Seventy-five men presenting with persistent urethral discharge after penicillin therapy were investigated for sexually transmitted pathogens during July - September 1987. The major aetiological agent isolated was Neisseria gonorrhoeae (58 patients (77.3%]. Penicillinase-producing N. gonorrhoeae (PPNG) accounted for 58.6% of 58 isolates. Chlamydia trachomatis was detected in 10.7% of patients and Trichomonas vaginalis in 14.7% of patients. Six cases of gonococcal arthritis are described. Three presented during the initial "bacteremic stage" with polyarthralgia, fever, skin lesions and sterile synovial fluid. Two presented during the "septic joint stage" with positive synovial culture, and one presented during the "stage of residual deformity". The work deals with the results of SPV in combination with prolonged drug blockade of the celiac plexus in 78 patients with duodenal ulcers. The motor activity of the antral part of the stomach intensified and its blood supply increased after blockade of the celiac plexus. The course of the immediate postoperative period improved after SPV and the number of patients with hypokinesia of the stomach reduced.

The ability of superoxide dismutase to prevent reperfusion injury after long-term cold storage of donor hearts was evaluated in canine hearts. Whole blood reperfusion was performed using a 'support animal'. Twelve dog hearts were arrested by a single dose of Bretschneider cardioplegic solution and stored cold (0.5 degrees C) for 24 h. Thereafter they were reperfused for 60 min without (n = 6) or with (n = 6) superoxide dismutase treatment. Myocardial tissue biopsies were taken for determination of high-energy phosphates before explantation, after the preservation period and during reperfusion.

Serological tests for syphilis (with rapid plasma reagin) were performed in 2 767 women attending the antenatal clinic of King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban, for their first, booking visit. The test was repeated at the 36th week of pregnancy. A total of 152 women (5,5%) were assumed to have syphilis. In addition, 4 (11,8%) of 34 patients who were seronegative at less than 32 weeks of pregnancy had a positive serological test result at 36 weeks.

A retrospective study of 526 adult patients admitted to the Sheba Medical Center for treatment of erysipelas during the period 1972-1982 showed a steady increase in the number of cases admitted as well as a striking change in its classical pattern of distribution, with 86% of the lesions occurring in the lower extremities opposed to 5.9% in the face. The effectiveness of a variety of the most popular methods used for treatment Bell's paralysis is analyzed on a great number (1168 patients) of cases. It has been found that the results of the treatment are predetermined primarily by the gravity of the facial nerve affection. Under conditions of the emergency medical service 217 prolonged blockades were fulfilled in 138 patients with different injuries of extremities. The anesthesizing mixture was composed of 5% of novocaine and a large moplecule protein preparation (aminokrovin, aminopeptide, 8% gelatinol). The prolonged intraosseous blockade was found to be a highly effective procedure in the complex treatment of traumatic shock. No infectious complications were noted.
