Similarities and differences in homelessness in Amsterdam and New York City.

Differences and similarities in homelessness in Amsterdam and New York City were examined, particularly in regard to persons most at risk for homelessness--those with mental illness and with substance abuse problems. The Netherlands is a welfare state where rents are controlled by the national government and more than half of the housing is public housing. Virtually all homeless people in Amsterdam are unemployed and receive some sort of social security benefit. Direct comparisons of the results of American and Dutch studies on homelessness are impossible, mainly because the estimates are unce

Disabled-by-design: effects of inaccessible urban public spaces on users of mobility assistive devices - a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Despite the increase of users of Mobility Assistive Devices (MobAD), there has been a lack of accessibility in urban environments in many parts of the world. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a literature search in three databases (i.e., Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed) and initially discovered 3980 publications. We analysed 48 peer-reviewed journal articles published in English f

Knowledge, attitude and practices regarding vitamin D among adults in Ghana: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency is a major public health concern, affecting approximately half of the world's population, partly due to limited public knowledge about vitamin D sources. However, there is lack of data on awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding vitamin D in high-risk countries like Ghana. We investigated vitamin D awareness, knowledge and its associated factors in the Ghanaian population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 515 adults from Jaman South Municipal between January and June 2024. Questionnaires were used to obtain data on demographics, cli

Self-induction of abortion among women accessing second-trimester abortion services in the public sector, Western Cape Province, South Africa: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Despite South Africa's liberal abortion law permitting abortion on request in the first trimester and under restricted conditions for second-trimester pregnancies, the practice of unsafe self-induced abortion persists. However, the prevalence of this practice, the methods used and the reasons behind it are relatively under-researched. As part of a larger study seeking to improve abortion services in the Western Cape Province, we explored reports of prior attempts to self-induce abortion among women undergoing legal second-trimester abortion. OBJECTIVES: To describe the prevalence

Best practice assessment of disease modelling for infectious disease outbreaks.

During emerging disease outbreaks, public health, emergency management officials and decision-makers increasingly rely on epidemiological models to forecast outbreak progression and determine the best response to health crisis needs. Outbreak response strategies derived from such modelling may include pharmaceutical distribution, immunisation campaigns, social distancing, prophylactic pharmaceuticals, medical care, bed surge, security and other requirements. Infectious disease modelling estimates are unavoidably subject to multiple interpretations, and full understanding of a model's limitatio

Veritas amid Post-truth: Catholic Ethics and the Moral Conditions of Philippine Public Health.

Post-truth presents a challenge to public health not only through misinformation, but also through the erosion of truth as a norm of public reasoning, communication, and institutional accountability. In the Philippine context, this problem intersects with religious culture, where Catholic beliefs, practices, institutions, and digital communities can shape how health claims are interpreted and whom communities regard as trustworthy. This philosophical article employs conceptual and normative analysis to examine the relationship among post-truth, public-health trust, Philippine Catholic religiou

This article presents a framework for socially-integrated transdisciplinary HIV prevention that may improve current prevention efforts. It first describes one socially-integrated transdisciplinary intervention project, the Transmission Reduction Intervention Project. We focus on how social aspects of the intervention integrate its component parts across disciplines and processes at different lev

Knowledge, attitudes and public health response towards plague in Petauke, Zambia.

In 2001, two plague outbreaks were reported in Zambia, one of which occurred in Petauke, Eastern Province, resulting in high morbidity and mortality. Of the community respondents, 43.4% did not know the aetiology of plague. Although rats and fleas were frequently mentioned, many respondents did not know how these were related to plague. Local belief that the plague outbreak was the result of witchcraft was prevalent. Use of rodenticides was not preferred as these were reports of they being used for poisoning people. The public health response was initially slow by both the community and also t

This article describes the significant public health impact of helping patients quit using tobacco through the use of an effective clinic-based intervention. The most effective strategies are to develop organization commitment, ask every patient about tobacco use at every visit and document it, advise all tobacco users to quit, assess readiness to quit, provide at least brief behavioral counseling, provide follow-up soon after quit date, conduct at least basic evaluations of each comp
