We have explored the structure and actions of terminal nerve (TN) fibers in the teleostean retina, the most accessible of TN projections. Using immunocytochemistry we have shown that the goldfish TN contains neuropeptides related to the molluscan cardioexcitatory peptide (FMRFamide) as well as luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH). Report on an inadvertent injection of gas beneath the retina in a pseudophakic eye. The gas was injected through the pupil to tamponade a retinal break. Instead, however, it found its way under the retina, increasing the extent of the detachment. The venom of the Joro spider, reported to block glutamate action selectively at some glutaminergic synapses, was applied focally to rod horizontal and on-bipolar cells in dark-adapted retinal slices. The venom hyperpolarized horizontal cells in the dark and blocked their responses to light. The clinical picture and the results of follow-up examinations in 21 patients with an astrocytic hamartoma of the retina and/or disk are described. Fifty-one tumors were found; 7 of them (in 5 patients) initially appeared as homogeneous, whitish tumors, but later assumed a mulberry appearance. Follow-up in these patients was between 9 and 19 years. Depigmented lesions of the skin ("White Spots") were frequently seen at an early age and were especially helpful when a retinoblastoma had to be excluded in the differential diagnosis.

Twenty-five cases of retinal detachment were treated pre-operatively by the so-called active immobilization method described by Rosengren and Algvère. This procedure can be employed for all types of detachment, and gives significant reapplication in 80 p. cent of cases, simplifying subsequent surgery. Complications are rarely observed and can be easily prevented.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a candidate as a neurotransmitter in the vertebrate retina. The GABA analogue muscimol has been used to probe the properties of GABA receptors in other parts of the vertebrate central nervous system (CNS). We thus used 3H-muscimol to investigate potential GABA receptors in the retinas of goldfish and chick by means of biochemical assay techniques and light microscopic autoradiography. Forty-six patients with in most cases severe vascular degenerative retinochoroidal circulatory disturbances or with glaucomatous visual field defects were treated with rökan dragées (160 mg/day for four weeks, then 120 mg/day). The following were checked at monthly intervals to determine the degree of success of the treatment: visual acuity, visual field, funduscopy, pulse rate and blood pressure, sometimes including intraocular pressure, fluorescence angiography and ODG. The results of the treatment are reported and discussed with regard to the largely bad prognosis of these serious disorders
