[A study of refractive state in premature infants without retinopathy of prematurity during their early life].

OBJECTIVE: To understand the development of the refractive status in premature infants during their early life. METHODS: It was a cross-sectional study. Two hundred fifty-three premature infants without retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) were screened for ROP at 4-6 weeks after born. Refraction with cycloplegic retinoscopy was determined. The refractions of 38 infants were compared with those of mature infants at 40-44 weeks' correct gestational age (CGA). RESULTS: The spherical equivalent (SE) increased progressively (become more hypermetropic) along with increasing gestational age (GA), birt

[Design and optical principles of multifocal lenses].

Multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOLs) of different designs have been used for more than 20 years in modern cataract surgery. The first IOLs were either refractive 2-3-zone designs or of diffractive concept. All MIOL types, regardless of manufacturer, show reduced contrast sensitivity and increased glare for years. Nevertheless, even first-generation MIOL patients had very good functional results when patient selection, IOL calculation, and surgical techniques were appropriate. Today's gold standard is foldable, aspherical diffractive, or refractive MIOLS. Advancements in technology allow the p

[Refraction after cataract surgery with posterior chamber lenses].

In an attempt to determine the accuracy of ultrasound biometry, the spherical equivalent of the refraction obtained after ECCE and implantation of a posterior chamber IOL in 1663 patients was compared to the desired refraction determined prior to surgery. Follow up time was 21 months on the average. In only 7.4% of the eyes was the exact predetermined value obtained. In 44.3% it differed toward plus and in 46.6% toward minus. The predetermined value +/- 1 dpt was obtained in 63.8% and +/- 2 dpt in 88.3% of the cases. In 11.7% of the eyes, the desired value was missed by more than +/- 2 dpt.

Polaroid photorefractive screening of infants.

We modified a Polaroid SE camera for use as a photoretinoscope. A total of 187 infants between 2 and 18 months of age were photographed using this device. About half of these infants (97) participated in a double blind study in which the results of photorefraction were compared with those of standard cycloplegic retinoscopy. Eighty-three infants were photographed without cycloplegia. Thirty-four infants were photographed while cyclopleged. Photographs were evaluated for significant refractive errors and other ocular abnormalities. The effectiveness of the camera system to screen for significan

Contrast (modulation) sensitivity functions measured in patients with high refractive error with emphasis on aphakia: I. Theoretical considerations.

Recently, alterations in contrast (modulation) sensitivity functions of patients with high refractive errors have been noted. For example, this seems to be a common finding in aphakia. In some measure the observed alterations are due to the effect of the corrective lens and the optics of the eyes. These optical effects (in addition to blur) must be factored out in order to determine whether residual effects on the visual system remain. The argument is applicable to photographs of sine wave fringes as well as devices designed to produce interference patterns directly on the retina. A simple mea

Correction Method for Optical Scaling of Fundoscopy Images: Development, Validation, and First Implementation.

PURPOSE: Although fundus photography is extensively used in ophthalmology, refraction prevents accurate distance measurement on fundus images, as the resulting scaling differs between subjects due to varying ocular anatomy. We propose a PARaxial Optical fundus Scaling (PAROS) method to correct for this variation using commonly available clinical data. METHODS: The complete optics of the eye and fundus camera were modeled using ray transfer matrix formalism to obtain fundus image magnification. The subject's ocular geometry was personalized using biometry, spherical equivalent of refraction (R

The effects of lateral head tilt on ocular astigmatic axis.

BACKGROUND: Compensatory ocular counter-torsion (COCT) is supposed to maintain the eyes aligned with the visual environment following head tilt. Because of some recent controversies the functional capacity of this phenomenon was defined according to the extent of induced astigmatic axis error following head tilt. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Objective autorefractometry was performed on 70 eyes with a regular astigmatism of ≥2D at vertical, right head tilt and left head tilt positions of 5°, 10°, 15°, 20° and 25°. Astigmatic axis error was calculated according to the difference between the defined a

Comparison of biometric and refractive changes in intermittent exotropia with and without overminus lens therapy.

BACKGROUND: Overminus lens is an effective non-surgical treatment of intermittent exotropia (IXT). Whether this treatment causes development of myopia is recently debated. This study evaluated ocular biometric changes in IXT children treated with and without overminus lens. METHODS: Children with IXT were randomly assigned to control and overminus groups. Cycloplegic refraction, axial length and other parameters (keratometry, anterior chamber depth and lens thickness) were evaluated for up to 30 months and compared between the groups. Axial length to corneal curvature (AL/CR) ratio was examin

When trifocal IOLs disappoint: diagnostic and management pathway.

Trifocal presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs) are widely used in cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange to expand functional vision across distance, intermediate, and near ranges and to reduce spectacle dependence. Despite generally favorable visual outcomes, some patients experience postoperative dissatisfaction related to dysphotopsia, reduced visual quality, or unmet functional expectations. Evidence suggests that, at 1 year, trifocal IOLs show no clear differences versus bifocal IOLs in uncorrected distance or near visual acuity, while uncorrected intermediate acuity may
