The recording of personality strengths: An analysis of the impact of positive personality features on the long-term outcome of common mental disorders.

Although personality strengths are assessed frequently in occupational and managerial settings and in children, they have been less used in studies of personality disorder. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of a measure of personality strengths derived from the comprehensive version of the Personality Assessment Schedule (CPAS) (i.e., positive and reinforcing traits) on clinical symptoms and functioning. Eighty-nine patients with anxiety and depression seen at the 30-year follow-up point in a cohort study (Nottingham Study of Neurotic Disorder) were administered the Comprehensive …

Do personality problems improve during psychodynamic supportive-expressive psychotherapy? Secondary outcome results from a randomized controlled trial for psychiatric outpatients with personality disorders.

Studies involving patients with personality disorders (PDs) have not focused on improvement of core aspects of the PD. The authors examined changes in quality of object relations, interpersonal problems, psychological mindedness, and personality traits in a sample of 156 patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.) PD diagnoses being randomized to either manualized or nonmanualized dynamic psychotherapy. Effect sizes adjusted for symptomatic change and reliable change indices were calculated. The authors found that both treatments were equally effective at redu…

Anxiety and depressive disorders and the five-factor model of personality: a higher- and lower-order personality trait investigation in a community sample.

We describe in detail normal personality traits in persons with psychiatrist-ascertained anxiety and depressive disorders in a general population sample. We investigated Revised NEO Personality Inventory traits in 731 community subjects examined by psychiatrists with the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry. All of the lifetime disorders of interest (simple phobia, social phobia, agoraphobia, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD), and dysthymia) were associated with high neuroticism. Social phobia, ago…

How changes in depression severity and borderline personality disorder intensity are linked - a cohort study of depressed patients with and without borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is often complicated by comorbid major depressive episodes (MDEs), which can occur as part of major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder (BD). Such comorbidity is related to worse outcomes in both disorders. Subsyndromal features of BPD are also common in depression. However, studies of simultaneous changes in BPD and depression severities are scarce, and their interactions are poorly understood. AIMS: Studying the associations between changes in BPD and depression symptoms over the course of an MDE. METHODS: In a 6-month naturalisti…

Does personality always matter for health? Examining the moderating effect of age on the personality-health link from life span developmental and aging perspectives.

Extensive evidence has been found for the associations between personality traits and health. However, it remains unknown whether the relationships between personality and health show differential patterns across different life stages. The current research examined how the associations between the levels of and changes in the Big Five personality traits and different types of health outcomes (self-rated, physical, and physiological health outcomes) differ across ages over the life span (Sample 1, age range: 15-100) and during the aging process (Sample 2, age range: 50-109) in particular. Using…

Association of Borderline Personality Disorder Criteria With Suicide Attempts: Findings From the Collaborative Longitudinal Study of Personality Disorders Over 10 Years of Follow-up.

IMPORTANCE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been identified as a strong risk factor for suicidal behavior, including suicide attempts. Delineating specific features that increase risk could inform interventions. OBJECTIVE: To examine factors associated with prospectively observed suicide attempts among participants in the Collaborative Longitudinal Study of Personality Disorders (CLPS), over 10 years of follow-up, with a focus on BPD and BPD criteria. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The CLPS is a multisite, naturalistic, prospective study of adult participants with 4 personality…

Mechanism differences between typical yin and typical yang personality individuals assessed by Five-Pattern Personality Inventory (FPPI): Evidence from resting-state brain functional networks.

BACKGROUND: Most studies assessing brain-personality mechanisms have used Western personality questionnaires. However, Western personality questionnaires may not objectively reflect the personality characteristics of individuals in Eastern cultures such as China. Hence, we adopted the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and the Chinese localized scale, FPPI, to explore the brain mechanisms differences of typical yin and typical yang personalities of individuals in China. METHODS: 30 typical yin personality participants (TYI) and 34 typical yang personality participants (TYA) were enr…

The relationship between five-factor model and diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorder-fifth edition personality traits on patients with antisocial personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Despite the fact that new criteria of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) in diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders-fifth edition (DSM-5) were resulted from five-factor model (FFM), there is a small amount of studies that investigate the relations between proposed personality traits and FFM. Also, cross-cultural study in this field continuously would be needed. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relation between the FFM and DSM-5 ASPD pathological traits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional study design. The participants consiste…

Stiff-person syndrome.

Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is an autoimmune disease associated mainly with antibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) or to glycine, characterised by intermittent painful spasms, stiffness and rigidity of the proximal and truncal muscles. Neuro-ophthalmological and gastrointestinal symptoms also occur. The symptoms are caused by neuronal excitability due to impaired inhibitory (gamma amino butyric acid [GABA] and glycine) neurotransmission. SPS is part of a larger spectrum of GAD antibody-spectrum disorders, which overlaps with autoimmune epilepsy, cerebellar ataxia, myoclonus, progressi

[Stiff-Person Syndrome].

Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a rare autoimmune neurological disorder characterized by progressive axial muscle stiffness, central nervous system hyper-excitability, and painful stimulus-sensitive muscle spasms. SPS is classified into classic SPS and SPS variants, including stiff-limb syndrome (SLS) and progressive encephalomyelitis with rigidity and myoclonus (PERM), based on clinical presentation. SPS responds to immunotherapy, and several autoantigens have been identified. Most patients with SPS have high-titers of antibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), the rate-limiting enz

NEWS2 and the older person.

The National Early Warning Score (NEWS), published in 2012, made no specific adjustments for older people. The updated NEWS2 (2017) incorporated new confusion as a category for consciousness. In this article, we consider the role of NEWS2 in detection of acute clinical deterioration in older people and how the score may be used to inform care, highlighting the additional aspects, such as care escalation decisions, that may ensue. We consider the evidence of NEWS and NEWS2 in assessment of the older person in different settings, including the potential benefits and limitations for care home res

Disconnections in personal neglect.

Personal neglect is a disorder in the perception and representation of the body that causes the patients to behave as if the contralesional side of their body does not exist. This clinical condition has not been adequately investigated in the past as it has been considered a symptom of unilateral spatial neglect, which has mainly been studied with reference to extrapersonal space. Only a few studies with small samples have investigated the neuroanatomical correlates of personal neglect, and these have mainly focused on discrete cortical lesions and modular accounts, as well as being based on t

Personalized approaches to bronchiectasis.

Introduction: Interest in bronchiectasis is increasing due to its rising prevalence, associated with aging populations and the extended use of high-resolution chest tomography (HRCT), and the resulting high morbidity, mortality, and demand for resources.Areas covered: This article provides an extensive review of bronchiectasis as a complex and heterogeneous disease, as well as examining the difficulty of establishing useful clinical phenotypes. In keeping with the aims of 'precision medicine', we address the disease of bronchiectasis from three specific perspectives: severity, activity, and im

Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a neurological disorder characterized by fluctuating muscle rigidity and painful spasms that occur spontaneously or are triggered by diverse stimuli. Partial or segmental forms of the disorder, such as stiff-limb syndrome (SLS) and the more severe disease called progressive encephalomyelitis with rigidity and myoclonus (PERM), are usually considered within the spectrum of SPS. Sexuality of dissocial persons.

INTRODUCTION: The development of personality disorders as well as sexual disorders is defined by the common time spectrum as well as deficits and changes in such areas as biological, environmental and mental area. Dissocial (antisocial) personality disorder is characterised by a pervasive pattern of disregard for, or violation of, the rights of others. The indices of the discussed disorder can be found in specific patterns of social inadequacy occurring during childhood and puberty. At the same time, characteristic indices of social functioning at a young age often indicate subsequent dysfunct…

Syncope in the Older Person.

Syncope in the older person carries a high morbidity, mortality, and health economic burden. While neurally mediated disorders and orthostatic hypotension account for the majority of syncopal episodes in this age group, around a third of causes are cardiac, predominantly arrhythmic. Clinicians need to be aware of the management of potential comorbid issues such as osteoporosis and cognitive impairment and if not in a position to act on them, ensure that appropriate specialist help is sought. Further work is needed to understand the pathophysiology and hence the management of syncope in the old
