Structural Analysis of the Adhesive Interface between Polyethylene and Polyamide 6 Using Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy.

The structure at the interface of multilayer polymer films is critical for determining their adhesion performance. However, the direct characterization of chemically reactive polymer-polymer interfaces remains challenging. This study examined the adhesive interface between coextruded polyethylene (PE) and polyamide 6 (PA6) films, which included a maleic anhydride-modified polyethylene (mPE) interlayer, using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. The analysis of the STXM image stacks through singular value decompositio

From plastic to pathophysiology: polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics disrupt fish blood, metabolism, and growth.

Rising global plastic use has led to widespread synthetic polymer pollution in aquatic ecosystems, threatening aquatic life. The combined toxicity of prevalent plastics like polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) under realistic conditions remains largely unexplored. This study provides the first evaluation of the impact of environmentally relevant concentrations (0.5 mg/L) of PE- and PVC-MPs, individually and in combination, on Channa punctatus over a 21-day exposure period, uniquely revealing the enhanced toxicity of combined MPs through an integrated assessment of hematological, bio

Efficacy and Safety of 1-L Polyethylene Glycol With Low Ascorbic Acid for Bowel Preparation: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Ultra-low-volume polyethylene glycol (PEG) with ascorbic acid (Asc) improves tolerability, but Asc-related gastrointestinal and metabolic adverse events remain a concern. Whether reducing the Asc dose preserves cleansing efficacy without compromising safety is unclear. We compared a modified 1-L PEG regimen with reduced Asc (1-L PEG + low Asc) with standard 1-L PEG + Asc and 2-L PEG + Asc formulations. METHODS: In this multicenter, randomized, investigator-blinded, three-arm noninferiority trial across five hospitals, low-risk adults undergoing colonoscopy were allocated

Chain collapse and dynamics of inhomogeneities in aqueous solutions of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and its block copolymers with polyethylene glycol.

Spin probe EPR spectroscopy was used to investigate the polymer chain collapse in aqueous solutions of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) and its block copolymers with polyethylene glycol (PEG). The research demonstrated that for polymers with relatively low molecular weight, the polymer end groups and presence of comonomers significantly broaden the temperature interval of chain collapse. Inhomogeneities formed during the collapse process possess local polarity close to that in chloroform. Dynamic exchange of the probe molecules between inhomogeneities and bulk solution is observed for all t

Polyethylene Glycol Mediated Inhibition of α-Lactalbumin Aggregation: Molecular Insights From a Carbohydrate-Mimicking Stealth Polymer.

Polyethylene glycols (PEG)-assisted strategies for the development of functionalized and compatible carbohydrate polymers are always an exciting topic for polymer research. However, PEGs, a carbohydrate-mimicking stealth polymer, act as a macromolecular crowding agent that has a significant impact on protein aggregation depending on their concentration and molecular weight. The study systematically investigated the impact of PEG molecules with different molecular weights and concentrations on the thermal aggregation of α-Lactalbumin (α-LA). As the concentration was increased from 10 to 200 mg/

Preparation and characterization of positively charged phenylaminopropyl-bonded core-shell microspheres for separation of polyethylene glycol and diverse compounds.

Core-shell silica microspheres were utilized as the substrate, and phenylaminopropyl groups were covalently grafted to fabricate SiO2@SiO2-PHN. Meanwhile, C18-bonded core-shell microspheres (SiO2@SiO2-C18) were also prepared to compare their separation selectivity. The characterization results revealed that the grafting density of phenylaminopropyl groups was 1.89 μmol/m2. Alkylbenzenes were selected as test analytes to evaluate the fundamental chromatographic performance of SiO2@SiO2-PHN, exhibiting a typical reversed-phase chromatographic retention mechanism, with a column efficiency of 106,

Design and Characterization of Self-Assembling Peptide (SAP)-Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) Multiblock Copolymers (MBCP) Thin Films.

Self-assembling peptides (SAPs) provide a versatile, biocompatible platform for soft biomaterials, but their application in mechanically robust, processable polymers remains limited. We report a peptide-polyethylene glycol (PEG) multiblock copolymer (MBCP) using the amphipathic β-sheet-forming SAP K(FEFK)2K as a physical cross-linker. Synthesized via copper-free strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC), the MBCP was solution-cast from water into free-standing films whose properties were governed by the peptide's ability to form stable β-sheet fibers and aggregates. Films were tough a

High-fat diet primes vulnerability to polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastic toxicity via the gut microbiota-metabolism axis.

