Eradication and livelihoods: Household determinants of opium poppy cultivation in Eastern Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: Despite recent policy interventions and eradication campaigns, opium poppy cultivation remains deeply embedded in the Afghan rural economy, questioning the success of the current anti-drug strategies. The objective of this study is to investigate farm households' motives to cultivate opium poppy in Eastern Afghanistan. METHODS: The study draws on a survey of farm households conducted between November 2024 and January 2025 in the eastern region. The decision to cultivate poppy and the size of the land devoted to this crop have been analysed using binary logit, Tobit, and Heckman se

Mobility and non-household environments: Understanding dengue transmission patterns in urban contexts.

Households (HH) have been traditionally described as the main environments where people are at risk of dengue and other arbovirus infections. Mounting entomological evidence suggests a larger role for environments other than HH. Recently, an agent-based model (ABM) estimated that over half of infections occur in non-household (NH) environments such as workplaces, markets, and recreational sites. Despite the inferred importance of NH sites, we do not yet know how their urban spatial configurations, and human and vector mobility between them, affects their role in dengue transmission. To address

Social Group Differences in Influencing Factors for Chinese Urban Residents' Subjective Well-Being: From the Perspective of Social Stratification.

With the great pressure of modern social life, the problem of residents' subjective well-being has attracted scholars' attention. Against the background of institutional transformation, China has a special social stratification structure. The socio-economic resources and living needs of different social classes are different, resulting in differences in the level of subjective well-being and the influencing factors for this. Taking Guangzhou as an example, based on the data of a household survey conducted in 2016, this paper obtains the social hierarchical structure through two-step clustering

Neighbourhood wealth, not urbanicity, predicts prosociality towards strangers.

Urbanization is perhaps the most significant and rapid cause of demographic change in human societies, with more than half the world's population now living in cities. Urban lifestyles have been associated with increased risk for mental disorders, greater stress responses, and lower trust. However, it is not known whether a general tendency towards prosocial behaviour varies across the urban-rural gradient, or whether other factors such as neighbourhood wealth might be more predictive of variation in prosocial behaviour. Here, we present findings from three real-world experiments conducted in

Associations between neighbourhood characteristics, alcohol use patterns, and physical activity in midlife - the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966.

PURPOSE: Despite extensive research, links between individuals' environments and alcohol use remain inconsistent. This has renewed interest in neighbourhood determinants of alcohol use. We examined whether neighbourhood characteristics are related to alcohol use in urban and rural areas, and whether physical activity modifies associations. METHODS: Cross-sectional study utilised 46-year follow-up data from the population-based Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (n = 6,655). Alcohol use was classified into abstinence, moderate (> 0 ≤ 30/20 g/day men/women), and heavy use (> 30/20 g/day). Neigh

Remarriage after divorce: recent changes and demographic variations.

Using data from US Bureau of the Census publications from the decennial censuses and the Bureau's Current Population Reports, the authors analyze remarriage in the US. Among adults who had ended their 1st marriage in divorce, about 3/4 of the elderly men and 2/3 of the elderly women in both 1970 and 1980 were found to be remarried. However, the general decline in remarriage at the younger ages during the 1970s was accentuated among those under 35 years old. Although the proportion remarried among women with graduate school training was the smallest, that proportion declined less during the 197

Longitudinal Associations Between Neighborhood Environments and Functional Disabilities Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults in China.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the longitudinal associations between neighborhood environments and functional disabilities over time among older adults in China. Urban-rural disparities in these associations were examined in this study. METHODS: Data from 4 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011-2018) were analyzed, including a sample of 5,379 older adults aged 60 and over. Multilevel linear probability modeling was fitted to estimate the effects of neighborhood environments on functional disabilities, encompassing both incidence and rate of change over

Have a place to live? - study on the influence of the living environment on the subjective well-being of older adults.

BACKGROUND: Against the backdrop of accelerating global aging, China's population aged 60 and above has exceeded 18% of the total population, making the quality of life of older adults a focal point of societal concern. As a core factor influencing the quality of home-based elderly care, the living environment encompasses natural, social, material, and spiritual dimensions, directly impacting older adults' physical and mental health as well as subjective well-being. Existing research has acknowledged the influence of living environments on older adults' subjective well-being but lacks in-depth

How self-governance willingness and participation efficacy shape residents' satisfaction with urban public services: Evidence from neighborhood renewal in Hangzhou, China.

Using an original survey of 2,202 households across 36 renewed neighborhoods in Hangzhou, China, this study examines how resident agency-operationalized as self-governance willingness and participation efficacy-shapes satisfaction with urban public services within a legally structured participatory governance context. To address endogeneity, we estimate two-stage least squares models with district and street fixed effects, instrumenting self-governance willingness with distance to the provincial government offices and participation efficacy with policy awareness and community involvement; inst

Epidemiological situation of tuberculosis in Poland: part II. What are the causes of the different epidemiological situation in various regions of Poland?

INTRODUCTION: The different epidemiological situation of tuberculosis in various regions of Poland (higher and lower notification rates) was described previously by our group. The patients diagnosed with tuberculosis in the higher notification rate areas were younger and there were more cases of primary tuberculosis (tuberculous pleurisy and tuberculosis of chest lymph nodes) than in the patients diagnosed in the lower notification areas. The aim of the present study was to assess the possible causes of the different epidemiological situation of tuberculosis in various regions of Poland. MATE
