Juvenile progressive dystonia: a new phenotype of GM2 gangliosidosis.

A 10-year-old boy developed progressive dystonia and dementia. His symptoms had begun at age 2 1/2 years, and he had been unable to walk by … ls seen in late-onset or adult cases of GM2 gangliosidosis. This patient appears to represent a new phenotype of juvenile GM2 gangliosidosis having dystonia as the dominant symptom.

The rare red cell phenotype Lan negative in Japanese.

Two patients and a healthy blood donor were found to be Lan negative and to have anti-Lan in their sera. These are the first three examples of the Lan-negative phenotype to be described in Japanese. The families of two of the propositi were studied: the parents of both were first cousins and one of the propositi had a Lan-negative sibling. No Lan-negative examples were found in 15,000 Japanese donors screened with anti-Lan.

Phenotype-genotype correlation in haemoglobin H disease in childhood.

In this study we used restriction endonuclease mapping to characterise the molecular defect responsible for haemoglobin H disease in 14 Sardinian children. The resulting genotypes were then correlated with the respective clinical and haematological phenotypes. We found that patients with the combination of non-deletion alpha(+)-thalassaemia [(alpha alpha)th] and deletion alpha(0)-thalassaemia (-Med) have a more severe phenotype than that resulting from the interaction of deletion alpha(0)-thalassaemia (-Med) and alpha(+)-thalassaemia (-alpha) determinants. Clinically, presentation was earlier …

Phenotype study of apolipoprotein E isoforms in hyperlipoproteinaemic patients.

It has been suggested that apolipoprotein E (apoE) is inherited at a single genetic locus with three common alleles designated E2, E3, and E4. The products of these three alleles are apoE2, apoE3, and apoE4. The apoE phenotypes of 74 normal subjects and 226 hyperlipoproteinaemic subjects were ascertained by gel isoelectrofocusing. Patients with type I, type IIa, type IIb, and type IV hyperlipoproteinaemia had an apoE phenotypic distribution which was similar to that of normal subjects, with 40.0 to 60.0% being homozygous for E3. In contrast, 75% of type III patients had an E2 phenotype and 25%…

The Jk(a-b-) phenotype in New Zealand Polynesians.

The Kidd locus phenotype Jk(a-b-) was detected in 0.9 percent of Polynesians living in New Zealand. Over a period of 13 years, nine examples of anti-Jk3 were detected, one of which caused a delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction. Other examples resulted in mild hemolytic disease of the newborn. The anti-Jk3 reacted as an inseparable antibody, confirmed that inheritance of the Jk(a-b-) phenotype was best explained by the presence of a silent Jk allele.

Clinical rheumatoid vasculitis associated with the B8 DR3 phenotype.

A statistically significant association of clinical rheumatoid vasculitis (excluding nodules or nail-fold infarcts only) with the HLA B8 DR3 phenotype was found when comparing 30 patients with vasculitis with 84 classic or definite rheumatoid patients without clinical vasculitis. The previously reported association on HLA DR4 with rheumatoid disease was also confirmed.

No phenotypes in Ttc22 knockout mice.

The TTC22 gene encodes a protein containing seven tetratricopeptide repeats (TPRs), which mediate protein‒protein interactions as chaperones … genes related to the host adaptive response to inflammation in the colon mucosa. In conclusion, no phenotypes were induced by Ttc22 inactivation in C57BL/6N mice.

Cardiac phenotypes in LMNA mutations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review highlights the diverse cardiac manifestations of LMNA mutations, focusing on their underlying molecular mechanisms and clinical implications. As LMNA mutations are implicated in cardiomyopathies, such as dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ARVC), and conduction system diseases, understanding these phenotypes is critical for advancing diagnosis and management strategies. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies reveal that LMNA mutations disrupt nuclear envelope stability, activating the DNA damage response (DDR) and compromising chromatin organiz…

Phenotypic diversity in NAXE mutations.

BACKGROUND/AIM: NAD(P)HX epimerase (NAXE) gene mutations have been associated with early onset progressive encephalopathy. We present three patients with NAXE gene mutations and different initial manifestations. CASES: Patient(P)1 was a 30 month-old boy whose neurological regression started after an infection and progressed, ultimately leading to death one year later. His brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings were suggesting metabolic stroke. P2, nine year-old sister of P1, had mild developmental delay since birth, seizures after age 5 years and pellagra-like skin lesions. P3 was a

Clinical characterization of endometriosis phenotypes.

PURPOSE: Endometriosis appears in various forms and symptoms. With regard to the established endometriosis classifications, it is hardly possible to draw conclusions from the endometriosis to the symptoms caused by it. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether different endometriosis phenotypes are associated with distinct pain profiles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 3329 patients underwent surgical treatment for endometriosis at the University Endometriosis Center Franconia of the Erlangen University between September 2011 and January 2024. They were grouped by phenotype [superficial (SE)…

Different Phenotypes of Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder with a heterogeneous phenotype. HS is a recurrent, fluctuating disease with various natural histories. Its phenotypes have been associated with responses to therapy; however, more studies about treatment response are needed, as is evaluation of biomarkers, before conclusions can be reached. This article provides a scoping review of HS phenotypes reported in the literature, with the hope that the results may offer insights for a more individualized approach to treatment.

Rhinitis Phenotypes Based on Multimorbidities.

Chronic allergic and nonallergic rhinitis are common phenotypes of a highly prevalent disorder of the upper airways, often associated with asthma.1 Clinical data, epidemiologic studies, and mHealth-based and genomic approaches indicate the existence of 2 distinct diseases: rhinitis alone and rhinitis + asthma, which may be allergic or less often nonallergic. Both disease phenotypes need to be further characterized, because allergic conjunctivitis, food allergy, and atopic dermatitis, often present in patients with allergic rhinitis, may be considered as independent multimorbidities. Thus, the …
