PURPOSE: Elevated intraocular pressure is known to reduce retinal blood flow, although the effect of intraocular pressure on retinal vascular pressures is unknown. Direct measurements of intravascular pressures were taken in the cat retina at various intraocular pressures.
METHODS: Micropipettes of 2- to 3-microns tip diameter were used in conjunction with a servonull pressure-measuring system to determine retinal intravascular pressures in supine anesthetized cats. Pressures in large (80 to 120 microns diameter) vessels near the optic disc were measured over a wide range of intraocular press

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a common vascular disease that leads to vision loss due to macular edema (ME). This study investigated the r … treally, and retinal thickness was measured and compared using OCT. ATX expression was increased in retinal vessels in the RVO model. Intravitreal administration of ATX induced retinal edema and serous retinal detachment (SRD). ATX significantly disrupted the barrier integrity of HRMECs and promoted the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), whi …

Seven retinal breaks occuring after occlusion of a major retinal arterial or venous branch were found in the eyes of six patients. Five holes were in the midretina, in a nonperfused avascular area corresponding to the sector affected by the vascular accident. One was a macular hole, and one a horseshoe tear outside the area involved in the vascular occlusion caused by traction of vitreous on a tuft of neovascular tissue. Five of the holes may have been caused by a kind of sequestration of the retina secondary to vascular insufficiency.

A decreased ratio of the width of retinal arteries to veins [arteriolar-to-venular diameter ratio (AVR)], is well established as predictive of cerebral atrophy, stroke and other cardiovascular events in adults. Tortuous and dilated arteries and veins, as well as decreased AVR are also markers for plus disease in retinopathy of prematurity. This work presents an automated method to estimate the AVR in retinal color images by detecting the location of the optic disc, determining an appropriate region of interest (ROI), classifying vessels as arteries or veins, estimating vessel widths, and calcu

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) has become increasingly established as a diagnostic procedure in clinical practice in recent years. In the field of medical retina in particular, it serves as a useful aid to the morphological assessment of vascular diseases such as neovascular age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Technically speaking, it is a further development of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and therefore offers the advantage of being non-invasive. Even though other imaging modalities still need to be used for certain clinical matters, OCTA offers a

Optic tissue toxicity remains a major limitation of radiation therapy for ocular, brain, skull base, and head and neck tumors. Among the most frequent complications, radiation retinopathy (RR) occurs in 6% of patients treated for extraocular tumors and in more than 40% of those with ocular tumors. After an initial asymptomatic stage characterized by vascular remodeling and chronic retinal ischemia, RR may progress to irreversible vision loss and significantly impaired quality of life. Advances in non-invasive, high-resolution imaging have improved our understanding of the molecular and cellula

BACKGROUND: Prepapillary vascular loops are a type of congenital vascular anomaly seen on or around the optic disk. Patients with this condition are usually asymptomatic and are detected incidentally on routine fundus examinations. Differential diagnosis for this condition includes neovascularization of the disk and collaterals on the disk. Prepapillary capillary loops are not associated with any systemic condition. They are usually unilateral in presentation, but can rarely be bilateral.
PURPOSE: To discuss the new proposed classification of prepapillary capillary loops.
SYNOPSIS: : Prepapi

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of inherited retinal disorders characterized by progressive rod and cone photoreceptor degeneration. Changes in retinal vasculature have long been associated with RP. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a novel imaging technology that enables noninvasive visualization of the retinal and choroidal microvasculature. OCTA enables quantification of microvascular changes in the retinal capillary plexus and choriocapillaris, in addition to qualitative feature description. Therefore, OCTA has the potential to become an important tool for better unde

In the retina EC dysfunction and angiogenesis are driven by an altered microenvironment e.g., diabetes, leading to hypoxia and inflammation in the retinal layers, resulting in excessive vascular leakage and growth. The gold standard for measuring blood-retinal barrier permeability in response to disease and or therapy has been the gold standard Evans blue (EB) assay. However, this technique has limitations in vivo, including nonspecific tissue binding and toxicity. Here we describe a novel imaging methodology combining sodium fluorescein fundus angiography (FFA) with mathematical quantificatio

BACKGROUND: To evaluate choroidal vascular changes, including choriocapillaris (CC) and middle/large choroidal vessels, in retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients using wide-angle optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and to determine whether changes in the choroidal vascularity have a relationship with visual function and retinal structural changes.
METHODS: 34 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of RP and 48 controls were recruited. All patients underwent detailed ophthalmologic and imaging examinations, including two types of OCTA (Optovue, 3 × 3 mm, 6 × 6 mm; VG-200, 12 × 12 mm). CC

Deferoxamine mesylate (DFO) is the most commonly used iron-chelating agent to treat transfusion-related hemosiderosis. Despite the clear advantages for the use of DFO, numerous DFO-related systemic toxicities have been reported in the literature, as well as sight-threatening ocular toxicity involving the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). The damage to the RPE can lead to visual field defects, color-vision defects, abnormal electrophysiological tests, and permanent visual deterioration. The purpose of this review is to provide an updated summary of the ocular findings, including both functional

Evidence is now accumulating on both clinical and experimental grounds that the retina is an a priori source of inflammatory activity. Reactive inflammation in the retina may produce many of the clinical signs previously ascribed to uveal inflammation. Autoimmune mechanisms are probably responsible for the majority of cases of retinal vasculitis. Autoimmune retinal vasculitis occurs without other classical signs of inflammatory response in any other parts of the body. When associated systemic manifestations occur they may reflect different underlying immunopathogenic abnormalities. Thus in dis

An 8-year-old white female presented with retinal vascular changes of fibrovascular proliferation and avascularity of the peripheral retina that suggested a diagnosis of incontinentia pigmenti. These findings prompted a systemic evaluation, and the features of this disease were confirmed, including a history of recurring vesicles on the lower extremities of her sister in infancy. Associated systemic findings in the patient included alopecia, apigmented skin lesions, conical teeth, and a confirmatory biopsy. This case illustrates that a clinical recognition of eye findings can be of assistance

Proliferative neovascular retinopathies may be caused by the release of a hypothetical vasoproliferative factor, but mechanical factors seem to self-perpetuate the disease as well. Contraction of proliferative tissue causes vitreous detachment and traction on the retina. Congestion of vascular fronds by traction further stimulates vascularization. Traction on vessels results in hemorrhages. Surgical removal of all intravitreal scaffolds by vitrectomy seems to eliminate the development of this vicious cycle. Results of vitreous surgery seem to indicate that the hypothesis of scaffold removal is
