Effects of adaptation on numerosity decoding in the human brain.

Psychophysical studies have shown that numerosity is a sensory attribute susceptible to adaptation. Neuroimaging studies have reported that, at least for relatively low numbers, numerosity can be accurately discriminated in the intra-parietal sulcus. Here we developed a novel rapid adaptation paradigm where adapting and test stimuli are separated by pauses sufficient to dissociate their BOLD activity. We used multivariate pattern recognition to classify brain activity evoked by non-symbolic numbers over a wide range (20-80), both before and after psychophysical adaptation to the highest numero

Diagnostic Prediction for Social Anxiety Disorder via Multivariate Pattern Analysis of the Regional Homogeneity.

Although decades of efforts have been spent studying the pathogenesis of social anxiety disorder (SAD), there are still no objective biological markers that could be reliably used to identify individuals with SAD. Studies using multivariate pattern analysis have shown the potential value in clinically diagnosing psychiatric disorders with neuroimaging data. We therefore examined the diagnostic potential of regional homogeneity (ReHo) underlying neural correlates of SAD using support vector machine (SVM), which has never been studied. Forty SAD patients and pairwise matched healthy controls wer

Multivariate classification of structural MRI data detects chronic low back pain.

Chronic low back pain (cLBP) has a tremendous personal and socioeconomic impact, yet the underlying pathology remains a mystery in the majority of cases. An objective measure of this condition, that augments self-report of pain, could have profound implications for diagnostic characterization and therapeutic development. Contemporary research indicates that cLBP is associated with abnormal brain structure and function. Multivariate analyses have shown potential to detect a number of neurological diseases based on structural neuroimaging. Therefore, we aimed to empirically evaluate such an appr

Automated diagnosis of oral cancer using higher order spectra features and local binary pattern: a comparative study.

In the field of quantitative microscopy, textural information plays a significant role very often in tissue characterization and diagnosis, in addition to morphology and intensity. The objective of this work is to improve the classification accuracy based on textural features for the development of a computer assisted screening of oral sub-mucous fibrosis (OSF). In fact, the approach introduced is used to grade the histopathological tissue sections into normal, OSF without dysplasia (OSFWD) and OSF with dysplasia (OSFD), which would help the oral onco-pathologists to screen the subjects rapidl

An in vitro mechanical and histological study of acute stretching on rabbit tibial nerve.

Peripheral nerves are often mechanically stretched in association with trauma to extremities, resulting in varying degrees of impairment of nerve function. However, little is known about the biomechanical properties of peripheral nerves and limits of stretching that the nerve may undergo before structural changes occur. Also, the injury pattern of nerves under stretching is poorly understood. In the present study, fresh rabbit tibial nerves (n = 18) were harvested. Nine nerves were stretched to failure in an INSTRON materials testing machine at a rate of 1 cm/min (strain rate of 0.5%/s). Load-

Progressive Tooth Wear Against Resin-Based Restorative Composites.

PURPOSE: The composition and properties of resin-based composite materials could affect tooth wear and lead to clinical problems. Therefore, the study objective was to characterize human tooth wear behavior against a bulk-fill restorative (BF) compared to a conventional resin composite (RC) and a CAD/CAM resin nano ceramic (RN). METHODS: Square-shaped specimens of each material were prepared and sub-divided according to the number of testing cycles (n=8): 100,000, 250,000, and 500,000 cycles. An occlusal wear test was performed using a chewing machine with 49 N, 2 Hz, in 37°C distilled water.

Longitudinal trajectories of urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio and risk of proteinuria among Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes: a single-center retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) is a key marker for monitoring proteinuria progression in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, UACR trajectory patterns and their association with proteinuria risk remain underexplored. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 3,101 T2DM patients (baseline UACR <30 mg/g) with regular follow-up from March 2018 to October 2024 at the Ningbo Metabolic Management Center (MMC) subcenter. Clinical data were obtained from electronic medical records. Group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) identified UACR trajectory patterns. Partial

EEG monitoring in the operating room: current uses and perspectives - a narrative review.

