Clinical and neuroimaging correlates of cognition in HIV.

This study investigated whether HIV-positive participants, stable on combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), showed cognitive impairments relative to HIV-negative controls; and whether clinical and neuroimaging factors correlated with cognitive function in the HIV-positive participants. One hundred and twenty-six white men who have sex with men, of whom 78 were HIV-positive and stable on cART and 48 were HIV negative, were recruited to this cross-sectional study. The median age of HIV-positive participants in this study was 47. They underwent clinical and neuropsychological evaluation and magn

Altered plasma levels of arginine metabolites in depression.

L-Arginine pathway metabolites appear to play differential roles in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD). Studies have revealed an antidepressant and anxiolytic effect of agmatine and putrescine. Possible mechanisms of these effects include inhibition of nitric oxide synthase and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors. The present study sought to determine whether MDD is associated with altered levels of arginine metabolites and whether these metabolites are associated with depression, anxiety and stress severity. Seventy seven MDD patients 21-65 years of age with a minimum score of 18

The influence of oxonate-induced hyperuricemia and allopurinol on behavioral reactions of random-bred mice.

BACKGROUND: Purine metabolism specificity, namely the high level of uric acid in the blood, is considered to be significant in the appearance of intellectually-developed primates, as well as in later periods of human development, for personal activity and achievements and even for the formation of genius. Nowadays hyperuricemia is mostly associated with the pathogenesis of hypertension and metabolic syndrome. Its influence on the central nervous system is predominantly set aside. METHODS: The behavioral reactions of random-bred mice with uricase inhibition due to potassium oxonate or xanthine

Combined cognitive bias modification treatment for social anxiety disorder: a pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive Bias Modification (CBM) is a promising treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). However, previous randomized trials have not systematically examined the combination of CBM for attention (CBM-A) and interpretation (CBM-I) or the credibility and acceptability of these protocols. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial (N = 32) to examine the efficacy of a CBM treatment called Attention and Interpretation Modification (AIM) for SAD. AIM comprised eight, twice weekly computer sessions with no therapist contact. During AIM, participants (

Vulvar cicatricial pemphigoid of childhood.

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterised by widespread pain, and cognitive difficulties represent one of the most common symptoms of FM. However, subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) may not necessarily indicate significant abnormalities in objective cognitive performances, and there is limited research investigating the relationship between these two aspects. This study thus aims to analyse the differences between SCC and objective cognitive performance in FM patients and to explore their associations. METHODS: A total of 32 FM female patients (age: 50.91±7.06; yea

To what extent does the anxiety scale of the Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire (4DSQ) detect specific types of anxiety disorder in primary care? A psychometric study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety scales may help primary care physicians to detect specific anxiety disorders among the many emotionally distressed patients presenting in primary care. The anxiety scale of the Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire (4DSQ) consists of an admixture of symptoms of specific anxiety disorders. The research questions were: (1) Is the anxiety scale unidimensional or multidimensional? (2) To what extent does the anxiety scale detect specific DSM-IV anxiety disorders? (3) Which cut-off points are suitable to rule out or to rule in (which) anxiety disorders? METHODS: We analyzed 5

Deficits in Emotional Perception-Related Motor Cortical Excitability in Individuals With Trait Anxiety: A Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Study.

Abnormal emotional perception may contribute to emotional dysfunction in individuals with anxiety. This study explored the progression of impaired emotional perception with the deepening of anxiety in individuals with nonclinical trait anxiety, by measuring the motor cortical excitability associated with emotional perception. In total, 87 participants were assigned to a high trait anxiety (n = 27), moderate trait anxiety (n = 30), or low trait anxiety (n = 30) group. Transcranial magnetic stimulation was applied to the right primary motor cortex at 150 ms or 300 ms after the onset of positive,

The Effects of Commando Training on Stress, Cognitive Performance, and Group Behavior in Military Personnel: An Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Military personnel are exposed to a high level of operational stress that degrades their psychophysiological and cognitive performance and could impact the mission. Commando training is a unique opportunity to assess psychological, physiological, and cognitive performance in an ecological setting. METHODS: Psychological, physiological, and cognitive performance were evaluated at baseline, and before and after a 1-week commando training course consisting of exercises and night walks. Psychological factors (anxiety, subjective stress), physiological measures (heart rate variability,

The dark side of the white coat: startle potentiation and memory bias in patients with illness-related anxiety and controls - A cross-sectional psychophysiological study.

BACKGROUND: Medical settings can trigger anxiety and thereby impact patients' health outcomes, as illustrated by the white-coat effect (i.e., hypertension in the presence of medical staff). However, the psychological mechanisms and individual differences underlying such nocebo-like responses remain poorly understood. The present study investigated the implicit cognitive and emotional processing of white-coat representations in healthy controls and patients with chronic heart-failure and varying levels of illness-related anxiety (IA). METHOD: Startle eyeblink modulation by pictures of clinical

Associations between mental health disorder symptoms and cardiac function among Royal Canadian Mounted police cadets during the Cadet training program.

