Air quality status in Greater Thessaloniki Area and the emission reductions needed for attaining the EU air quality legislation.

This paper aims at imprinting the urban air quality status and assessing the impact of various emission reduction scenarios on the photochemical and particulate matter air pollution levels in the Greater Thessaloniki Area, Greece. In particular, it is investigated under which conditions compliance with the EU air quality legislation can be achieved. For this purpose, the Ozone Fine Structure model is applied for a full calendar period (reference year 2002), as well as for specific scenarios, corresponding to predefined emission reductions for 2010. The model results for photochemical and parti…

Use of constant wavelength synchronous spectrofluorimetry for identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in air particulate samples.

We have developed a simple, rapid, inexpensive method for the identification of fluoranthene (Flan), benz(a)anthracene (BaA), benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), benzo(k)fluoranthene (BkF), pyrene (Pyr), benz(ghi)perylene (BghiP) in suspended particulate matter in an urban environment of Delhi. Suspended particulate matter samples of 24h duration were collected on glass fiber filter papers. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were extracted from the filter papers using dichloromethane (DCM) and hexane with ultrasonication method. Comparison of the characteristic emission of spectra of PAHs with standard…

Air pollution and cardiovascular disease: a statement for healthcare professionals from the Expert Panel on Population and Prevention Science of the American Heart Association.

Air pollution is a heterogeneous, complex mixture of gases, liquids, and particulate matter. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated a consistent increased risk for cardiovascular events in relation to both short- and long-term exposure to present-day concentrations of ambient particulate matter. Several plausible mechanistic pathways have been described, including enhanced coagulation/thrombosis, a propensity for arrhythmias, acute arterial vasoconstriction, systemic inflammatory responses, and the chronic promotion of atherosclerosis. The purpose of this statement is to provide healthcare …

Epidermal growth factor receptor dysregulation and climate change: insights into pollution-promoted lung cancer.

The global increase of fine particulate matter pollution, intensified by anthropogenic activity, has been increasingly implicated in lung cancer risk, particularly among never-smokers. We discuss how air pollution contributes to respiratory diseases through interactions with the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signalling pathway. In particular, recent evidence has shown that fine particulate matter promotes lung cancer in cells harbouring a pre-existing EGFR mutation. As such, we also outline how oncogenic mutations in histologically normal tissue may predispose cells to malignant tran…

Toward the application of metallothionein inducers as a method of prevention of air pollutant-dependent lung injury.

Although Sustainable Development Goal 3.9 states the global goal of reducing air pollution-related death and disease, innovative ways to reduce air pollution-related deaths and diseases have not yet been established. To address this issue, we have established animal models using urban air dust containing the major air pollutants, suspended particulate matter (PM10) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and are promoting research to discover protective factors in the respiratory tract where air pollutants first reach the human body. Therefore, in this Perspective manuscript, we provide an overvi…

Most heal … ving in South Carolina (SC) census tracts from 2005 to 2014. Results show that coarse particulates (particulate matter <10 μm and >2.5 μm: PM10-2.5) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) may contribute to asthma ED visits across years, but are particularly implicated in the highest-burden fall asthma season. Fine particulate matter (<2.5 μm: PM2.5) is only associated in the low …

Short-term field research on air pollution within the boundaries of the large city in the Baltic region.

Air quality in urban and suburban areas is strongly affected by the level of local urbanization, climatic conditions and industrial activity. Monitoring the main air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and particulate matter may help control the most polluted areas of the site and take measures to reduce pollution. Uncontrolled emissions from other chemical pollutants, including volatile organic compounds and odorous contamination sources like ammonia, may cause both a chronic human disease and damage to flora and fauna. The conducted field research is aimed at determining air …

Exposure to Ambient Fine Particulate Air Pollution in Utero as a Risk Factor for Child Stunting in Bangladesh.

Pregnant mothers in Bangladesh are exposed to very high and worsening levels of ambient air pollution. Maternal exposure to fine particulate matter has been associated with low birth weight at much lower levels of exposure, leading us to suspect the potentially large effects of air pollution on stunting in children in Bangladesh. We estimate the relationship between exposure to air pollution in utero and child stunting by pooling outcome data from four waves of the nationally representative Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey conducted between 2004 and 2014, and calculating children's exp…

A systematic review of arterial stiffness, wave reflection and air pollution.

