Genetic and personality interactions shape impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

BackgroundIn Parkinson's disease (PD), predictive factors of Impulse Control Disorders (ICDs) remain insufficiently understood. Personality and polygenic risk scores (PRS) have both been independently associated with ICDs.ObjectivesOur objective was to study the interaction effects between personality dimensions and PRS on the odds of developing ICDs.MethodsThis case-control study included PD patients with and without ICDs (n = 250 patients). Personality was assessed using the Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised, and PRS were computed from genotyping data across 18 traits linked to psy

Associations between personality traits and cognitive function in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) are chronic demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system frequently associated with cognitive impairment (CI). Although both disorders share overlapping neurological manifestations, they differ substantially in underlying pathophysiology and disease course. Despite the clinical relevance of personality traits and cognition in chronic neurological disorders, the relationship between cognitive function and the five major personality domains remains insufficiently characterized in MS patients. Moreover,

Gender analysis of the frequency and course of depressive disorders and relationship with personality traits in general population: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine the prevalence and course of subthreshold depressive symptomatology (sDS) and probable major depressive episode (MDE) and to examine their association with personality traits among men and women. METHODS: A community-based sample aged 35 years or older was examined in two waves (median follow-up of 6.9 years). The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to assess sDS and MDE. The 10-item version of the Big Five Inventory was used to assess personality traits. Prevalence was assessed at baseline (n = 5,557) and incidence and persistence-recurrence rate

Associations between personality traits and suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in patients with personality disorders.

INTRODUCTION: People with personality disorders (PDs) have an elevated suicide risk. However, correlates of suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA) remain largely unknown in this population. A growing body of literature highlights the contribution of the Big Five personality traits in suicide-outcomes. Therefore, the present study investigates the association between the Big Five personality traits and SI and SA in people with PDs while applying the ideation-to-action framework. METHOD: Data were obtained from 105 treatment-seeking individuals diagnosed with PDs participating in the

Personality traits distinguishing dementia with Lewy bodies from Alzheimer disease.

OBJECTIVE: To identify personality traits that distinguish dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) from Alzheimer disease (AD). METHODS: We examined 290 participants enrolled in a longitudinal study (nondemented control = 34, DLB = 128, AD = 128) followed to autopsy. As part of the annual interview with the collateral source, the clinician asked about specific changes in personality, interests, and drives based on items from the Blessed Dementia Scale (BDS). Statistical analysis was performed using chi(2) and Fisher exact tests. Factor analysis was performed to determine underlying structure and rece

Theodore Millon (1928-2014).

Theodore Millon was born on August 18, 1928. On January 29, 2014, Ted died peacefully in his sleep of congestive heart failure. Ted was a scholar and prolific writer. He penned--literally, since he never used a keyboard--and edited more than 30 books and authored or co-authored more than 100 book chapters and research articles. Ted may be most recognizable for the family of objective inventories that bear his name. His development of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory in the 1970s revolutionized personality assessment here and abroad. Over time, many new instruments were developed that t

A typology of antisociality in methadone patients.

Multistage cluster analyses with replications were used to sort score profiles of 252 methadone maintained men on 4 continuous measures of antisociality--childhood conduct disorder and adult antisocial personality disorder symptoms, the revised Psychopathy Checklist, and the Socialization scale of the California Psychological Inventory. The analysis yielded 6 replicable and temporally stable cluster groups varying in degree and pattern of antisociality. The groups were statistically compared on sets of external criterion variables--Addiction Severity Index measures of past and recent substance

Emotional adjustment in compensated head injury patients.

Patterns of emotional adjustment based on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) were examined in a group of 124 patients who had suffered head injuries, reported postconcussional symptoms, and were receiving compensation. Cluster analytical procedures were used to identify subgroups. The sample was divided into two equivalent groups for purposes of crossvalidation. The results of the analyses in the two samples yielded similar patterns. Within each subgroup, the groups differed on the level and pattern of emotional disturbance. Approximately 65% of the sample had normal profil…

Efficacy of quetiapine for impulsivity and affective symptoms in borderline personality disorder.