CONTEXT AND IMPORTANCE: With over 300 million surgeries performed under general anaesthesia annually, optimising perioperative brain health has become a critical public health priority. Electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring, initially conceived to prevent awareness during anaesthesia, is now emerging as a tool for assessing cognitive vulnerability and predicting neurocognitive outcomes. OBJECTIVES: This narrative review synthesises the evolution of intraoperative EEG monitoring across three conceptual stages: from a depth-of-anaesthesia measure to a tool for optimising anaesthetic exposure, a

Predicting sub-clinical risk of complex PTSD in adolescents using multi-informant ecological data: A machine learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) is a significant mental health concern in adolescents, however traditional diagnostic tools often fail to capture early risk patterns. Adolescence is a unique developmental window marked by neurobiological remodeling and heightened interpersonal sensitivity. This study aims to move beyond binary clinical diagnosis toward a subclinical prevention framework by predicting continuous CPTSD symptom severity using multidimensional ecological data. METHODS: The data were collected from a triad of 4177 Chinese adolescents and their parents. A

Effect of multimodal HMI on mental workload and driving safety in smart cockpits.

Multimodal human-machine interaction (HMI) is increasingly implemented in smart cockpit systems, yet empirical evidence on how specific modality configurations jointly shape driver workload and performance remains limited. From a neuroergonomic perspective, this study examined how variations in combinations of visual layout, auditory feedback, and haptic interaction were associated with driver workload regulation and vehicle-control performance in a controlled driving simulation. Twenty-nine licensed drivers performed secondary interaction tasks under systematically varied multimodal configura

Semantic memory navigation in mild cognitive impairment: Automated markers with neural and biofluid correlates.

Verbal fluency tasks are ubiquitous in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) screenings. Yet, their assessment is traditionally limited to valid response counts. This subjective approach constrains analysis to univariate methods and overlooks which semantic memory dimensions are affected, introducing human bias while limiting informativeness. We tackled these gaps with a novel automated framework. Ninety-six participants (53 with MCI, 43 cognitively unimpaired individuals) performed phonemic and semantic fluency tasks alongside standard cognitive tests. Word properties (e.g., frequency, granularity,

Stable Mechanoreceptive Somatotopy in Chronic Low Back Pain: Is Cortical Map Reorganization a Myth?

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) has been linked to maladaptive cortical plasticity in sensorimotor regions, which may contribute to pain persistence through less distinct ("smudged") somatotopic maps of afferent input from the back. However, empirical support for such functional reorganization, especially in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), is limited. To delineate precise sensory representations of the back in humans and test for altered somatotopic processing in CLBP, we utilized an MR-compatible pneumatic vibration device and applied frequency-specific vibrotactile stimuli at nine thorac

Unsupervised learning reveals rapid gait adaptation after leg loss and regrowth in spiders.

Many invertebrates voluntarily lose (autotomize) limbs during antagonistic encounters, and some regenerate functional replacements. Because limb loss can have severe consequences on individual fitness, it is likely subject to significant selective pressures, making this an excellent phenomenon with which to investigate biomechanical robustness. Spiders frequently autotomize one or more legs. We investigated the time course of locomotor recovery after leg loss and regeneration in juvenile tarantulas (Arachnida: Araneae) naive to autotomy. We recorded high-speed video of spiders running with all

Aberrant migration features in primary skin fibroblasts of Huntington's disease patients hold potential for unraveling disease progression using an image based machine learning tool.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder with considerable heterogeneity in clinical manifestations. While CAG repeat length is a known predictor of disease severity, this heterogeneity suggests the involvement of additional genetic and environmental factors. Previously we revealed that HD primary fibroblasts exhibit unique features, including distinct nuclear morphology and perturbed actin cap, resembling characteristics seen in Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS). This study establishes a link between actin cap deficiency and cell motility in HD, which correl

Does the physiological success of CPAP titration predict clinical success?

Patients commencing continuous positive airway pressure therapy (CPAP) undergo overnight airway pressure titration in sleep centres to optimize breathing and sleep patterns. We tested the hypothesis that data from formal scoring of the sleep and breathing patterns observed at the best achievable pressure during titration can predict CPAP use and effectiveness, as our clinical experience suggested otherwise. The relationship between CPAP titration scores (apnoea/hypopnoea frequency, arousal frequency and sleep staging) and subsequent CPAP use was examined in 150 sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome

Identification of hub gene and immune infiltration in Lyme disease revealed by weighted gene co-expression network analysis and machine learning.

INTRODUCTION: Lyme disease (LD), caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb), is a multisystem disorder with early symptoms such as erythema migrans and late manifestations including arthritis and neuroborreliosis. The molecular mechanisms driving tissue damage and inflammatory dysregulation in LD remain incompletely characterized. Given the central role of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in orchestrating immune responses, we aimed to identify optimal feature genes (OFGs) within PBMCs associated with LD pathogenesis and delineate their immune infiltration patterns using integ
