Eosinophil-derived transforming growth factors (TGF-alpha and TGF-beta 1) in human periradicular lesions.

Inflammatory mediators of periradicular lesions are poorly understood. Transforming growth factors-alpha and -beta 1 (TGF-alpha and TGF-beta 1) have been linked with the cellular processes for both soft and hard tissue wound healing. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the cellular sources of TGF-alpha and TGF-beta 1 mRNA and protein in periapical lesions by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. Nine periapical granulomas and nine periapical cysts were examined. TGF-alpha mRNA and protein were not detectable in the granulomas examined. However, eosinophils surrounding the per

Reliability of Ultrasonography in differentially diagnosing periapical lesions of endodontic origin in comparison with Intra-oral periapical radiography and Cone-beam computed tomography: An in vivo study.

BACKGROUND: Periapical granuloma, radicular cyst, and periapical abscess represent periapical changes of frequent occurrence. Addressing this diagnostic dilemma is a matter of great concern, as it aids in governing the treatment planning and predicting its outcome. AIM: To evaluate the comparative accuracy of ultrasonography (USG), intraoral periapical (IOPA) radiography, and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in differentially diagnosing periapical lesions of endodontic origin. METHODS: Thirty-five patients having periapical lesions associated with anterior teeth requiring endodontic ther…

Diagnostically challenging epithelial odontogenic tumors: a selective review of 7 jawbone lesions.

Considerable variation in the clinicopathologic presentation of epithelial odontogenic tumors can sometimes be confusing and increase the chance of misdiagnosis. Seven diagnostically challenging jawbone lesions are described. There were 2 cases of mistaken identity in our ameloblastoma file. One unicystic type, initially diagnosed and treated as a lateral periodontal cyst, showed destructive recurrence 6 years postoperatively. The other globulomaxillary lesion was managed under the erroneous diagnosis of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor and recurred 4 times over an 11-year period. This tumor was

[Expression of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB ligand and osteoprotegerin in chronic apical periodontitis].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of key mediators that regulate bone resorption, receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappaB ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) in human periapical granuloma (PG) and radicular cyst (RC) characterized by periapical bone destruction. METHODS: Immunohistochemical technique was performed using monoclonal antibody to detect RANKL and OPG expression in PG (n= 20 ) and RC (n= 20 ). As control group, healthy periodontal ligament tissues (n = 6 ) were obtained from teeth with orthodontic indication of extraction. RESULTS: The RANKL protein expression was…

Dental and jawbone abnormalities linked to amelogenesis imperfecta: A retrospective and analytic study comparing panoramic radiographs.

BACKGROUND: Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) is a disorder of tooth development characterized by abnormal enamel formation. In order to detect other dental and jawbone abnormalities that could be associated with AI, a retrospective and analytic study was conducted comparing panoramic radiographs of AI and non-AI patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Digital panoramic radiographs of 60 AI and 60 non-AI patients were examined. Abnormalities in dental number, size, shape, eruption, and in the shape of the dental arches were checked and blindly recorded by two experimented observers. Descriptive statistics

Articular arthrodesis with the facet wedge technique for the treatment of unstable lumbar degenerative disease and associated conditions: A retrospective study of 96 patients.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar articular fusion with the facet wedge (FW) technique is gaining increasing interest among surgeons for the treatment of vertebral instability due to its limited invasiveness and ease of use. Studies on cadavers have reported biomechanical properties similar to pedicle screws. Yet, the evidence supporting their use is still limited and moreover focused only on spinal degenerative disease. METHODS: 96 cases of lumbar articular fusion with the FW techniques performed at 3 different centers between 2014 and 2022 were retrospectively analyzed based on the specific surgical indic

The assessment of anesthetic efficacy of ropivacaine in oral surgery.

This paper describes the application of ropivacaine, local, amid, long-acting anesthetic in oral surgery. For infiltrative anesthesia, 0.75% of Naropin (ropivacaine) was used in eight patients undergoing various operations (maxillary sinus with oro-antral communication, extraction of upper and lower impacted wisdom teeth, cystectomy, apicoectomy and tooth extraction). The achieved anesthesia in all patients enabled analgesia in the course of the operation, and the expected intraoperative and postoperative bleeding, whereas postoperative analgesia lasted long enough (up to 380 minutes) to preve

On the causes of persistent apical periodontitis: a review.

Apical periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of periradicular tissues caused by aetiological agents of endodontic origin. Persistent apical periodontitis occurs when root canal treatment of apical periodontitis has not adequately eliminated intraradicular infection. Problems that lead to persistent apical periodontitis include: inadequate aseptic control, poor access cavity design, missed canals, inadequate instrumentation, debridement and leaking temporary or permanent restorations. Even when the most stringent procedures are followed, apical periodontitis may still persist as asym

Periradicular curettage.

Periradicular curettage is a part of the treatment procedure of periradicular surgery. Its main purpose is to remove pathological periradicular tissues for visibility and accessibility to facilitate the treatment of the apical root canal system, or sometimes for the removal of harmful foreign materials present in the periradicular area. Inflammatory periradicular lesions (granuloma and cysts) are the responses of the periradicular tissues to irritants from the root canal and not from the periradicular area unless medicaments and/or filling materials have been forced through the apical foramina

Six-year histology of an avulsed molar reimplanted in a hydroxyapatite augmented socket: a case report.

This case report deals with the histologic examination of an avulsed tooth that was reimplanted in a socket where a distal root defect was augmented with hydroxyapatite. The 6-year results showed a "repair" type of connective tissue attachment. There were areas of ankylosis present on the distal root above an area of prior cystic debridement. The hydroxyapatite particles present demonstrated biocompatibility and encapsulation by new bone growth. There was a longer junctional epithelium present on the distal root than on its mesial counterpart. Histology of the distal root demonstrated fibrous
