Psychosis and dementia: risk factor, prodrome, or cause?

BACKGROUND: Progression of dementia is often associated with the emergence of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), though there is recent eviden … demiology, phenomenology, and clinical course and treatment considerations. RESULTS: Patients with psychotic disorders at baseline such as schizophrenia may be more at risk for developing dementia over time, although this is not completely clear. Psychotic symptoms are likely more common in PrD than previously understood based on factor analysis studies, although th …

Associations between psychotic symptoms and substance use in young offenders.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Substance use and psychotic symptoms/disorders are associated. There has been little examination of this issue in young offenders, despite elevated substance use in this group. DESIGN AND METHODS: Semistructured interviews were conducted by trained researchers with 514 young offenders. Psychotic symptoms were assessed using a previously validated screening measure, with scores ≥3 indicative of possible psychotic disorder. Associations between this indicator and patterns of offending, common symptoms of mental disorders and health risk behaviours, including substance use

Clinical and Sociodemographic Characteristics of Young People With Early Psychosis: Comparing Cannabis Users and Non-Users in a Specialized Early Intervention Setting.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of comorbid cannabis use at first onset of psychotic symptoms, high transition rates from cannabis-induced psychosis to schizophreniform psychoses and bipolar disorder, and evidence of cannabis use as a risk factor in developing primary psychosis, only a few studies have addressed the difficulties in differential diagnosis focusing on the early stages of the disease. AIMS: The present study is the first to date to examine clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of individuals with early psychosis, comparing cannabis-induced psychotic disorder (CIP

Paranoid Ideation and Violence: Meta-analysis of Individual Subject Data of 7 Population Surveys.

There is controversy whether associations between psychosis and violence are due to coexisting substance misuse and factors increasing risk in nonpsychotic persons. Recent studies in clinical samples have implicated independent effects of paranoid delusions. Research findings suggest that individual psychotic-like-experiences on the psychosis continuum in the general population are associated with violence; it remains unclear whether this association is due to psychiatric comorbidity. We pooled data from 7 UK general population surveys (n = 23 444) and conducted a meta-analysis of individual s

The relatively recent development of the psychosocial rehabilitation has its origins mainly in the progress of modern psychopharmacology, th … majority of patients suffering from major personality disorders and addiction (40.6%), followed by psychotic disorders (37.2%), persistent mood disorders (12.3%), neurotic disorders (6.6%) and psycho-organic disorders (3.3%). In home based rehabilitation, the ratio of patients with psychotic disorders is more important (53.1%). This difference would indicate that pe …

Emotion dysregulation mediates the relationship between nightmares and psychotic experiences: results from a student population.

Sleep disruption is commonly associated with psychotic experiences. While sparse, the literature to date highlights nightmares and related distress as prominent risk factors for psychosis in students. We aimed to further explore the relationship between specific nightmare symptoms and psychotic experiences in university students while examining the mediating role of emotion dysregulation. A sample (N = 1273) of student respondents from UK universities completed measures of psychotic experiences, nightmare disorder symptomology and emotion dysregulation. Psychotic experiences were significantly

Network analysis of psychotic manifestations among cocaine users.

Psychotic experiences can be described along a continuum ranging from no psychotic experience at all, to clinical psychotic disorder. Any individual in the general population may encounter psychotic experiences under certain circumstances. Transient Cocaine Induced Psychotic Symptoms (TCIPS) are a well described model of such circumstances. Therefore, our aim was to use a network analysis to get a better knowledge on the architecture of previously described risk factors and how they contributed to two different measures of psychosis (psychosis proneness and transient cocaine induced psychotic

Lifetime prevalence of psychotic experience, and its associated factors among Senegalese women: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Psychotic experiences, which include a range of symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations, is an indication of elevated risk for mental disorders and poor quality of life. These experiences are often underreported and undertreated in low- and middle-income countries, including Senegal. This study aimed to investigate the lifetime prevalence of psychotic experience, its associated factors and adverse outcomes among Senegalese women. METHODS: This study analyzed the 2023 demographic and health survey data of 16,521 Senegalese women. Descriptive analysis, cross-tabulations, chi-s

Cannabidiol for at risk for psychosis youth: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: No biological treatment has been firmly established for the at-risk stage of psychotic disorder. In this study we aim to test if subthreshold psychotic symptoms can be effectively treated with cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound of the plant Cannabis sativa. The question has taken on increased importance in the wake of evidence questioning both the need and efficacy of specific pharmacological interventions in the ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis group. METHODS: Three-arm randomized controlled trial of 405 patients (135 per arm) aged 12-25 years who meet UHR for psyc