Arterial stiffening is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Whether exposure to relatively high levels of air pollution is associated with arterial stiffening is unclear. We aimed to assess the association between exposure to major air pollutants and arterial stiffening. PubMed, SCOPUS and Web of Science databases (through 31 January 2017) were searched using a combination of terms related to exposure to gaseous [nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur dioxide (SO2)] or particulate matter pollutants (PM2.5, PM10 and PM10-2.5), arterial stiffness (pulse wave velocity…

Exposure to tobacco smoke before and after a partial smoking ban in prison: indoor air quality measures.

UNLABELLED: Although exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is reportedly high in prison, few studies have measured this in the prison environment, and none have done so in Europe. We measured two indicators of SHS exposure (particulate matter PM10 and nicotine) in fixed locations before (2009) and after (2010) introduction of a partial smoking ban in a Swiss prison. Access to smoking cessation support was available to detainees throughout the study. OBJECTIVES: To measure SHS before and after the introduction of a partial smoking ban. METHODS: Assessment of particulate matter PM10 (suspended mi…

Chlorine Radical Cycling Amplifies Photolytic NOx Release.

The atmospheric chlorine radical (Cl•) is a highly reactive oxidant. However, its formation on particulate matter (PM) surfaces and its role in nitrogen chemistry remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the Cl• chemistry on photoactive PM and evaluated its potential influence on atmospheric nitrogen cycling. Experimental evidence confirms that the chloride ion (Cl-) on the photoactive surface undergoes oxidation by photogenerated hole (h+) to form Cl•, which subsequently accelerates nitrite intermediate conversion to gaseous nitrogen oxides (NOx). Under the model experimental…

Positive Feedback between Partitioning of Carbonyl Compounds and Particulate Sulfur Formation during Haze Episodes.

Carbonyl compounds are important precursors of aqueous aerosols in the atmosphere, while their gas-particle partitioning behaviors and roles in particulate sulfur formation are poorly understood. In this study, we investigate the partitioning of five carbonyl compounds (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, glyoxal, and methylglyoxal) during haze episodes in Beijing, China. On haze days, the values of field-derived effective Henry's law coefficients (KHf) on aerosols for these carbonyl compounds are 106-108 M atm-1, which are significantly higher (102-104 times) than those in pure water. Sulfat

High-efficiency carbon-coated steel wool filter for controlling cooking-induced oil smoke.

Cooking oil smoke (COS) contains many harmful substances, such as particulate matter, formaldehyde, and phenyl esters. Currently, commercial COS treatment equipment is expensive and requires a large space. Furthermore, a large amount of agricultural waste is generated and is mainly burned onsite, producing large amounts of greenhouse gases and air pollutants. This waste could be reused as a precursor for biochar and activated carbon. Therefore, this research used saccharification and catalytic hydrothermal carbonization to process rice straw and produce compact carbon-based filters (steel wool…

Proteomic characteristics and identification of PM2.5-induced differentially expressed proteins in hepatocytes and c-Myc silenced hepatocytes.

Proteomics and bioinformatics were applied to explore PM2.5-induced differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in hepatocytes (L02 cells) and c-Myc-silenced hepatocytes. L02 cells and c-Myc-silenced hepatocytes were treated with PM2.5 for 24 h. Fifty-two DEPs were screened in L02 hepatocytes, of which 28 were upregulated and 24 were downregulated. Forty-one DEPs were screened in the c-Myc-silenced hepatocytes, of which 31 were upregulated and 10 were downregulated. GO analysis showed that DEPs in L02 cells were mainly concentrated in the cytosol and were involved in biological processes such as

The health effects of ultrafine particles.

Ultrafine particles (PM0.1), which are present in the air in large numbers, pose a health risk. They generally enter the body through the lungs but translocate to essentially all organs. Compared to fine particles (PM2.5), they cause more pulmonary inflammation and are retained longer in the lung. Their toxicity is increased with smaller size, larger surface area, adsorbed surface material, and the physical characteristics of the particles. Exposure to PM0.1 induces cough and worsens asthma. Metal fume fever is a systemic disease of lung inflammation most likely caused by PM0.1. The disease is

[Ultrafine particles and effects on the body: review of the literature].

The International laws and the technology developments led to a situation where the current levels of environmental pollution are below those that existed at the beginning of the century: however, these pollution levels produce harmful effects to health linked to an increase in morbidity and mortality. Over the years the pollution has changed: following the transformation of heating, motor innovation and emissions reducing, has been a reduction in air concentration of some conventional pollutants (sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, benzene), while there wasn't a significant reduction of particul
