Validity of leopard skin manifestation in community diagnosis of human onchocerciasis infection.

The validity and reliability of onchocercal leopard skin (LS) when used as a screening criteria in community diagnosis of human onchocerciasis is reported. Between March and May, 1991, 1,302 persons were skin snipped and examined for LS from all households in Mballa, Isuochi in Isuikwuato L.G.A. of Abia State, Nigeria. Leopard skin showed a sensitivity rate of 30% and a specificity of 76.5% when used to identify cases of onchocerciasis. Some factors that influenced validity of leopard skin as diagnostic criterion are discussed. The use of two or more manifestations jointly as indicators of onc

The biology of the pigmentary system and its disorders.

Melanin is the major determinant of skin color in humans. Abnormalities and diseases affecting pigmentation interrupt the production of distribution of melanin. The authors discuss the many diseases of hyper- and hypopigmentation.

Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome: albinism with lipofuscin storage.

The Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome, a "tyrosinase positive' form of oculocutaneous albinism, is a triad comprising albinism, a hemorrhagic diathesis and ceroid-lipofuscin storage. A pedigree is presented showing consanguinity with a pattern of pseudodominance. Electroretinography in two isolated Hermansky-Pudlak subjects was distinctly abnormal, showing decreased rod and cone responses (as well as abnormal flicker fusion responses) in one patient, and reduced photopic and scotopic responses in another. The decreased ERG responses are discussed with reference to the known retinal abnormalities in bo

Hypomelanosis of Ito (incontinentia pigmenti achromians): a neurocutaneous syndrome.

Hypomelanosis of Ito (incontinentia pigment achromians, systematized achromic nevus) is a cutaneous abnormality consisting of bizarre, patterned, macular hypopigmentation over variable portions of the body surface. Multiple associated defects in other systems occur in a significant precentage of affected individuals. Most commonly, the central nervous system, eye, and musculoskeletal structures are involved. It is suggested that the cutaneous abnormality, which is often detectable at birth or during infancy, may forewarn pediatricians of the possible emergence of defects in other organ systems

Retinal pigment epithelium in incontinentia pigmenti.

An 18-month-old white girl with incontinentia pigmenti presented clinically with leukokoria of the right eye. B-scan ultrasound demonstrated a retrolental mass consistent with a detached retina. Histologic examination of the skin revealed changes compatible with the intermediate verrucous phase of the disease. Microscopic examination of the right eye showed retinal detachment and nodular proliferation of the retinal pigment epithelium. The nodules contained macrophages laden with melanin and lipofuscin. An unusually large amount of lipofuscin was present for a child of this age. The basic pigm

Exosomes in Cosmetic Dermatology: A Review of Benefits and Challenges.

BACKGROUND: Exosomes are small extracellular vesicles (30-150 nm in size) that play a critical role in cellular communication, transporting proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids between cells. This literature review focuses on evaluating the potential benefits and limitations of exosomes in enhancing skin health and aesthetics through indications such as skin rejuvenation, hair restoration, and pigmentation disorders. METHODS: A thorough literature search was conducted on PubMed using specific MeSH, including "exosomes," "aesthetics," "cosmetic dermatology," "skin rejuvenation," "hair growth," …

Laser Treatment Monitoring with Reflectance Confocal Microscopy.

Laser treatments have become popular in Dermatology. In parallel to technologic development enabling the availability of different laser wavelengths, non-invasive skin imaging techniques, such as reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), have been used to explore morphologic and qualitative skin characteristics. Specifically, RCM can be applied to cosmetically sensitive skin areas such as the face, without the need for skin biopsies. For these reasons, apart from its current use in skin cancer diagnosis, our systematic review reveals how RCM can be employed in the field of laser treatment monitor

Dyschromatosis Universalis Hereditaria.

Dyschromatosis universalis hereditaria (DUH) is a rare pigmentary genodermatosis usually inherited in autosomal dominant fashion characterized by multiple pinpoint to pea-sized hypo- and hyper-pigmented macules arranged in reticulate pattern that develops within the first few years of life. An 11 years old boy presented with multiple gradually progressive asymptomatic hypopigmented macules on hyperpigmented background on trunk, extremities and face since 2 years of age. Family history was absent. Punch biopsies revealed increased number of melanocytes in the epidermis with basal cell vacuolar

[Analysis of ADAR1 gene variants in two pedigrees affected with dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria].

OBJECTIVE: To detect variants of ADAR1 gene in two Chinese pedigrees affected with dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria (DSH). METHODS: Clinical data and peripheral blood samples of the pedigrees were collected. All exons of the ADAR1 gene were amplified by PCR and subjected to Sanger sequencing. Suspected pathogenic variants were validated among other members of the pedigrees and 100 unrelated healthy controls. RESULTS: For pedigree 1, Sanger sequencing has identified a heterozygous missense variant c.3002G>C (p.Asp968His) in exon 11 of the ADAR1 gene in the proband and his father. For ped

ReCell® Spray-On Skin System for Treating Skin Loss, Scarring and Depigmentation after Burn Injury: A NICE Medical Technology Guidance.

The gold standard treatment for deep burns is an autologous skin graft; in larger burns this may be meshed to increase the area covered. However, long-term aesthetic and functional outcomes of graft scars may be poor. ReCell® is a medical device that processes skin samples in the operating theatre into a cell suspension to be sprayed or dripped onto a wound. It is claimed to improve healing and scar appearance. This device was evaluated by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme. Two groups were defined: ReCell compared to conventi

[Research progress of dyskeratosis congenita].

Dyskeratosis congenita (DC) is a rare disease and a genetic heterogeneity of bone marrow failure, characterized by muco-cutaneous triad of mucosal leukoplakia, abnormal skin pigmentation, nails dystrophy and often involving multiple organs or systems. The inheritance patterns of DC include X-linked recessive, autosomal dominant and recessive patterns. However, the inheritance patterns in 30%-40% of DC patients remained unknown. Dyskeratosis congenita is difficult to diagnose because of its genetic and clinical heterogeneity. This article will review and discuss the state-of-the-art progresses

The color of skin: blue diseases of the skin, nails, and mucosa.

Diseases of the skin, hair, nails and mucosa can appear as flesh-colored lesions or may present as any of the colors of the visual spectrum. Diseases associated with blue (or shades of blue) discoloration represent a unique group of conditions that occur de novo or as a reaction to either a topical or a systemic agent to which the individual has been exposed. Blue diseases can affect the skin, the nails or the mucosal membranes of the mouth (buccal mucosa, gingiva, lips, palate or tongue) or eyes (sclera). In addition to appearing blue, they can also appear as blue-black, blue-brown, blue-gray