Lower folate levels in methamphetamine-induced psychosis: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Folate deficiency is shown to be associated with schizophrenia. Folate profile in patients with psychosis due to stimulant use has not been investigated. We aim to determine whether there is an association between serum folate level and the presence of psychosis in patients with methamphetamine (METH) use disorder. METHODS: Forty patients diagnosed with METH-use disorder were included in this cross-sectional study. Serum folate levels were measured using enzyme immunoassay technique and compared between psychotic and non-psychotic subgroups (N = 25 and 15, respectively). We design

Feasibility of mindfulness-based therapy in patients recovering from a first psychotic episode: a pilot study.

AIM: Recently, a mindfulness therapy for people with psychotic disorders was developed. However, clinicians and researchers are cautious given case reports in which extensive meditation provoked psychotic symptoms in people with a psychotic disorder. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility, adverse effects and possible favourable effects of mindfulness-based therapy (MBT) in people recently recovering from a first episode of psychosis. METHOD: A nonrandomized, non-controlled prospective follow-up study. Patients were offered an MBT that consisted of eight 1-hour sessions with…

Mild hearing impairment and psychotic experiences in a normal aging population.

BACKGROUND: Hearing impairment (HI) in the elderly may be a risk factor for psychosis, but associations between HI and psychotic disorder or psychotic experiences have been reported more consistently in younger than in older populations. The aims of this study were to replicate the positive association between hearing impairment and psychotic experiences and to clarify any differences between groups of young and old individuals in a non-clinical, normal aging general population sample. METHODS: HI, assessed at baseline and at 3-year follow-up, and psychotic experiences, assessed at 3-year fol

[Transsexualism or delusions of sex change? Avoiding misdiagnosis].

The aim of this paper was to present basic data about gender identity disorders and psychotic transsexual desires. From time to time in scientific literature there are descriptions of a diagnosis of psychotic disorders in persons previously diagnosed and treated as transsexuals, in whom the transsexual thinking disappears after using antipsychotic agents. Coexistence of transsexualism and schizophrenia causes a lot of doubt--it is observed in scientists opinions but also in the diagnostic criteria of DSM-IV and ICD-10. Moreover, delusions of sex change are probably more frequent than it is tho…

[Interactional therapy program for mothers with postpartum mental disorders. First results of a pilot project].

BACKGROUND: The period around delivery frequently causes psychiatric diseases that may disturb maternal competence and influence bonding behaviour with the child. Until now only a few possibilities have existed for inpatient treatment and therapy for these problems. The therapy program developed in Wiesloch, Germany, is especially well suited to such patients. METHODS: Fifty-three mothers with postpartum disorders (33 depressive, 20 psychotic) were examined before and after therapy. Psychopathologic severity, psychosocial level of functioning, and parameters of the mother-child interaction we

Cannabis and psychopathology : update 2004.

The study of cannabis use and psychopathology remains an interesting area from both academic and pragmatic perspectives. This article provides an update on the progress made in this area over the past decade or so. Psychopathology and psychiatric syndromes associated with cannabis use that have received research attention in recent years include cannabis withdrawal, cannabis and psychotic disorders (especially schizophrenia), depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairment. Status of a specific cannabis withdrawal syndrome and a specific 'cannabis psychosis' remains controversial. Current eviden…

Musical hallucinations: prevalence in psychotic and nonpsychotic outpatients.

BACKGROUND: Musical hallucinations have been considered a rare manifestation of psychotic states or brain and hearing abnormalities. However, an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) assessment tool refers to musical hallucinations and our preliminary study showed that about one third of OCD patients experienced musical hallucinations. AIMS: To elucidate the lifetime prevalence of musical hallucinations among psychotic and nonpsychotic psychiatric outpatients. METHODS: Lifetime experience of musical hallucinations was examined with a specially designed structured interview in 190 consecutive o

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on persons with psychiatric disorders.

From the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic, concerns have been raised about its effect on mental health and on patients with psychiatric illnesses. A few reports suggest that patients with COVID-19 have increased symptoms of anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, increased substance use, and insomnia. There is an increased trend seen in flare-up of psychotic symptoms and new emergence of psychotic symptoms in previously healthy adults. There is extensive research available on the impact of COVID-19 on physical health, but there is a paucity of studies on the effects of COV
