Pharmacological Treatment of Disinhibition in Acquired Brain Injury.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury is a major universal public health concern and results in chronic neurobehavioral sequelae including disinhibition. Objectives of this study were to review the literature on pharmacological treatment of disinhibition post-acquired brain injury (ABI), describe a snapshot of pharmacotherapy used in ABI at a tertiary neuropsychiatric unit in British Columbia, Canada, and share expert opinion. METHODS/PROCEDURES: A retrospective chart review of 11 patients from October to December 2021 was conducted based on exclusion criteria: age greater than 18 years,

Incorporating callous-unemotional behaviors into school-based research.

This study investigated the utility of including teacher-reported callous-unemotional (CU) behaviors in the assessment of disruptive behaviors in school-based research. Participants included 138 first- and second-grade children (68% male; 76% eligible for free or reduced-price lunch; 61% Black, 9% Latinx, 23% White, and 7% multiracial) who completed assessments during the baseline assessment of an intervention study. Results indicated that teachers could distinguish CU from traditional indicators of disruptive behavior, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) behaviors and co

Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the Open-Source Challenging Behavior Scale (OS-CBS).

At present, there are no brief, freely-available, informant-report measures that evaluate key challenging behaviors relevant to youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other developmental disabilities (DD). This paper describes the development, refinement, and initial psychometric evaluation of a new 18-item measure, the Open-Source Challenging Behavior Scale (OS-CBS). In a large sample (n = 2004, 169 with ASD, ages 2-17), results of psychometric analyses indicated a clear factor structure (property destruction, aggression, elopement, conduct problems, and self-injury and a general factor

Within-person Relations between Domains of Socio-emotional Development during Childhood and Adolescence.

Adolescence is a critical period in the development of mental health with nearly 1 in 5 adolescents suffering from mental health problems and more than 40 percent of these experiencing at least one co-occurring mental health disorder. This study investigates whether there are differences in the relations between key dimensions of child and adolescent mental health in adolescence compared to childhood. Mental health and related socio-emotional traits were measured longitudinally at ages 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, and 16 in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (N = 11279) using the Stren

Child Temperament as a Predictor of Parents' Potential for Emotional Abuse.

Children who are constantly criticized and humiliated by their parents and whose needs for affection and attention are not sufficiently addressed are defined as people with personality traits, low self-confidence, and antisocial behaviors. These personality traits have a significant influence on the shaping of the child's temperament. Therefore, emotional abuse negatively affects both the personality and success of the child. In line with this, child temperament was analyzed as a predictor of the emotional abuse potential of parents who have children between the ages of 4 and 6. The experiment

Parental post-traumatic stress, overprotective parenting, and emotional and behavioural problems for children with critical congenital heart disease.

OBJECTIVE: To examine relationships amongst parental post-traumatic stress symptoms, parental post-traumatic growth, overprotective parenting, and child emotional/behavioural problems in families of children with critical CHD. METHOD: Sixty parents (15 fathers) of children aged 1-6 completed online questionnaires assessing parental post-traumatic stress symptoms and post-traumatic growth, overprotective parenting, and child emotional/behavioural problems. Bivariate correlations and mediational analyses were conducted to evaluate overprotective parenting as a mediator of the association betwee

Clinical and electrophysiological predictors of behavioral disorders in patients with benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes.

PURPOSE: Long-term seizure and developmental outcomes of benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) are thought to be good. Studies have shown that behavioral disorders may accompany BECTS. We aimed to investigate the frequency of behavioral disorders in patients with BECTS and evaluate their relationship to epilepsy features. METHODS: Data for 41 patients with BECTS followed up at our clinic between December 2019 and June 2020 were analyzed. Behavioral disorders and intelligence were evaluated by the Turgay Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th Edition -

Participation in organized sport and disruptive behavior in childhood: A prospective, population-based study.

Child disruptive behavior refers to ongoing patterns of disorganized, uncooperative, and defiant behavior. Sport involvement promotes positive child development. However, few longitudinal studies have tested the association between organized sport participation and the behavioral components of disruptive behavior. First, we aim to examine the link between inattentive, hyperactive, aggressive, and oppositional behavior at age 4 years and trajectories of organized sport participation from ages 6 to 10 years. Then, we compare children, according to trajectory membership, on outcome differences on

Understanding the psycho-social context for a new early intervention for resistance to change that aims to strike a beneficial balance between structure and flexibility.

BACKGROUND: Emotional and behavioural problems linked to changes to expectations - resistance to change - are linked to disability in neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Prader-Willi (PWS) and fragile X syndromes (FXS). Structuring routines is best practice for minimising current resistance to change. But complete structure is impractical and flexibility in early life may actually reduce later resistance by supporting cognitive development. We aimed to examine the psycho-social context of families with children at risk of developing resistance to change so a

Prenatal substance exposure and maternal hostility from pregnancy to toddlerhood: Associations with temperament profiles at 16 months of age.

