Neurologic disability: a hidden epidemic for India.

India, the world's second most populous country, is facing the emergence of a hitherto "hidden" epidemic: neurologic disability. The rapid economic, demographic, and social transformation of India in recent decades has already resulted in the double burden of unresolved epidemics of infectious diseases (e.g., malaria, tuberculosis) coupled with rising rates of chronic diseases (e.g., cardiovascular diseases). Neurologic disability is likely to join these public health concerns as a third epidemic, largely due to 3 emerging health trends: 1) an increase in traumatic brain injuries (TBI) from ro

Developmental and dyadic perspectives on commitment in adult romantic relationships.

We tested hypotheses concerning the developmental roots of becoming the "weak-link" (less committed) partner in adult romantic relationships and the associations between partners' absolute and relative levels of commitment and dyadic outcomes. We examined 78 target 20- to 21-year-olds who were involved in a romantic relationship and who had been studied since birth. As predicted, people who received lower-quality support from caregivers in toddlerhood or who were less able to resolve conflicts with a best friend in midadolescence were more likely to become the weak-link partner in a romantic r

Transgender youth: invisible and vulnerable.

This study used three focus groups to explore factors that affect the experiences of youth (ages 15 to 21) who identify as transgender. The focus groups were designed to probe transgender youths' experiences of vulnerability in the areas of health and mental health. This involved their exposure to risks, discrimination, marginalization, and their access to supportive resources. Three themes emerged from an analysis of the groups' conversations. The themes centered on gender identity and gender presentation, sexuality and sexual orientation, and vulnerability and health issues. Most youth repor

Toward a definition of generalized anxiety disorder as an anxious temperament type.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is defined as an uncontrollable disposition to worry about one's welfare and that of one's immediate kin. Associated manifestations include arousal, vigilance, tension, irritability, unrestful sleep and gastrointestinal distress. There is growing evidence for the lifelong nature of this condition among many of its sufferers. This and other evidence reviewed in the present paper provide further support for the thesis that the chronic disposition to worry should probably be classified under constitutional or trait anxiety. GAD is best considered an exaggeration

Recent developments in alcoholism:psychodynamic approaches.

A review of the substance abuse literature in the 1980s focuses on deficits in self-regulating capacities, in self-care functions, and in other vulnerabilities of the self, such as an inappropriate use of defenses and problems in intimacy. Various models which attempt to explain these behaviors are described, as well as techniques of dynamic psychotherapy for substance abuse, which emphasize the building of ego functions and the internalization of self-preservation functions. Commonalities and differences of substance abuse with other intensely driven compulsive behaviors (e.g., pathological g

[Psychosomatic diseases of adolescents].

Psychosomatic reactions and disturbancies occur frequently in adolescence. Their dramatic presentation is characteristic for the inner feeling of uniqueness, instability and loneliness of this phase of life. Grownups seem far away and unable to understand what is really going on. The pediatrician being consulted needs special interest and knowledge of the specific dynamics of adolescence and should remember his own youth. He should avoid involving the patient into unnecessary and harmful physical examinations, because they tend to aggravate and fixate the symptom. He must succeed as competent

Multiple personality disorder. A psychoanalytic perspective.

This article links multiple personality disorder (MPD) and dissociation to related theories of defense, resistance, and development in treatment. Trauma, conflict, and deficiency all play contributing roles in the genesis of MPD; the blend of each ingredient may be decisive in each patient. Internal conflict and deficiency tend to be overlooked, whereas trauma is emphasized. Other psychoanalytic concepts, such as transitional phenomena, identity, aggression, repetition, and the seeking after quiescence, are applied to MPD. In the discussion of working through, emphasis is placed on the process

Early prevention of childhood disability in developing countries.

The concept of prevention, while implicit in most early intervention efforts, has not been comprehensively articulated as a basis for conceptualizing early intervention services. The growing recognition of the importance of early identification and intervention for infants and young children, and involvement of the family, are factors which contribute to conceptualizations of services which are preventive in nature. This recognition parallels broader concerns for family support programmes which have a preventive focus and seek to enhance the development of children and families. The purpose of

Indications of depression and distress in divorce and nondivorce children reflected by the Rorschach test.

