spasm, and altered consciousness. Nurses require adequate knowledge and skills to prevent and manage urinary leakage. AIM: This study aimed to reduce urinary leakage among ICU patients by developing and implementing a nurse led, evidence based Urinary Leakage Bundle. METHODS: The Evidence-based Continuous Quality Improvement

Associations of maternal fatigue and perceived nurse-parent support with cyberchondria dimensions among mothers of hospitalized children aged 0-6 years: a path analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cyberchondria has become increasingly prominent among mothers experiencing heightened uncertainty, stress, and caregiving burden during pediatric hospitalization, highlighting the critical role of professional nurse-parent support and holistic nursing care in managing this process. AIM: To examine associations of maternal fatigue and perceived nurse-parent support with five dimensions of cyberchondria-compulsion, distress, excessiveness, reassurance, and mistrust of medical professionals among mothers of hospitalized children aged 0-6 years using structural equation modeling. Development of Entrustable Professional Activities for Adult Intensive Care.

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, intensive care nurses are primarily trained through lato sensu postgraduate programmes, which are mostly theoretical and vary widely in duration, workload, modality and area of subspecialization. These factors raise concerns about the quality of education and development of crucial professional competencies. Although competencies required for intensive care nurses have been defined, they are often broad, extensive and difficult to integrate into training programmes. Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) were introduced to implement competency-based education in clin