This study investigated whether a high-fat diet (HFD) acts as a priming factor that increases intestinal susceptibility to polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastics (PET-NPs, 100 nm, 25 mg/kg/d). After a 12-week combined exposure in mice, HFD priming potentiated the deleterious effects of PET-NPs on intestinal structure and function. Compared to HFD alone, the combined exposure (HFD + PET-NPs) exacerbated intestinal barrier injury, as evidenced by reduced tight junction proteins (Claudin-1, Occludin, and ZO-1), increased permeability, and disrupted histoarchitecture. These mice also exhibited en

High stiffness auxetic cells with intrinsic heating for thermoforming as potential alternative of polypropylene or polyethylene sheet materials for orthoses.

Conventional custom orthotic devices such as scoliosis braces are typically manufactured from monolithic polyethylene or polypropylene sheets, which limit comfort and functionality. Although advanced manufacturing methods enabling functional integration in polymer components have been developed in recent years, they have not yet been adopted by orthotic manufacturing. This study investigates the feasibility of developing a potential alternative to polyethylene/polypropylene sheets under specific conditions, using 3D-printed auxetic metamaterials made from high-performance thermoplastics, enabl

Functional, genomic, and transcriptomic insights into linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) biodegradation by landfill-derived Brucella intermedia.

The global accumulation of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) waste has created an urgent need for sustainable biodegradation strategies. Here, we report the identification and characterization of two landfill-derived Brucella intermedia isolates associated with LLDPE biodegradation. Soil samples collected from the Matuail landfill in Dhaka, Bangladesh, were screened on minimal salt medium supplemented with LLDPE. Both isolates demonstrated sustained growth under carbon-limited conditions in which LLDPE was the principal carbon source. LLDPE recovered from bacterial cultures showed chemic

BACKGROUND: Agglomeration/microparticulation of anti-asthmatic/anti-inflammatory salmeterol (SX) and fluticasone (FP) in a single vehicle rendered inefficient pulmonary drug redispersion and site targeting. This study designed externally drug coated dual-microcarrier against single microcarrier (SX external coat/FP internal coat) systems and examined their pulmonary drug delivery/targeting profiles. METHODS: Spray-dried lactose-polyethylene glycol 3000 microcarriers were prepared with magnesium stearate lubricant added where applicable. Both single- and dual-microcarrier systems were subjecte

A 4-Arm polyethylene-glycol-based multivalent galactoside disrupts Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm and restores antibiotic susceptibility.

The formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) biofilm significantly enhances bacterial resistance to antimicrobial agents and escape from the host immune system, making the treatment of related infections considerably more challenging. As a potential approach for anti-biofilm strategies, the inhibition of lectins often relies on multivalent interactions to enhance binding affinity between the inhibitor and its target. In this study, targeting the P. aeruginosa lectin LecA, we constructed a polyethylene glycol-based multivalent galactoside, termed 4-Arm-PEG-Gal, by modifying the termi

Environmentally relevant polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics induce functional and oxidative alterations in sheep placental cells In vitro.

Ruminants are among the livestock most at risk of microplastics (MPs) exposure due to the ingestion of contaminated forage, particularly with polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Yet, despite this high risk, the potential effects of microplastics on reproductive function in these species remain largely unknown. Here, we studied how environmentally relevant PET-MPs impact placental functionality and cellular responses in an in vitro sheep model. First, virgin PET was mechanically processed through progressive milling and sieving to obtain two fractions of 20-50 μm or <20 μm, which were characteris

Efficacy of polyethylene glycol in the treatment of spinal cord injury and its effect on inflammatory response and oxidative stress factors.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe condition characterized by neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, which hinder neurological recovery. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has shown multiple therapeutic benefits in SCI, such as repairing axonal membranes, improving the post-injury microenvironment, preventing nerve fiber degeneration, and inhibiting spinal cord vacuolation and scar formation. Based on these properties, PEG is regarded as a potential fusogen capable of promoting functional recovery after SCI. This study aimed to further investigate the effects of PEG on SCI and elucidat