The appearance of depressive features, as reflected by responses to the Rorschach test, were explored in two groups of children from divorced and nondivorced families (referred to here as divorce and nondivorce children). The relationships between the depression scores and the children's hostility, aggression, and anxiety levels were also studied. The Rorschach Inkblot Test was individually administered to a nonclinical sample of 108 Swedish school children between 10 and 12 years old. The subjects constituted two groups, a divorce group (27 girls, 27 boys) and a nondivorce group (27 girls, 27

A multimethod approach to the assessment of physical abuse.

Numerous and heterogeneous symptoms of maladjustment have been documented among victims of physical abuse. Much of the well-controlled, theoretically guided research is rooted in methodology designed to search for group differences between abused children and a comparison group. Given the recognized methodological problems in constructing appropriate comparison groups for abused children, this study is designed to examine alternative methodological approaches. The purpose of the study is to utilize a case study to illustrate the utility of a multimethod approach to highlight intraindividual va

Relation of social and academic competence to depressive symptoms in childhood.

Relation of depressive symptoms to social and academic competence was examined in 750 4th-grade students. Self-report, peer-nomination, and teacher-rating measures of all three constructs were obtained. The multitrait-multimethod data were examined with confirmatory factor analysis and multivariate analysis of variance. Stronger correlations than have previously been reported were found between depressive symptoms and both kinds of competence. Social and academic incompetence had an additive effect on depressive symptoms. Children who were both socially and academically less competent had more

Temperament, adjustment, and alcoholism in adult female incest victims.

Female adult incest victims differing in history of alcoholism were compared to an alcoholism-only and a no incest/no alcoholism group on dimensions of temperament, psychological adjustment, and self-esteem. Incest victims with histories of alcoholism were more alienated and withdrawn, less rhythmical in their daily behavior, and evidenced lower self-esteem, more negative mood, greater social nonconformity, and more emotional discomfort than women in the other three groups. Women in the no incest/no alcohol group showed the best self-esteem and psychological adjustment and were generally more

Cross-setting consistency in early adolescent psychopathology: deviant friendships and problem behavior sequelae.

This study examines adult reports of externalizing and internalizing psychopathology at home and school in a sample of 224 high-risk adolescent boys and girls (average age 12 years). Four groups of young adolescents were defined, based on the consistency of the teacher and parent Child Behavior Checklist reports: normal, internalizing, externalizing only, and comorbid. Group comparisons revealed the comorbid and externalizing groups were more engaged in a deviant peer group and were observed in higher levels of deviancy training with their friends, compared to other young adolescent groups. Family characteristics of autistic children: a further report.

The personality features of parents of a group of 21 well-functioning autistic children have been described previously. The main characteristics of these parents were social gaucheness and a tendency towards the single-minded pursuit of special, often intellectual, interests. We now present the agreement between research interviewers and clinician in the diagnosis of these parents as schizoid, together with clinical details of those parents rated by both as having definite schizoid traits. The educational functioning of the siblings of the autistic children compared with that of siblings of a

Neurocognitive Processing of Figurative Language in Individuals With Schizotypal Personality Traits: Evidence From an Event-Related Potential Investigation.

BACKGROUND: The objective identification of potential neurophysiological markers of schizotypal personality traits represents a major step toward improving early diagnostic strategies in psychiatry. In this study, we investigated the influence of schizotypal personality traits on the neural mechanisms underlying literal and figurative language comprehension, aiming to contribute to the development of neurophysiological markers of schizophrenia spectrum pathology. METHODS: A total of 121 university students were assessed using the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) and categorized int

Associations between music teachers' Big Five personality traits and their stereotypical beliefs about students gifted for music.

Teachers' beliefs about gifted students may influence instructional practices and students' educational development. While previous research has focused primarily on beliefs about intellectually gifted students, little is known about beliefs regarding students gifted for music and their relation to teacher characteristics. The present experimental vignette-based online study investigated whether music teachers' Big Five personality traits are associated with their beliefs about students gifted for music. A sample of 392 (prospective) music teachers evaluated a fictitious student presented in a

The impact of personality traits on daily functioning: A study on a group of help-seeking young adults.

INTRODUCTION: Functional impairment is a common issue among patients with mental health disorders and first-episode psychosis who seek assistance from public mental health services designed for early intervention. These services often provide brief psychotherapeutic treatments to enhance social and professional functioning. However, the effectiveness of these brief interventions varies. Identifying risk factors for mental disorders, such as specific personality traits, could inform the development of more effective early intervention strategies. This study aims to identify significant personal