Cardiac regulation is a complex process involving interplay between neuroautonomic and neuroendocrine systems. Occupations frequently exposed to potentially psychologically traumatic events (PPTEs; e.g., fire or explosion, natural disaster, sexual assault), such as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), report elevated Posttraumatic Stress Injuries (PTSIs; e.g., Posttraumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD], Major Depressive Disorder [MDD], Generalized Anxiety Disorder [GAD], Social Anxiety Disorder [SAD], Alcohol Use Disorder [AUD]). Neurohormonal pathway dysfunction is associated with mental healt

No general pathological significance of aphantasia: An evaluation based on criteria for mental disorders.

As awareness of the phenomenon of aphantasia (= lack of voluntary imagery) has increased in recent years, many psychotherapists ponder its clinical implications. The present study investigates whether aphantasia meets the criteria for mental disorders, i.e. statistical rarity, impairment in activities of daily living, violation of social norms and inappropriate behavior and personal distress. Prevalence of aphantasia was determined meta-analytically based on 3,543 participants. An international sample of 156 participants with aphantasia (58.3% male; Mage  = 35.23) and 131 controls (65.6% male;

The effect of intranasally administered oxytocin on observed social behavior in social anxiety disorder.

Research has shown that patients with a social anxiety disorder (SAD) show social performance deficits. These deficits are a maintaining factor in SAD, as mending social behavior improves interpersonal judgments and reduces social anxiety. Thus finding ways to enhance social behavior is evidently of importance in the treatment of SAD. This double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated the effect of an intranasal administration of the hormone oxytocin (24 IU) on social behavior and anxious appearance in SAD patients (N = 40) and healthy controls (N = 39). Forty minutes after oxytocin admi

High frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment for major depression: Dissociated effects on psychopathology and neurocognition.

OBJECTIVES: This open-label pilot study explored the effects of a course of accelerated high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (HF-rTMS) on two neurocognitive domains (decision-making and impulse control) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: Participants with MDD and a treatment resistant major depressive episode (n=24) underwent twice-daily HF-rTMS targeted at the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC) over two weeks. Psychopathology was assessed by clinician-administered and self-reported measures of depression and anxiety; decision-making wa

Subtypes of paranoia in a nonclinical sample.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has proposed that there may be subtypes of paranoia with different patterns of performance on symptom and clinical measures. However, there has been little empirical examination of whether distinct subtypes actually exist. Recent research has suggested that paranoia can be found in normal individuals and exists on a continuum. Thus, it is possible that evidence for subtypes of paranoia can be derived from nonclinical samples. METHODS: From a total of 723 participants, we identified 114 college students who showed elevated levels of paranoia as determined by two

Patient tolerability during office cystoscopy and bladder tumor cauterization: a multivariate analysis of risk factors.

OBJECTIVE: Cystoscopy and cauterization performed in the operating room is expensive and exposes patients to anesthesia risks. Patient tolerability during office cystoscopy and cauterization is critical to the office management of bladder cancer (BC) and other urologic diseases. We evaluated the risk factors for pain of flexible cystoscopy in the office-setting with emphasis on a sub-group of BC patients who underwent cauterization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analyses of 110 anonymous patient surveys completed after cystoscopy and/or cauterization. Survey information included age, g

The impact of psychological distress on working memory during COVID-19 by disentangling cognitive deficits from emotional burden.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on public health and human cognitive functioning, with studies highlighting deficits in attention, executive function, and working memory. In this study, we examine the relationship between working memory performance and anxiety, psychosomatic symptoms, and psychological distress-variables known to influence cognitive functioning. Our findings reveal that psychological distress accounted for a significant portion of the variance in visual working memory performance, particularly during the early stages of the disease when distress levels were at

Electromyographic and affective responses of episodic tension-type headache patients and headache-free controls during stressful task performance.

Thirty-four subjects meeting diagnostic criteria for episodic tension-type headache and 42 who rarely experienced headaches participated in two laboratory sessions in which cephalic electromyographic (EMG) activity, electrodermal activity, heart rate, and finger temperature were recorded. Subjects performed relaxation, choice reaction time, psychomotor tracking, voluntary muscle contraction, and cold pressor tasks. Headache subjects showed significantly greater EMG activity than controls during baseline and stressful task performance. During relaxation, both groups reduced EMG activity from ba

Psychological factors associated with Chinese users' adoption of AI-generated health education short videos: a PLS-SEM-ANN-IPMA study.

BACKGROUND: AI-generated health education short videos are becoming an important form of digital health communication. Compared with conventional health education content, these videos require users to evaluate not only the value of health information, but also the credibility of information sources, the trustworthiness of AI-generated content, and their own health-related psychological state. Therefore, it is necessary to further examine the psychological factors that influence users' adoption of AI-generated health information. METHODS: Drawing on the Information Adoption Model, this study