Data on the efficacy of quetiapine in borderline personality disorder (BPD) are still scarce. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of quetiapine for impulsivity and a broad range of affective symptoms in BPD. In this 12-week open-label study, we included individuals with BPD who presented to psychiatric in- and outpatient services. After a gradual titration of quetiapine, a flexible dose (range, 100-800 mg) was administered. The main outcome measures consisted of the scores on patient-rated questionnaires (Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory, Affective Lability Scale,

A person-centered perspective on the combined DSM-5 AMPD/ICD-11 personality model: Utility, relationship with the categorical personality disorder model, and capacity to differentiate between levels of identity functioning.

BACKGROUND: Both the ICD-11 classification of Personality Disorders and the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (DSM-5 AMPD) conceptualize personality pathology in a dimensional way, but differ in the way they carve up their respective pathological personality domains. Recently, a combination of ICD-11 and DSM-5 AMPD descriptive pathological personality traits, the Modified Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Brief Form Plus (PID5BF + M), was developed. THE CURRENT STUDY: We investigated the utility of the additional ANANKASTIA domain (not represented in the DSM-5 AMPD) as well as o…

Theories of psychopathology: Introduction to a special section.

This special section on theories of psychopathology provides an opportunity to collect the emergent, cross-cutting scholarship that is challenging traditional approaches to understanding mental illness. Here, we appraise the state of theory in the field and emphasize the pitfalls of working in the context of overly flexible, unchallenged, and essentially unchallengeable theoretic models, such as the biopsychosocial model, which we argue has become the de facto theoretic model for our field. We further posit that theoretic shortcomings are contributing to the often-referenced pessimism regardin

The association between trait anxiety and the fear of being laughed at in college: A preliminary study with a Brazilian sample.

AIM: To evaluate how gelotophobia correlates with trait anxiety in a sample of Brazilian college students. METHODS: We evaluated the association of GELOPH < 15 > scores with both self-reported experiences of bullying victimization and trait anxiety measures assessed by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The study consisted of a sample of 65 adult volunteers (M = 21.48, SD = 2.54 years, 38 females), recruited through social media or flyer distribution, and submitted to online versions of the gelotophobia assessment instrument (GELOPH < 15 >) and the STAI. RESULTS: Most part

Affective temperaments and obesity: Is there an association with binge eating episodes and multiple weight cycling?

BACKGROUND: affective temperaments have been so far understudied in the field of obesity. Therefore, we aimed to assess affective temperaments in outpatients with obesity reporting symptoms of binge eating (BE) and multiple weight cycling (MWC) and to investigate the likelihood of an association between affective temperaments and risk of both conditions. METHODS: A total of 300 individuals with obesity seeking treatment at the Obesity Unit of an academic hospital were asked to complete self-report measures of affective temperaments, BE, depressive and anxiety symptoms, and quality of life. Altered Affective Temperaments in Women With Vaginismus.

OBJECTIVE: Vaginismus is one of the most frequently occurring genito-pelvic pain disorders in women. Sexual dysfunction commonly presents with comorbid psychiatric disorders, and many patients suffering from the former exhibit the latter. The objective of this study was to investigate the affective temperaments of women with vaginismus compared to healthy controls. METHODS: Forty-eight women with vaginismus and 42 age-matched healthy women were recruited and compared in terms of their scores on the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire and a sociodemo

[Development of the Japanese version of the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BAQ)].

The Aggression Questionnaire (Buss & Perry, 1992) has been used to investigate links between personality factors and health outcomes. We developed the Japanese version of the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BAQ) and assessed validity and reliability of the scale. Study I (N = 1,125 college students) used a 45-item rating questionnaire measuring each of four components of aggression: Anger, Hostility, Physical Aggression, and Verbal Aggression. Four aggression subscales emerged clearly from exploratory factor analysis. Study II (N = 611 college students) used a 24-item questionnaire and re