We investigated whether infant temperament was predicted by level of and change in maternal hostility, a putative transdiagnostic vulnerability for psychopathology, substance use, and insensitive parenting. A sample of women (N = 247) who were primarily young, low-income, and had varying levels of substance use prenatally (69 nonsmokers, 81 tobacco-only smokers, and 97 tobacco and marijuana smokers) reported their hostility in the third trimester of pregnancy and at 2, 9, and 16 months postpartum, and their toddler's temperament and behavior problems at 16 months. Maternal hostility decreased

A method for evaluating parameters of reinforcement during parent-child interactions.

We conducted functional analyses and identified reinforcers for problem behavior for three individuals with developmental disabilities. Based on results of the functional analysis, we evaluated the rate, probability, delay, and duration of reinforcement for problem and appropriate behavior during descriptive parent-child observations. Results showed that parameters of reinforcement, including rate, probability, delay, and duration may interact, and that evaluations of a single reinforcement parameter may be insufficient in describing response allocation. Hence, this study represents a movement…

Familial influence on offspring gambling: a cognitive mechanism for transmission of gambling behavior in families.

BACKGROUND: The problem-gambling literature has identified a range of individual, cognitive, behavioral and emotional factors as playing important roles in the development, maintenance and treatment of problem gambling. However, familial factors have often been neglected. The current study aims to investigate the possible influence of parental factors on offspring gambling behavior. METHOD: A total of 189 families (546 individuals) completed several questionnaires including the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) and the Gambling Related Cognition Scale (GRCS). The relationships were examined u

Emotion Regulation Treatment for Irritability and Disruptive Behavior: A Preliminary Investigation.

Children with oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD) represent a heterogeneous group. Within this group, a subtype of ODD has been identified for children with primarily angry/irritable mood symptoms who are at risk for developing mood and anxiety disorders. Despite the prevalence of anger and mood difficulties in children with ODD, evidence-based treatments for disruptive behavior disorders have primarily emphasized providing caregivers more effective parenting strategies to address oppositional and defiant behaviors, rather than directly targeting children's difficulties with emotions. To addre

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common behavioral disorder in children. It is characterized by motor hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention inappropriate for the age. Approximately 5-10 % of school age children are diagnosed to have ADHD. The affected children show significant impairment in social behavior and academic performance. The DSM-5 criteria are useful in diagnosing three subtypes of ADHD based on presence of symptoms described in 3 domains viz ., inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Co-morbidities like specific learning disability, anxiety disorder, op

Exploring relationships between problem gambling, scratch card gambling, and individual differences in thinking style.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Scratch cards are a popular form of lottery gambling available in many jurisdictions. However, there is a paucity of research that examines associations between individual differences in thinking style, participation in scratch card gambling, and problem gambling severity. METHODS: In three studies, we sought to examine the relationships among these variables in large, online samples of participants. Participants completed the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT), the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI), the Actively Open-Minded Thinking Scale, and self-reported their frequ

Latency and persistence of renewal in an intensive outpatient clinic.

Treatment durability can be compromised when challenging behavior recurs following context changes (i.e., renewal), yet the temporal features of lapses have not been well described in large clinical samples. We examined latency to onset and persistence of renewal to inform clinical monitoring and planning following context changes. Using a retrospective consecutive case series of 98 patients receiving intensive outpatient treatment for challenging behavior, we analyzed 749 context changes involving person, setting, and task variables. Renewal emerged quickly (M = 1-2 sessions), with half begin

Indirect But Lasting: Linking Indirect Aggression Use Over Childhood to Future Adjustment While Considering Conduct Problems.

Frequent and recurrent indirect aggressive (IA) behaviors (e.g., spreading false rumors, ignoring) are associated with later detrimental consequences. This high IA use appears to be more frequent among children with conduct problems, making it difficult to determine whether the negative outcomes of IA are related to other conduct problems or whether IA makes a distinct contribution. Therefore, the present study aims to determine whether a high trajectory of IA use from around 8 years of age to around 13 years of age is associated with negative outcomes at around 17 years of age controlling for

Exploring causal relationships between child maltreatment and child internalising and externalising behavioural problems: A bidirectional mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Prior observational studies have shown associations between child maltreatment and behavioural problems in children. However, the causal relationship and directionality between these variables stay unclear, necessitating rigorous methodologies to determine whether caregivers perpetrate maltreatment in response to child misbehaviour or if children develop behavioural problems because of maltreatment. METHOD: This study employed a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis to elucidate the causal relationships between child maltreatment and behavioural problems.
