Charcot spinal arthropathy (CSA) is a rare progressive disorder of vertebral joint degeneration that occurs in the setting of any condition characterized by decreased afferent innervation with loss of deep pain and proprioceptive sensation in the vertebral column. While surgical circumferential arthrodesis remains the most effective treatment modality, it is associated with multiple complications, including hardware construct failure. This manuscript represents an up-to-date narrative review of the treatment of CSA, its associated complications, and complication prevention.

Epidural spinal myelolipoma was diagnosed in an 11.5-year-old castrated male Husky-cross that was evaluated at the veterinary teaching hospital due to progressive thoracolumbar spinal hyperaesthesia and mild proprioceptive pelvic limb ataxia. A focal, ill-defined mildly inhomogenous extradural mass lesion was detected by MRI. The dog was euthanized. At necropsy an extradurally located reddish mass of about 2.5 cm in diameter was present in the vertebral canal. The mass was identified histopathologically as an epidural myelolipoma.

A 44 year old man complained of a left flank pain. The epidural block was performed. After two hours he suddenly experienced severe back pain, lower limb numbness and weakness of the legs. The physical examination revealed the flaccid paraplegia and the disturbance of pain and touch sensation. But his proprioceptive sensation was preserved. The paraplegia gradually disappeared and he had no neurological deficit. Judging from the unique sensory disturbance, the anterior spinal artery syndrome was suspected.

As an alternative to complete dentures, overdentures are well established as a sound therapeutic modality for patients with terminal dentition. By utilizing natural tooth roots and their periodontal structures to aid in support, overdentures maintain proprioceptive mediation and a mechanism for masticatory force vectors that favor bone retention over bond resorption. The degree of stability enhancement and denture retention from retained roots varies with the design and environment of the prosthesis. A 19-year-old woman is described who, following an acute episode of eclampsia during pregnancy, displayed a complex neuropsychological syndrome. Along with a mild pattern of conduction aphasia, she showed a severe apraxia, total agraphia, marked constructional disturbances and was unable to reach targets outside and on her body and to perform accurate motor tasks under visual, tactile and proprioceptive control. These symptoms are discussed as the results of a disconnexion syndrome and related to the C.T. scan findings.

UNLABELLED: Evolving subacute myelopathies have many possible etiologies. This is a report of a patient who presented with progressive paresthesias, proprioceptive loss, and gait disturbance with acute myelitis seen on magnetic resonance imaging initially concerning for transverse myelitis. However, she also had vitamin B12 deficiency, and her clinical course ultimately suggested a diagnosis more compatible with subacute combined degeneration. The clinical features, laboratory, and imaging findings and prognosis of the 2 disorders are compared.

The objective of this review is to reinstate the diversity of visual perception and visuomotor symptoms following lesions to the posterior parietal cortex (dorsal visual stream). This diversity was overshadowed for a long time and shows the contribution of the dorsal visual stream not only to action but also to perception. More precisely, we propose that the visuomotor deficit in optic ataxia stems from two distinct components: visual proprioceptive deficit (hand effect) and visual attentional deficit (field effect) also affecting the perception in peripheral vision.

A 9-year-old spayed female Bengal Red cat was evaluated for high-rise syndrome. The cat had paraplegia of the hind limbs, intact reflexes and pain perception, and hyperesthesia in the caudal thoracic area. Mentation, cranial nerve function, forelimb proprioceptive responses, and spinal reflexes were normal. There were no abnormalities on radiographs or computed tomography scan, but magnetic resonance imaging revealed a hyperintense intraparenchymal spinal cord lesion on T2-weighted and T2 fat saturation images.

A case of peripheral arterial tumor embolization in a cat is described. The cat presented with signs of aortic thromboembolism, including decreased peripheral pulse quality, pallor, and coolness of the distal limbs, as well as proprioceptive deficits.
